‘Keeps me optimistic': why You've Got Mail is my feelgood movie

Yahoo10-03-2025

There's a montage in the opening of You've Got Mail that is so sentimentally sweet that it feels like the cinematic equivalent of a pumpkin spiced latte. As the guitars of the Cranberries' Dreams jangle, the film's two leads, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, leave their respective homes and walk through an autumnal-hued New York City with smiles on their faces, their characters unaware that earlier that morning they were anonymously exchanging emails. I must have seen this opening more than 100 times, and while I'd never be so happy to walk to work, it always fills me with a romantic appreciation for life's potential.

I can't remember the first time I watched this Nora Ephron-penned and -directed romcom, but I do recall that as a child I would load it into the DVD player at every available opportunity. Based on the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner, and centred on two competing booksellers – Ryan's Kathleen Kelly, who runs her mother's independent children's bookstore, and Hanks's Joe Fox, the heir to an impersonal Barnes & Noble-style mega-chain – it's a standard enemies-to-lovers affair, albeit with a twist that these two rivals are unknowingly emotionally involved online.
Growing up, I was enamoured of the film's depiction of Manhattan. It seemed charming, a place of small businesses, neighbourhood markets and warring bookstores. But this provinciality extended beyond an idealised vision of New York to cyberspace. When it was released in 1998, the internet hadn't greedily consumed every aspect of our lives. Instead, it remained a curiosity, a strangely intimate place where, as they do in the film, two people from the same area could meet in a chatroom, begin emailing, and end up together.
Nowadays it seems natural that two people might connect online before meeting IRL, but at the turn of the millennium, online dating was the land of oddities and saddos, descriptions that suit neither Joe nor Kathleen. That such a connection could be found in this at-the-time-unexplored realm of the internet was hopeful to me as a gay kid whose first interactions with other queer people involved lurking in chatrooms at night. It's also why, as I've grown older and weathered the rise of social media and apps like Grindr, I find myself returning to You've Got Mail: it may be naive and soppy, but as a single person it keeps me optimistic that genuine connection may still be found by logging on to your computer (or unlocking your iPhone).
In the film, online communication isn't reduced to sub-tweets and headless torsos asking for hookups, but is instead a place for meaningful correspondence in the form of letters. And these letters, sent as emails and delivered as voiceovers by Hanks and Ryan, are wonderful. Here Ephron's script offers up delightful observations about life: Starbucks, Joe suggests, is 'for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee', while Kathleen ponders about seeing a butterfly leaving the subway 'where I assume it went to Bloomingdale's to buy a hat that will turn out to be a mistake, as almost all hats are'. If only the endless back-and-forth of messages on Hinge were as enlightening.
Still, You've Got Mail does have some issues. Joe's behaviour is at best creepy and at worst sociopathic: when he learns that he's been emailing Kathleen before she does, he withholds that information, puts her small bookshop out of business, and then engineers a friendship with her so that by the end she hopes that he and her anonymous pen pals are one and the same. Kathleen, meanwhile, appears ambivalent about being manipulated by her capitalist oppressor and is even nonchalant about whether her mother-like figure Birdie (Jean Stapleton) was romantically involved with the fascist dictator Francisco Franco: 'It happened in Spain,' she says. 'People do stupid things in foreign countries.' Thankfully, Ephron's otherwise razor-sharp script, aided by the on-screen chemistry between Ryan and Hanks, means you can overlook these foibles. And when the pair kiss in the final scene, Harry Nilsson's cover of Over the Rainbow playing in the background, the feelgood factor is undeniable.
For Kathleen it's also an ending that feels well earned. 'I lead a small life. Well, valuable, but small,' she writes in one email to Joe. 'And sometimes I wonder: do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave?' By the time the credits roll, she's been forced to find out and grabbed the opportunity for a new and potentially more expansive life. All I can do is hope for the same. Until that time comes, I've got my trusty DVD at the ready.
You've Got Mail is available on Hulu in the US and on Now TV in the UK

