Texans' C.J. Gardner-Johnson doesn't hold back on thoughts surrounding offseason trade
C.J. Gardner-Johnson is happy to be a member of the Houston Texans, but that doesn't mean he's over his departure from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Garnder-Johnson, the centerpiece of the Texans' biggest offseason move built around trading former first-round pick Kenyon Green, admitted he didn't take kindly to the deal initially. One year after helping the Eagles win their Super Bowl, he was off to a new team in a new locker room for the fourth straight offseason.
He believes that he's been slighted throughout his career to date, and the Eagles might be the worst at doing him dirty.
"I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business," Gardner-Johnson told KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson. "Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never! Led the league in interceptions. What more do you want?"
Part of the reason Gardner-Johnson believes he was traded has nothing to do with his on-field play, but rather his antics after the hit. He was fined six times for a total of $101,298, per Spotrac.com, during the 2024 season, including two fines up to $45,000 from the Eagles' Week 16 loss to the Washington Commanders, which ended with him being ejected after multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
"People say, 'He's a hazard, he's this, he's that.' I never been no hazard, bro," Gardner-Johnson told Wilson. "They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one."
Signed to a three-year deal last offseason, Gardner-Johnson is under contract with Houston through 2026. He plans on proving his impact in Philadelphia by being the glue that keeps the Texans together en route to another AFC South division title.
The good news for Texans fans? Since 2022, any team Gardner-Johnson has played for has made at least the conference championship, including the Detroit Lions in 2023. After being traded despite his impact on bringing a title to Philly, the veteran defensive back is now fueled to take DeMeco Ryans' defense to the next level.
"I got three more championships in me," Gardner-Johnson said. "I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch."
The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 7 at SoFi Stadium.

Demetrious Johnson breaks down what makes Khamzat Chimaev's wrestling so dominant

Former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson is in awe of Khamzat Chimaev's wrestling dominance. No one has figured out an answer for Chimaev's wrestling, which he used to outgrapple Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 and quickly run through Robert Whittaker for a first-round submission at UFC 308. Now Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) will look to fulfill his championship potential when he challenges middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 319 headliner (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at United Center in Chicago. Johnson broke down Chimaev's grappling prowess while watching his fights against former champions Usman and Whittaker. "When you look at Khamzat, you have to look at him when he jumps on you, you better be ready for the best – you better have the best wrestling, anti-wrestling, and fighting skill and ready to rock and roll," Johnson said on his YouTube channel. "Because once he locks on, he's going to be looking to go to that position, which I call home. He's going to sit there and wait and then see what you're going to do. "Once you start to post, he's going to take out that post, he's going to jump to the other side, take out the other post, get his hooks in, and beat you up until you give him your neck or neck crank, and he's going to take it. That's what he wants to do. He doesn't want to do anything on the feet. If he could, he would wrestle all day, every day." Oddsmakers favor Chimaev to remain undefeated and dethrone Du Plessis as he is a -180 favorite, according to DraftKings, and even higher on other sports books.

NFL appeals Nevada Supreme Court ruling allowing Jon Gruden's lawsuit to proceed

LAS VEGAS -- The NFL will appeal the Nevada Supreme Court's ruling Monday that former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden can proceed with his lawsuit and not go through the league for arbitration. The league will request a rehearing from the same court that overturned a prior Nevada Supreme Court panel ruling in May 2024 that the matter could go to arbitration. But in October, Gruden was granted a hearing by the full court. Gruden filed a lawsuit in 2021 against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' to destroy his career by leaking old emails he sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments that pressured the Raiders to fire him. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.' Gruden was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011-18 when the emails were sent. He was the Raiders' coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California. He's seeking monetary damages, saying that selective disclosure of the emails and their publication by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times ruined his career and endorsement contracts. Gruden coached the Raiders in Oakland from 1998 to 2001, then led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for seven years, winning a Super Bowl title in 2003. He spent several years as a TV analyst for ESPN before being hired by the Raiders again in 2018. He later consulted for the New Orleans Saints in 2023. He is now a part-owner and consultant for the Nashville Kats, a team in the Arena Football One league. ___

Denzel Washington Unloads on Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: 'Wouldn't Know What It Is To Win'

Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington didn't hold back in his critique of the Dallas Cowboys during an appearance on ESPN's 'First Take.' Washington laid into owner Jerry Jones amid the contract saga with All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons and the seemingly never-ending soap opera surrounding the franchise. 'There's box office and there's Oscars, Jerry. Been awhile, huh?' the Cowboys superfan said. 'You ain't been to the show, you wouldn't know. Haven't been to the show so you wouldn't know what it is to win.' Washington was pointing to the fact that the Cowboys haven't sniffed the Super Bowl — let alone the NFC Championship game — in 30 seasons. The actor would add: 'All money ain't good money, Jerry.' Jones and the Cowboys have endured a tumultuous year. After an injury-ravaged season that saw Dallas miss the playoffs with a 7-10 record, head coach Mike McCarthy was fired. Instead of finding a new voice outside the organization, Jones decided to stay in-house and promote offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, a move critics widely panned. If that wasn't enough, Jones is now embroiled in a training camp controversy surrounding their best player. Parsons is entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $24 million and requested a trade on Aug. 1 after contract negotiations hit an impasse. Jones has yet to speak with Parsons' agent since, claiming the two had a handshake agreement on a new contract despite having nothing in writing.
