Massive Google Cloud outage disrupts popular internet services
NEW YORK (AP) — Popular online services across the globe were disrupted Thursday due to ongoing issues at Google Cloud.
Tens of thousands of users of Spotify, Discord and other platforms began noticing issues with their services early in the afternoon, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages.
Outage reports for music streamer Spotify in particular, peaked around 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time before dropping off, and some users began saying their access was restored.
Google's Cloud status page said an incident with their systems affected clients in the U.S. and abroad. The company also posted that services are starting to recover after its engineers identified and began to mitigate the issue.
"We have identified the root cause and applied appropriate mitigations," Google Cloud said. It added that there is no estimate for when the issue would be fully resolved.
Google Cloud, which hosts a significant amount of services on the internet, has become the fastest growing part of Alphabet Inc., even though the company still makes most of its money from Google's ubiquitous search engine. Google Cloud's revenue last year totaled $43.2 billion, a 31% increase from 2023. By comparison, Alphabet's overall revenue grew by 14% last year.

Spotify is adding the ability to remotely download playlists to secondary devices
Spotify is rolling out a new feature that lets Premium subscribers remotely download playlists to additional devices. For instance, a user could initiate a download on an iPhone for an iPad or for a backup phone ahead of a trip. That's all fine and good, and useful in limited circumstances. The big news here, however, is that this functionality also works with smartwatches, with integration for Wear OS devices and Apple Watch models. Nothing ruins a good walk or run like forgetting to download a playlist, so this lets people square that away whenever they think of it, even when the secondary device is out of reach. Spotify is also introducing a new "Manage Downloads" button to assist with the aforementioned feature. This button accompanies playlists and provides a list of devices in which a particular batch of songs has been downloaded. That way folks can be sure they aren't reaching Spotify's five-device limit the company places on downloads. This stuff is rolling out right now for users across the globe. It could take a few weeks to reach everyone. A version of this tool has previously been available for Apple Watch users, but this is the first time something like this will be available to those in the Wear OS ecosystem. Tillsonburg the Next Stop for Tourism Oxford
By Jeff Helsdon LJI Reporter Your Next Stop could be Tillsonburg with a new Tourism Oxford promotion. Meredith Maywood, Product Development & Marketing Tourism Specialist for Tourism Oxford, provided insight into a new initiative called ' Your Next Stop' during an update to council at the May 30 meeting. Your Next Step is a program designed to promote tourism stops that are located in close proximity to each other. Maywood said the concept is to reduce drive time and have more time for fun. 'People are spending less time on the road, and they're visiting more activities and places within the destination,' she said, adding she is working on adding Tillsonburg to the program the following week. Maywood also provided insight into some of the other work that Tourism Oxford is involved in. The agency is currently working with 190 tourism-related businesses in the county. These businesses employ a total of 3,415 people in the county. In 2023, there were 670,000 visitor trips from Canada and the United States to Oxford County, equivalent to 1.4 million nights. The total number of nights refers to the number of nights spent by anyone who visited Oxford and stayed overnight for either business or personal purposes. Tourism Oxford is tracking tourism trends within the industry. 'We're always wanting to know what's happening with visitors, what they're interested in, so we can then better support the businesses to understand what consumers are looking for,' she said. One emerging trend is that travelers want to ensure their visit has a positive impact on the community they visit. For example, she said in parts of Europe, tourists pick up waste on some waterways. Another thing being observed is an interest in culture, Maywood said, not just taking photos, but people are also 'looking to immerse themselves in activities as well.' Popular tourism trends include cycling, experiential tourism, and a desire to hear local stories. Tourism Oxford is also developing an ambassador program to promote the area to friends and relatives visiting residents.