Jessica Alba Keeping It Civil With Ex-Husband for Kids, ‘Source' Claims

and her ex-husband, Cash Warren, are seemingly prioritizing peace after the divorce and keeping it civil for the good of their kids. The former couple exhibited their cooperation and understanding in their cozy Easter Sunday photos with a full house. Now, a source claimed they are likely planning more getaways in the near future, which is nothing short of a consolation for their three children — Honor, Haven, and Hayes. A Life & Style source revealed that Jessica Alba's main concerns include maintaining the 'status quo' for her kids and 'embracing change' after her and Cash Warren's divorce. The former couple is reportedly remaining civil despite breaking up. So, for Alba, 'doing holidays' with her ex-husband 'feels like an important tradition to try to maintain' out of consideration for their three young children. The insider continued that their youngest, Hayes, who is only 7 years old, wanted both his parents around for his Easter egg hunt. Furthermore, it's important for the actor that their teenage daughters, Honor and Haven, 'feel they have some semblance of a family.' Alba believes taking 'a family trip together' could prove vital to sustain their connection. The family of five 'can rent a villa so they can have separate rooms,' given that their split changed the family dynamics. Nevertheless, Alba has 'got no designs on getting back together' with her ex-husband. 'This is really for the kids more than anything,' the source confirmed, adding that the mom of three is only following Gwyneth Paltrow's 'advice on conscious uncoupling.' This is reportedly something Paltrow and her former husband, Chris Martin, engaged in, and it was a 'healing' experience for them. Alba and Warren separated in December and filed for divorce two months later, calling it quits after a 16-year-long marriage. A second insider had previously claimed that it had been over for quite some time 'in a romance sense.' In fact, there was no 'ugliness' in their breakup, and their divorce has been 'going smoothly' so far. Food Network star Guy Fieri loves Florida but sold one of his homes in Palm Beach County

Florida is a favorite of celebrity chef Guy Fieri with dozens of restaurants statewide featured on his Food Network show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." But does Palm Beach County hold a special place in the spikey blonde's heart over other Sunshine State locations? Maybe. In 2022, the Mayor of Flavortown donated donated $20,000 to Lake Worth Community High School's culinary academy. More recently, Fieri fed Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office employees from his new East Coast Disaster Relief Trailer in April. And in November his foundation joined Rocco's Tacos & Tequila Bar in Boca Raton to raise money for hospitality workers affected by 2024 hurricanes. Fieri has also bought and sold real estate in two Palm Beach County cities, including a sale this year of a waterfront home in Lake Worth Beach. Guy Fieri, whose birth name is Guy Ramsay Ferry, bought a waterfront home in March 2021 for a recorded $3.9 million in Lake Worth Beach, which is just south of West Palm Beach. The 7,400-square-foot home is in an exclusive seven-home gated community where one of his neighbors was Olympia Bishop, sister to actress Brook Shields. Two years after the purchase in Lake Worth Beach, Fieri bought a second home on Singer Island in Riviera Beach. The $7.3 million Mediterranean-style house is on a coveted corner lot on Singer Island in Riviera Beach less than 2 miles from the Lake Worth Inlet, also called the Palm Beach Inlet. The buyer in official Palm Beach County records on both homes was a limited liability company called Gus Ritchie 1 — a possible play on the names Gus Ferrari and Guy Ritchie, which Fieri has said fans have called him by mistake. More: Flavortown returns: Guy Fieri's 'DDD' Food Network series features 4 Palm Beach County restaurants Fieri put his Lake Worth Beach home on the market in September 2023. The list price for the 6,000-square-foot home was $8.75 million. That price was slashed several times before it sold in January for $7 million. While that's nearly double what Fieri paid for the home, it's $1.75 million less than what he hoped to get for it. The price drop wasn't unusual as the housing market has cooled from its rocket ship ascent during the pandemic. About 28% of Palm Beach County single-family homes were forced to drop prices in January 2025, according to the online brokerage firm Redfin. That increased to 30% in April.. The buyers of the 24-year-old house were Las Vegas restauranteurs Frank Bonanno and his wife, Betty Pellegrino Bonanno, according to Palm Beach County official records. Frank Bonanno is president of Fifth Avenue Restaurant Group. His first forays into the culinary industry included the 1976 creation of the Famous Chocolate Chip Cookie Co., which eventually was sold to the Mrs. Fields cookie empire. Fifth Avenue operates more than 40 restaurants in the Las Vegas area, according to its website. Fieri still owns the property he purchased on Singer Island in Riviera Beach. The nearly 10,000-square-foot waterfront property has room for a 100-foot-yacht. The Singer Island home is not in a gated community but is located on the dead-end street Coral Way. It has 230 feet of water frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway and a canal. Built in 2008, it has a total of 9,870 square feet with 6,620 under air conditioning. There is a three-car garage, a large pool, summer kitchen, five bedrooms, hand-carved coral stone fireplaces and pecky cypress ceilings. More: Sneak peek inside Guy Fieri's new waterfront home on Singer Island near West Palm Beach Whether Fieri kept the furniture, which included a smothering of leather and heavy dark wood pieces, is unknown but sources familiar with the sale said at the time that the chef visited the home more than once and would likely undertake a hefty remodel. Prior to Fieri buying the home in 2023 for $7.3 million, it had last sold in June 2022 for $7.9 million. The property is not homesteaded, which is a designation that caps property tax increases if the owner registers the home as their primary residence. It's unknown if Guy Fieri plans to move to Florida permanently. He told the Bradenton Herald in 2021 that his family would stay in Northern California at least until his youngest son Ryder finishes high school. Ryder Fieri graduated high school in 2024. Guy Fieri and his wife Lori moved Ryder into his dormitory at San Diego State University in August of that year, according to People. Fieri's older son, Hunter Fieri, graduated with a master's degree in business administration from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. William and Kate ‘Keen to Pull Back a Little' and Enjoy Time Together After Cancer Recovery

