Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville don't agree on Alexander Isak in Liverpool predictions

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have different opinions on what a potential move for Newcastle United's Alexander Isak could mean for Liverpool Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool that securing Alexander Isak's signature wouldn't guarantee them the Premier League title. But his Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville reckons it would make the Reds overwhelming favourites. ‌ The Reds secured the championship by a massive 10-point gap last season and have since splashed nearly £300m on new signings. Liverpool have also had an offer worth up to £120million for Isak rejected by Newcastle United. ‌ Isak is training away from the Newcastle squad after missing the club's pre-season tour of Asia and has reportedly refused to play for Eddie Howe's side. With Isak keen to join Liverpool, there's still a possibility the forward could get his wish and add to Arne Slot's already formidable frontline. ‌ When asked about Liverpool's prospects of signing Isak, Sky Sports pundit Carragher replied: "Yeah, I think so, but I don't get this narrative of Liverpool are going to run away with it." Carragher pointed to the Reds' Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace as evidence that new arrivals Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike will require time to blend. There could still be further additions, with the club also in talks over a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. "If you look at history, it could tell you that it's not just about having the best players, it's about having the best team, and sort of making that balance right, and at the weekend it didn't quite look right," Carragher said. ‌ The Liverpool legend continued: "I think we will have a title race, and I think there's a lot of talk. I think the great thing about football is what we actually saw on Sunday with Liverpool. It didn't look right. "It tells me it's not just about spending lots of money and buying the best players, you've still got to manage that team and make it work and have a nice balance to it." ‌ However, former Manchester United defender Neville believes that landing Isak could establish Liverpool as the prime candidates to retain their crown. "Liverpool won it really comfortably last year and have had a great transfer window," he said during the launch of Sky Sports' Premier League coverage. "If they get Isak, which it looks like he's agitating for a move, then it will make them massive favourites. But Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, I think will push them closer than last year." ‌ Manchester City made early moves in the transfer market after a disappointing campaign by their own high standards. Pep Guardiola has brought goalkeeper James Trafford back to the club, snapped up Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, signed Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan and added Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki. Arsenal are keen to go one step further than their three consecutive second-place finishes, with Viktor Gyokeres arriving as the club's new number nine. Martin Zubimendi should improve the Gunners' midfield, while Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera provide Mikel Arteta with better squad depth. Chelsea are regarded as outsiders in the title race following their Europa Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs under Enzo Maresca. The club have once again been busy in the transfer window, most notably adding Liam Delap and Joao Pedro up front, signing Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Gittens and welcoming highly-rated prospect Estevao.

Premier League to test Ref Cams on first weekend with view to permanent rollout

The Premier League is planning to test Ref Cams in selected matches during their opening round of fixtures this weekend with a view to making the new technology a permanent feature of live TV games for the rest of the season. The Guardian has learned that the clubs have given their approval for the trial with the Premier League's broadcast partners, Sky Sports and TNT Sports, also supporting the innovation. Fifa trialled Ref Cams at this summer's Club World Cup in the United States, with the chair of their refereeing committee Pierluigi Collina saying the experiment had gone 'beyond expectations'. Following a post-tournament review the International Football Association Board (Ifab), which determines the laws of the game, gave their approval for the Ref Cam trial to be extended to domestic competitions last month. The Premier League subsequently trialled the new equipment in the final two matches of their pre-season Summer Series tournament in the US, between Bournemouth and West Ham, and Manchester United and Everton in Atlanta. The Premier League and broadcasters have embraced the new technology as they believe it enriches the viewer's TV experience by giving them a unique view of the action. While the Ref Cams do not offer live action footage, they can be used to provide near-instant replays of match incidents from a different angle. Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the refereeing body, is also supportive on the grounds that Ref Cams will give an extra insight into the difficulty of refereeing top-flight matches, as well as highlighting the fact that officials sometimes have a limited view of crucial incidents despite their best efforts. Ref Cam technology involves referees wearing cameras on their right ear, connected to a microphone and transmitter, which sends video to the broadcasters. Two wires – one for the camera and the other for a microphone – are put on the back of the referee's shirt and a transmitter is placed in a shorts pocket. PGMOL has been looking to innovate in this area for some time, with Jarred Gillett wearing a head-mounted Ref Cam during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in a trial last year, although the footage was only broadcast in highlights programmes at a later date. The Premier League also trialled chest-mounted GoPro cameras in its US Summer Series two years ago without broadcasting the action during matches. At the Club World Cup, the Ref Cam footage was shown on big screens at the stadiums, as well as being broadcast by global rights holder Dazn during the games, which the Premier League want to replicate. Having been impressed by the Club World Cup trial, Fifa is expected to approve the use of Ref Cams for next summer's World Cup. The Premier League declined to comment.

