AIIMS Mangalagiri to get cornea transplant centre soon
The development follows the Minister's visit to AIIMS Mangalagiri on February 28, where he reviewed hospital operations and identified key gaps in infrastructure and staffing. Based on discussions with medical officers, he recognised the urgent need for a specialised cornea transplant facility.
As the establishment of such a centre falls under the purview of the state government, Dr. Pemmasani escalated the issue to the district medical and health officer. A committee from the State Health Department later conducted a site inspection and submitted a favourable report recommending the centre.
Thanks to persistent follow-up and coordination with state health authorities, the proposal received formal approval. With clearances now granted, the Cornea Transplant Centre is expected to become operational soon, offering advanced eye care and transplant services to thousands in the region.

Kerala MP Kodikunnil Suresh slams Centre for denying AIIMS to State
Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the Union government's 'continued neglect' in approving an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for Kerala. In a statement issued here on Sunday (August 10, 2025), Mr. Suresh said the State was in urgent need of advanced tertiary healthcare facilities. The Mavelikara MP said he had raised a question in the Lok Sabha on August 8, seeking details from the Centre regarding the steps taken to establish an AIIMS in Kerala, the locations proposed by the State, and any feasibility studies conducted for central or southern Kerala. 'The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav informed the House that Kerala had proposed four sites for AIIMS at Kinaloor in Kozhikode, Kattakada in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Ernakulam. However, the Minister admitted that none of these proposals have been approved in the current phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY),' Mr. Suresh said. He said that while the government had sanctioned super-speciality blocks at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Alappuzha MCH, Kozhikode MCH, and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, these measures were no substitute for a full-fledged AIIMS. 'It is deeply disappointing that Kerala, with its exceptional health indicators, dense population, and strategic importance, remains one of the few States without an AIIMS. The Centre must end this neglect and include Kerala in the next phase of AIIMS expansion without delay. Our people deserve direct access to world-class medical education and advanced healthcare within the State,' Mr. Suresh said. He urged the Union government to prioritise Kerala in AIIMS allotment, pointing out that such an institute would significantly reduce patient migration, relieve the burden on existing hospitals, and strengthen medical research in the State.

Para-Athlete Among 2 Dead After Being Bitten By Rabid Dog In Odisha
Bhubaneswar: A national-level para-athlete has died after being bitten by a rabid dog in Odisha's Bolangir. The dog reportedly went on a biting spree on July 23, attacking six people, including 33-year-old para-athlete Jogendra Chhatria, and some students who were on the way to school. They were then taken to the Bolangir district headquarters hospital and later referred to Burla. While four of them recovered, Chhatria and another victim, Hrushikesh Rana, 48, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Saturday. The Centre last month said that India recorded over 37 lakh dog bite cases and 54 suspected human rabies deaths in 2024. According to data shared by Union Minister SP Singh Baghel in the Parliament on July 22, the total number of dog bite cases stood at 37,17,336, while the total 'suspected human rabies deaths' were 54 last year. He said that municipalities are responsible for controlling the stray dog population, adding that they are implementing the Animal Birth Control Programme to regulate their population.

One of its most successful initiatives, Fit India Sundays on Cycle, has evolved into a nationwide campaign blending health, sustainability, and community spirit. What is Fit India Sundays on Cycle? Launched on December 17, 2024 by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the programme builds on the earlier Fit India Cycling Drive. The weekly event, held every Sunday, encourages citizens of all ages to take up cycling, a low-cost, eco-friendly form of exercise that improves cardiovascular health, boosts mental well-being, and fights obesity. How to participate? Participation is open to all.
