Body of woman found chained 'by the neck' and tied underwater by two dumbbells

A woman's body has reportedly been found chained by the neck and tied underwater by two concrete dumbbells at a popular fishing spot in Thailand.
The corpse was discovered floating near the Ban Tha Yai pier in Phang Nga on August 8 - sparking grisly murder investigation.
Police Lieutenant Pheerawit Chaichanyut of Khok Kloi Police Station said officers responded with rescue workers after receiving a call from shocked locals.
The victim, whose identity, address, and nationality are still unknown, was wearing grey shorts and a brown round-neck T-shirt, The Thaiger reports.
Police estimate she had been dead for around two days before being found in the murky waters.
Officers found a heavy chain wrapped tightly around the woman's neck, secured with two concrete dumbbells.
Investigators believe the method was intended to weigh the body down and conceal it underwater.
But, despite this, the body still floated to the surface and drifted close to shore, where it was discovered.
The corpse has been sent for a full autopsy to confirm the cause of death and whether the victim was alive before entering the water.
Police have not ruled out murder, due to the weighted restraints suggesting foul play.
Local community leaders and neighbouring districts have been contacted and asked to check for any missing persons that match the victim's description.
CCTV footage from the pier and surrounding waterways is also being reviewed in an attempt to trace suspicious movements in the days before the discovery, reported KhaoSod.
'This is a serious case, and we are treating it as a possible murder,' Pol. Lt. Pheerawit said.
'The way the body was weighted down points towards an attempt to conceal it.'

Mali's former prime minister Maiga taken into custody amid corruption probe

Former Malian prime minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga was taken into custody on Tuesday on accusations of corruption, his lawyer said, as the West African country 's military junta has ramped up arrests of top politicians in recent weeks. Maiga's lawyer, Cheick Oumar Konaré, told The Associated Press the former prime minister was taken in for questioning earlier this month by the National Economic and Financial Unit, which is responsible for fighting corruption, as part of an investigation into allegations of misuse of public property. 'Former Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga has been taken into custody by officers from the brigade of the National Economic and Financial Unit,' Konaré said. 'We are contesting his detention because the former prime minister has no intention of fleeing the country or destroying evidence,' he added. In November 2024, Maïga was dismissed from his role as prime minister, days after he criticized the military regime for postponing elections. Following his dismissal, Maiga continued to criticize the military regime in the media. Earlier this month, another former prime minister, Moussa Mara, was imprisoned after tweeting his support for jailed critics of the ruling military junta. Mali has been ruled by military leaders since a junta seized power in 2020 and staged another coup the following year. In June, the country's leader, Gen. Assimi Goita, was granted an additional five years in power, despite the junta's earlier promises of a return to civilian rule by March 2024. The move followed the military regime's dissolution of political parties in May.

Great white shark is seen near popular beaches in Maine, sparking a warning from police

Reports of a large great white shark near some of Maine's most popular beaches have prompted police in one coastal town to issue a warning on Tuesday. Scarborough 's marine resource officer got word of the roughly 10- to 12-foot shark (over 3 meters) on Monday, police said. The shark was spotted in the area of Crescent Beach State Park, Higgins Beach and Pine Point Beach, they said, all located within a half-hour's drive of Portland. Commercial clam fisherman David Lancaster was able to take drone footage of the shark swimming just beneath the surface, its grey fin poking through the gentle swells. He said seeing the big shark was 'magnificent,' if a little surprising. 'It was pretty crazy to see in the local waters. There are some really amazing creatures in the sea,' Lancaster, who loves in nearby Scarborough, said. 'It's in the back of your head, but you have to accept it.' White sharks, made famous 50 years ago in the movie 'Jaws,' are not commonly seen off Maine, but have lived in the state's waters for centuries. Sightings ticked up in recent years, and some scientists say the state's growing population of seals could be a reason for more shark activity. White sharks feed on marine mammals such as seals. The police department in Scarborough said they were circulating the drone footage 'for public situational awareness' after the big fish was spotted. 'We are sharing this information promptly to keep the community informed,' police said in a statement. Fatal shark bites for humans are exceedingly rare. The first recorded fatal shark attack in Maine happened in the summer of 2020 when a great white shark killed 63-year-old Julie Dimperio Holowach of New York City. She was attacked off Bailey Island, around 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Portland. The state responded with efforts to provide beachgoers with more warning about the presence of sharks.
