
Hims & Hers falls as weight loss treatment shift hurts revenues
Hims said it saw strong demand for its weight-loss offerings in the second quarter, but noted that a pivot toward personalized compounded GLP-1 treatments lowered the revenue it earned per order versus its previous compounded offering.
The new personalized offering is more costly to run, the company said. Compounded medications are less expensive than branded drugs like Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO), opens new tab Wegovy, which Hims had offered under a now-terminated partnership with the Danish drugmaker.
Hims reported $190 million in GLP-1-related revenue during the quarter, down around $40 million from the preceding quarter.
Overall platform subscriptions rose 31% year-over-year.
Leerink Partners analysts flagged the GLP-1 revenue dip as expected. However, the market reaction was negative after the results, as investor expectations were elevated due to a surge in Hims' shares this year.
The company's stock has more than doubled so far this year, while Denmark-listed shares of Novo have fallen over 50%.
The brokerage called the softness in Hims' core business, which includes treatments for conditions related to sexual health, a negative surprise.
Hims & Hers reported a decline in its subscribers for its sexual health business, which sells generic drugs for erectile dysfunction, in the second quarter.
Canaccord Genuity echoed a near-term caution for the company, but remained constructive on the longer-term growth potential, citing strong year-over-year gains in newer specialties such as dermatology, weight management, and daily-use sexual health solutions.
Despite the stock's sharp post-earnings pullback, the brokerage called the move a potential buying opportunity.
Hims shares are priced at 95.85 times the company's estimated earnings for the next 12 months, a common benchmark for valuing stocks.

NFL players gripping their contraband smelling salts like winning lottery tickets can relax: the league won't ban the inhalants. The players' union sent a memo to members clarifying the NFL ban, which strictly applies to teams providing smelling salts and any other ammonia inhalant during pregame activities, games and halftime on the sideline or in the locker rooms. Now NFL players will be out of pocket for the inhalants, which can cost around $6.50 per dose. 'The NFL Players Association is aware of the memo issued by the league Tuesday regarding the use of smelling salts and ammonia capsules,' read the memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press. 'We were not notified of this club policy change before the memo was sent out. To clarify, this policy does not prohibit player use of these substances, but rather it restricts clubs from providing or supplying them in any form. The NFL has confirmed this to us.' The league's recent edict on inhalants cited a Food and Drug Administration warning that such treatments could potentially mask symptoms of head trauma. But just try telling that to NFL players and even coaches, who use smelling salts for the rush of energy and mental stimulation they provide. While crashing an NFL Network broadcast at 49ers training camp in Santa Clara on Tuesday, San Francisco tight end George Kittle claimed the NFL was banning players from using stimulating inhalants. 'I honestly came here to air a grievance,' Kittle said. 'Our team got a memo today that [said] smelling salts and ammonia packets were made illegal in the NFL. 'I've been distraught all day,' he continued. ;I considered retirement. We have to figure out a middle ground. Somebody help me out.' Kittle was then asked how often he uses the stimulant, replying: 'I'm an every drive guy. I miss them already.' Smelling salts are also popular across multiple sports and with power lifters. Users are advised to take a 'whiff' of the product for enhanced alertness and energy. The stimulant has previously been endorsed by Joe Rogan , who spoke at length about smelling salts during a podcast episode three years ago. Rogan initially tried the product himself - along with comedian Theo Von - and struggled to deal with the intensity that they provided. However, Rogan encouraged his producer to try the stimulant. He said: 'You should take a hit! It's not that bad. It's not painful'. Rogan later posted a clip onto his Instagram with the caption: 'Our first experience with smelling salts. The great and powerful @theovon and I took a whiff of @jujimufu's good stuff. 'Shoutout to my friend @worlds_strongest_gay for the introduction to these fine olfactory stimulators. Holy s*** was that intense'. In a report by ESPN last year, Dr. Joseph Estwanik of the American College of Sports Medicine also warned of the dangers that the stimulant can cause. He explained: 'The claim is that smelling salts arouse your consciousness and focus, but how many of us in our daily lives think it's appropriate during a tough day at work to open a bottle of ammonia and start sniffing the fumes?' 'Ammonia's intended use is for cleaning. Giving a highly trained elite athlete ammonia to help them perform at their peak is like throwing a drowning man a cup of coffee.'

United Airlines grounds flights at US airports over technology glitch
WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab said it had grounded its flights at U.S. airports on Wednesday due to a technology issue, and warned of additional flight delays in the evening. "Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports," the airline said. United suffered an outage of its weight calculation system, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. "The issue affecting United Airlines flights has been resolved and mainline flights are departing once again," flight tracking website FlightRadar24 said on social media at 9:19 p.m. ET (0119 GMT on Thursday). The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said earlier it issued a ground stop for United flights at several U.S. airports. The ground stops were issued at major United hub airports including Newark, Denver, Houston, Chicago, according to the regulator's website. As of 9:25 p.m. ET, flight tracking data from FlightAware showed that 870, or 28%, of United flights had been delayed on Wednesday. United's outage came a few weeks after Alaska Airlines grounded all of its flights for about three hours due to an IT outage for the second time in just over a year. In April 2024, Alaska grounded its entire fleet due to an issue with the system that calculates the weight and balance of its planes.

The dark meme seems to resurface at the end of the summer each year, and although some regard it as a joke about dreading school, experts warn of the negative connotations of the trend. Dr. Chelsea Hetherington, a developmental psychologist, wrote in Family Education that jokes about suicide can trivialize the issue and impact students who are struggling with mental health. 'The 'back to school necklace' trend is just one of many ways that teens might joke about suicide and self-harm without recognizing the consequences,' Heatherington argues. The disturbing meme often pictures a noose with the caption, 'Guys look it's a back to school necklace' or 'Back to school necklace. Only $4.99.' Experts warn that parents should be on alert for this phrase and teach their children that joking about harming themselves has serious implications. Although many kids and teens may use the meme as a form of dark humor, youth suicide is a serious problem. Suicide is responsible for more deaths than any major medical illness for those ages 10 to 24 years old, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Data cited by the AAP found that roughly 7-8 percent of adolescents attempt suicide every year, with around 17 percent reporting suicidal thoughts. Around 157,000 individuals in this age group receive emergency medical care a year for self-harm. The United States Surgeon General declared a mental health crisis for children and teens in 2021, citing stressors like gun violence and the impact of social media on young people's lives. Heatherington suggested that parents should be aware of the signs indicating mental health struggles in their kids and keep an open dialogue on the subject.