and Kate Middleton are more in love than ever these days as they get ready to become king and queen, and a source exclusively tells Life & Style they've been granted permission from ailing King Charles to take more time off in order to enjoy the princess' rebounding health with as little pressure on them as possible. 'William really stepped up during Kate's illness. He took on so many extra duties even in the midst of dealing with a sick wife,' the insider says. 'It's what had to be done, and he got on with it, but it certainly took a huge toll.' The Princess of Wales, 43, recently bounced back from a terrible bout with cancer throughout most of 2024. She was admitted to the hospital for "planned abdominal surgery' in January that year, though details at the time were scarce and the Palace said she would be off her feat and out of the public eye until at least Easter. "She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,' the Crown said at the time. William, 42, took up public duties in February, appearing alone at several functions throughout the spring. A strange incident concerning an altered photo published on British Mother's Day in March led to intense speculation — and even quite a bit of criticism — but later that month she gave an update and announced her cancer diagnosis, putting the matter to bed as royal watchers around the world shared their sympathies. After a successful round of chemotherapy, she reappeared for the first time in June looking healthy and from then on has been slowly returning to full duties. 'Now that she's feeling better and the constant fear of losing her has eased off, William's big focus has been on making the most of their time and this second chance at life together,' the insider reveals. 'He's spoken to his father and gotten the go-ahead to tone down the frenetic pace, Charles doesn't want to see William burn out and he certainly doesn't want to overload Kate when she's still fragile.' The King, 76, has been dealing with his own health woes since announcing he's also undergoing chemotherapy in February 2024, with the source adding, 'No doubt Charles' own battle with cancer has made him especially sensitive to what Kate has gone through.' With that understanding, 'He's told her and William to take whatever time they need. They won't go overboard but they are very keen to pull back a little so they can focus on each other more. That means more romantic dinners, more long walks and more holidays.' 'They're mapping out summer plans right now, with the usual family trips to Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly, but they're also looking to take a romantic holiday just the two of them and talking about going back to the Seychelles where they honeymooned.'
