Shiromani Akali Dal protests against Punjab's land pooling scheme in Ludhiana and plans strategy for 2027 assembly elections.

Ludhiana: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president
Sukhbir Singh Badal
on Wednesday led a high-pitched protest against the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) land-pooling scheme, vowing to block any attempt by the govt to acquire farmland.
Framed as a battle to "save Punjab", the protest also served as a political curtain-raiser to the 2027 assembly elections — even as signs of disorganisation and internal friction simmered beneath the surface.
Addressing the protesters outside the office of Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada), Sukhbir accused the AAP govt of conspiring to "rob farmers of their land to fill its coffers". He warned the govt that the agitation would spread to other cities unless it scrapped the scheme.
"We will not let them take even an inch," Sukhbir declared, adding that the SAD was committed to defending Punjab's agricultural interests.
The accompanying farmer unionists echoed the sentiment, warning of long-term economic damage. "The land-pooling scheme is a fraud dressed as development," claimed farmer unionist Sukhpal Singh. "The land will be devalued, and our children will suffer." SAD youth leader Jaskaran Singh Ayali Kalan said the land acquisition was not as "voluntary" as the govt claimed.

"The entire parcel is being notified for acquisition, even for those who don't opt in," he said.
Senior SAD members Balwinder Singh Bhundar and Ranjit Singh Dhillon called for unity among Punjabis, likening the current movement to past protests against alleged scams under previous govts. They also signalled a readiness to launch sustained demonstrations if needed. The protest saw participation from a broad lineup of SAD bigwigs including Daljit Singh Cheema, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Hira Singh Gabria, and others.
However, local organisers failed to match the enthusiasm from the central leadership fully. District SAD chief Bhupinder Singh Bhinda arrived late, and local members reportedly jostled for stage presence, prompting Cheema to warn that the stage could collapse under the crowd.
Tensions in Dakha: SAD eyes Ayali alternative
Following the protest, Sukhbir Badal visited the Dakha constituency, where he reportedly began scouting for an alternative to incumbent MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali.
The move comes amid rising tensions between the two Akali leaders. Despite being defeated by AAP's H S Phoolka in 2017, Ayali reclaimed his seat in the 2019 byelection and remains a dominant figure in the region — posing a political challenge for SAD's leadership heading into 2027.
BJP worker's symbolic protest
In a parallel protest, BJP member Jai Parkash Jain, also known as Titu Bania, staged a symbolic demonstration outside the Glada office. Holding a lock and key, he threatened to "lock" the office for pushing a policy he claimed would destroy Punjab's farmland and hurt farmers. While SAD aims to reclaim lost ground with aggressive opposition to land reforms, Wednesday's protest revealed both its potential and its pitfalls — energised leadership at the top, but a fractured and uncoordinated base below.

