Public parks in Thanjavur lack maintenance, residents irked
THANJAVUR: The lack of proper maintenance in several public parks within Thanjavur City Municipal Corporation limits has left residents disgruntled, with many complaining that the once-thriving green spaces have turned into locked, overgrown plots.
According to the data from the Thanjavur district administration, the city corporation is responsible for maintaining 144 parks developed under various schemes, including the Town and Country Planning scheme and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). However, a visit to multiple locations reveals that many of these parks are in a state of disrepair.
In Shanthi Nagar, two parks have reportedly remained locked for several months, leading to thick vegetation growth and disuse of play equipment. 'There are two parks in our area, and both have been locked for a long time. Children have no place to play,' said K Rajadurai, a local resident.

Complete all road repair work, clear debris by May 31 or face action: NMC Commissioner
1 2 Nagpur: With the monsoon looming, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has warned contractors that they must complete all road repair works by May 31 or face strict action, including hefty fines. He also made it clear that no department or agency will be permitted to carry out road digging works during the monsoon season. "If any department undertakes such activities, police complaints will be filed against them," said Chaudhari during a review meeting held at NMC headquarters in Civil Lines on Tuesday. He also warned that action would be taken against any NMC engineers found negligent in their duties. During the meeting, discussions were held regarding the completion of roadworks across different parts of the city, where digging was carried out for sewer lines, drinking water pipelines, and other purposes. Superintendent engineer Shweta Banerjee provided details on the progress of sewer line and water pipeline works, particularly under AMRUT Phase 2. She reported 78.94% of the project work was completed. Out of the total 40.96 km of feeder line and water pipeline laying work, 32.33 km was completed, while 8.63 km remains unfinished. Chaudhari also warned that no debris or garbage heaps should be left on the roads. The responsibility for clearing this debris also lies with the contractors, and this must be completed by May 31. The NMC sanitation department has been directed to inspect whether the debris has been cleared, and any contractors found guilty of negligence will face heavy fines, said Chaudhari.

3.2L in 21 BMC wards inch closer to pure water supply
Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started executing the Rs 333 crore project of setting up a water distribution network to supply filtered water across Rajarhat-Gopalpur , covering BMC wards 1 to 21. Overhead tanks and underground reservoirs will also be set up under the scheme. After completion of the project, surface-treated filtered water will be supplied from the New Town water treatment plant to households, benefiting close to 3.2 lakh people, officials said. "As per the plan, there will be 14 overhead tanks, four underground reservoirs, and a new distribution network line for supplying filtered water. Soil testing was done and work to lay the main distribution lines has started. The entire project is expected to be completed in two years," said a BMC official. The funding is being done under the Centre's AMRUT scheme. Presently, several areas in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur belt, which includes areas surrounding the airport, Kaikhali, Baguiati, Tegharia, parts of Kestopur, and other adjacent places, don't have overhead tanks or a distribution network for supplying filtered water to the households. Residents in these areas mostly depend on underground water reserves. This vast belt was previously under the erstwhile Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality, which was dissolved after the entire area was integrated with Bidhannagar in 2015 during the formation of BMC. When it comes to filtered water, BMC receives close to 17 MGD per day at present. BMC has also come up with a blueprint to revamp the 2,700 km-long water supply pipeline network in Salt Lake. Another civic official claimed that the demand for water in Salt Lake was increasing with the rise in population.
