Para-Athlete Among 2 Dead After Being Bitten By Rabid Dog In Odisha
A national-level para-athlete has died after being bitten by a rabid dog in Odisha's Bolangir. The dog reportedly went on a biting spree on July 23, attacking six people, including 33-year-old para-athlete Jogendra Chhatria, and some students who were on the way to school.
They were then taken to the Bolangir district headquarters hospital and later referred to Burla.
While four of them recovered, Chhatria and another victim, Hrushikesh Rana, 48, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Saturday.
The Centre last month said that India recorded over 37 lakh dog bite cases and 54 suspected human rabies deaths in 2024.
According to data shared by Union Minister SP Singh Baghel in the Parliament on July 22, the total number of dog bite cases stood at 37,17,336, while the total 'suspected human rabies deaths' were 54 last year.
He said that municipalities are responsible for controlling the stray dog population, adding that they are implementing the Animal Birth Control Programme to regulate their population.

20 bikers ride from Bandipur to Bidar to combat drugs in Karnataka
BENGALURU: Twenty motorcyclists, including four women, will ride from Bandipur in south Karnataka to Bidar in the north, covering a distance of 1,000 km, starting August 29, carrying with them a message that the Karnataka aims to take to every corner of the state - 'Say no to drugs'. The campaign, taken up under the Union government's initiative through the Department of Social Justice and the Narcotics Control Bureau, is first of its kind under the banner 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan 2025' (Drug-free India). The rally to be held from August 29 to 31, will be flagged off at Bandipur by forest officials. NSS, NCC and My Bharat volunteers in each city will join the campaign by forming human chains at popular junctions, distributing pamphlets, and participating in discussions on the dangers of drug abuse. State NSS Officer Dr Pratap Lingaiah said that the participants have been drawn from different departments and organisations. These include three representatives each from the police, health, forest, NCC, and NSS, along with five from the public. 'All riders have prior experience of long-distance motorcycling, with some having completed journeys of over 2,000 km,' Lingaiah said. The initiative is the first such long-distance motorcycle rally against drugs in Karnataka, covering the state from its southern tip to the northern border. The rally will conclude in Bidar on August 31.

Five Electrocuted To Death During Janmashtami Celebrations In Hyderabad
At least five people were electrocuted to death and four others were injured when a Rath taken out as part of Sri Krishnashtami celebrations came in contact with an electric wire in Hyderabad. The incident occurred late Sunday night at Gokulnagar in Ramanthapur when people were participating in the procession. The Rath was being carried in the hands by a group of nine persons after the vehicle on which it was being carried broke down during the procession. They were thrown away due to the impact of the shock. The incident sent panic among participants in the procession. The participants ran helter-skelter. Police rushed to the spot and launched the rescue efforts. The victims were given first aid on the spot and subsequently shifted to a private hospital, where five people were declared brought dead by doctors. The deceased have been identified as Krishna (21), Rudra Vikas (39), Rajendra Reddy (45), Srikant Reddy (35) and Suresh Yadav (34). Four others, including Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy's gunman, Srinivas, were injured. They were admitted to a hospital. According to police, the incident occurred near Yadav Function Hall in Gokulnagar when the Rath came into contact with a high-tension wire overhead. The bodies of the victims were shifted to the mortuary of the government-run Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad. A pall of gloom descended on the area after the incident. Police registered a case and took up an investigation. Leaders cutting across political parties expressed grief over the tragedy. They demanded that the government provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and provide the best medical treatment to those injured. Meanwhile, two groups of youth clashed during Krishnashtami celebrations in the Kukatpally area in Hyderabad on Sunday night. A person suffered bleeding injuries in the clash. Police suspect that old enmity between the two groups led to the clash. Police registered a case and took up further investigation.

BJD chief and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital here for dehydration, is now "stable" and likely to be discharged on Monday (August 18, 2025), a source at the health facility said. Mr. Patnaik was admitted to SUM Ultimate Medicare, Bhubaneswar, on Sunday (August 17, 2025) due to dehydration. "Naveen ji is now stable and is likely to be discharged during the day," the hospital source said. The 78-year-old politician has been "responding well" to treatment, and his condition has been "improving", said a bulletin issued by the private hospital on Sunday (August 17, 2025). BJD vice president Sanjay Das Burma said, "Patnaik is now stable and has recovered from the dehydration problem." Mr. Patnaik, the leader of opposition in the assembly, complained of uneasiness on Saturday (August 16, 2025) night, and some doctors visited his residence, Naveen Niwas, BJD leaders said.