Chelsea files: Superagent Barat is secret transfer weapon, Blues to be Sky Sports pioneers and Broja deal revealed

Cole Palmer was not impressed with a team-mate last week BLUE DAWN Chelsea files: Superagent Barat is secret transfer weapon, Blues to be Sky Sports pioneers and Broja deal revealed Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AGENT Ali Barat has emerged as a key figure in Chelsea's transfer window. Not least because the Blues future of one of his star clients, Nicolas Jackson, will be a major issue in the coming days and weeks. Especially when you consider Jackson's omission from the matchday squad further fuelled talk that the Senegal striker could be on his way. As well as managing that situation, Barat is also working for Chelsea target Xavi Simons to seal him a move to the Premier League. And that has meant him getting involved with the Blues' attempts to sell players like Christopher Nkunku, Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George to the German side. READ MORE ON CHELSEA NACHO LIBRE Alejandro Garnacho 'sends Man Utd blunt message' over Chelsea transfer saga Barat was also instrumental in the deal that took Noni Madueke to Arsenal for a fee of £52m which will be very handy when it comes to balancing the books to comply with Uefa rules. But there is plenty more business to be done at Stamford Bridge and you can expect Barat to be at the heart of it. And whatever happens with Jackson, he will retain a strong powerbase at Chelsea. Barat was named Best Agent at the 2023 Golden Boy awards, after overseeing the deal worth up to £115m that took his client Moises Caicedo from Brighton to the Blues. That was also the year Chelsea agreed to sign Ecuador wonderkid Kendry Paez. The Epic client moved to the club this summer after turning 18 and was sent out on loan to sister club Strasbourg for the season. Barat, who also worked on Dean Huijsen's move from Bournemouth to Real Madrid this summer, is being given the "super-agent" tag once applied to former Stamford Bridge gatekeepers like Jorge Mendes and Pini Zahavi. ACCESS ALL AREAS PREMIER LEAGUE fans watching from home will be hearing from players and managers DURING the game this season - and Chelsea could be the pioneers. An update to the Premier League's 'Section K' rules for the new broadcast deal this season means clubs will have to offer a higher level of access to cameras on at least two occasions this season. 8 Sky Sports will have better access to players and managers from this season Credit: Getty There are three new elements. Either the manager speaking at half-time, so long as their team are winning, cameras being allowed into the dressing room, or a player who has been substituted off being interviewed while the game is going on. Clubs have to notify the Premier League and broadcasters ahead of their TV fixtures whether they intend to offer up this access. Chelsea host Crystal Palace live on Sky Sports this Sunday and are considering being quick out of the blocks with the new feature. SUMMER SALES WHILE everyone has been quick to criticise Chelsea's spending, they have become very adept at selling. A number of senior figures at rival clubs have been privately impressed by the Blues when it comes to moving players on, this summer especially. 8 Armando Broja left Chelsea to join Burnley this season Credit: Instagram @burnleyofficial They are also being rather smart when it comes to structuring deals. Burnley have signed Lesley Ugochukwu and Armando Broja for a combined £35million. And the Blues have been generous when it comes to the terms of the transfers, with lower payments up front. Further instalments are due in January and then spread across their respective contracts. However, if Burnley were relegated and felt the need to sell either player, they would have to pay Chelsea the full balance of the fee, which would give the Blues a cashflow boost. NOT FOR KEEPS SPECULATION continues about a Chelsea bid for Gianluigi Donnarunna but the Blues are not in the market for a new goalkeeper in the remainder of the transfer window. And recent claims that Filip Jorgensen is seeking to leave after only a year at the club are also thought to be unfounded. 8 Chelsea are not expected to move for Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer Credit: Getty Jorgensen, 23, played every game bar one of the Blues' victorious Conference League campaign last season. But when the Dane was given his chance in the Premier League in February, errors in the defeats by Brighton and Aston Villa led to Robert Sanchez regaining the No1 position. A number of clubs are believed to have enquired about Jorgensen's availability for sale or loan in the current transfer window. But he has no interest in quitting Stamford Bridge and is confident of being given the opportunity to challenge Sanchez for the No 1 spot again. VAO ABOUT THAT WHEN Blues boss Enzo Maresca talked about 'punishing' teenage sensation Estevao, some fans' imagination went into overdrive. The Brazilian winger is already a crowd favourite at the Bridge after scoring and generally looking brilliant on his debut in the Leverkusen friendly. 8 Enzo Maresca joked that Estevao was 'punished' after joining Chelsea for scoring against the Blues in the Club World Cup Credit: Getty But Maresca joked that Estevao's new team-mates made it clear when he first arrived at Cobham that they had not forgotten him netting for former club Palmeiras against Chelsea in the Club World Cup quarter final. Maresca told the Men in Blazers YouTube channel: 'We punished him when he arrived, because he scored against us." Some supporters speculated that Estevao might have been forced to endure the tunnel run of slaps, which is said to be a common form of light-hearted training ground discipline. But the word is that Maresca was being absolutely tongue in cheek about any kind of retribution being taken on the wonderkid. CAPTAIN'S ORDERS TALKING of pretend outrage, Cole Palmer has let good mate Tosin Adarabioyo know that he was not impressed with the defender being trusted with the Chelsea captaincy before he got to wear it himself. Tosin posted snaps to Instagram of himself wearing the armband in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, after taking it from Moises Caicedo when the midfielder was substituted. 8 Cole Palmer is keen to get his hands on the Chelsea captain's armband Credit: Getty Palmer was quick to comment on the post, saying: "Wait how on earth have you got the armband before me???" The pair's friendship has been well documented, as has the leadership of Tosin in the dressing room and on the pitch since his arrival for free from neighbours Fulham. He is one of a fair few players who have worn the armband for Chelsea in this squad, including of course captain Reece James, vice-captain Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah. Palmer is clearly keen on being one of the next to have the honour.