Standing Committee Finally Takes Shape

New Delhi: After a long wait, the formation process of the standing committee in Municipal Corporation of Delhi gained clarity on Monday following the elections to two of its seats on Monday. While Rafia Mahir, an AAP councillor from Bazar Sitaram, won a standing committee member seat from City-Sadar Paharganj, Jagmohan Mehlawat, a BJP councillor from Vasant Kunj, won the election from South zone. The 18-member committee now has 17 elected representatives, with BJP holding 10 seats and AAP securing seven. The final member's election is scheduled during Tuesday's house meeting. BJP's councillor from Gautampuri and former mayor in the erstwhile east corporation, Satya Sharma, and AAP councillor from Jaitpur, Hema, filed nomination papers for the post. BJP, already having secured a majority, is well-positioned to have its candidate elected as the standing committee chairman on June 12. The formation of the standing committee has been pending for two and a half years for various reasons. "A proposal for the constitution of the standing committee on June 12 will be tabled in the house meeting on Tuesday... We will focus on improving healthcare, education, etc," said mayor Raja Iqbal Singh. Several development projects over Rs 5 crore are waiting for the committee's nod. They include finalising an agency for door-to-door garbage collection in central and west zones, opening a dog park, engaging a new toll tax operator, and Shahjahanabad Interpretation Centre. The works for finalising the layout plan for projects belonging to various agencies are also pending. BJP demonstrated its strength in the MCD ward committee elections on Monday by securing the chairman positions in eight wards: Central, South, Shahdara North, Keshavpuram, Civil Lines, Narela and Najafgarh. AAP claimed the chairman's post in four zones: City-Sadar Paharganj, Karol Bagh, West and Rohini. The results were disappointing for the newly formed Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP), which contested for the chairman's posts in West and Rohini, and lost in both. Despite joining hands with BJP and having a majority in Rohini, it lost due to cross-voting. AAP councillor Amrit Jain got 11 votes while IVP got 10, despite the fact that IVP and BJP together had 11 members and AAP 10. In the same zone, BJP's Narendra Kumar Singh, who fought for the deputy chairman's seat, received 11 votes and won by one vote. Congress' two councillors boycotted the election. In West zone, there were 25 members (councillors), including 13 from AAP and 12 for the combined BJP-IVP. But in the election, AAP's Nirmal Kumari managed to get 14 votes and IVP only 11. IVP's Mukesh Goel accepted that cross-voting happened. "But we are not losing hope. The party was formed barely last month on May 17 and still contested and performed well," he said. AAP Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj posted on X, "In MCD, AAP has secured victories in four zones. Despite 15 councillors leaving the party to form a new faction with BJP's support, we have maintained control over four out of five zones. I am very proud to share that those who left AAP... and openly received BJP's support in the zone elections failed to win in any zone." South zone witnessed cross-voting, too, resulting in BJP's victory despite AAP holding a majority. Umed Singh of BJP managed to get 10 votes, AAP's Sheetal Chaudhary eight, and one vote was invalid. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that winning the chairmanship in eight zones, along with an additional victory in the standing committee election and the deputy chairman's seat in Rohini, clearly reflected the growing dissatisfaction among AAP's councillors towards the party leadership. "The results have clearly established that AAP is a disintegrating party. Even its elected representatives and party office bearers are drifting away," said Sachdeva. Denying any cross-voting, leader of the opposition Ankush Narag said, "We fought for the people's interests and will continue to do so."

BJP's Sunil Jakhar says AAP removed key clause of land acquisition law, SAD asks about money for policy

Chandigarh: Reacting to the Punjab cabinet approving a new land pooling policy on Monday, opposition parties Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiromani Akali Dal criticised the incumbent AAP govt, with the BJP calling it a "bait" to "bleed Punjab" and SAD terming it a "scheme of corruption. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Hitting out at AAP, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said, "I believe Punjab was used as an ATM from where they took out money. Now the central leaders of AAP from Delhi plan to use Punjab as a private bank." On provisions in the policy as announced by the govt that farmers will get back a part of the land which they can use for developing group housing projects, Jakhar said, "This is a bait. The intent is clear, and they want to bleed Punjab of its money by treating it as a milch cow. Punjab needs to be saved from this." Jakhar said AAP govt "removed" a key clause of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (LARR) Act, 2013, which otherwise could act as a "safety valve" to safeguard farmers' interests. The LARR Act, 2013, requires that the consent of 80% of landowners be obtained for private projects and that the consent of 70% of landowners be obtained for public-private partnership (PPP) projects. The govt proposed to exempt five special categories that were created, namely defence, rural infrastructure, affordable housing, industrial corridors, and infrastructure projects, including PPP projects where the govt owns the land. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema said govt will take possession of farmers' land, but there is no guarantee as to when it could be developed. "It took several years for Ludhiana to expand beyond Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now And the govt plans to acquire 25,000 acres. There will be no habitation in such a vast area for years. From where will this much population come to live in such a huge area? If acquired, farmers will lose their livelihood. Not only farmers, but those in allied agriculture activities, those dealing in agri implements and fertilisers, for instance, would also get hit. It will also directly or indirectly impact landless labourers and the dalit community," he added. Cheema asked the govt where was the money to develop the land it proposed to acquire. "If Rs 1 crore would be required to develop an acre of land, from where will Rs 25,000 crore come for developing 25,000 acres of land? AAP promises like giving Rs 1,000 per month to women remain unfulfilled. The Centre even cut the borrowing limit of the state to take loans. This scheme was, practically, rolled out for corruption. This is aimed at enabling the middlemen from Delhi to make money. Otherwise, there is no justification for it," he said.

Battle lines drawn for Visavadar, Kadi assembly bypolls

Gandhinagar: With Monday as the last day to file nominations for the Visavadar and Kadi assembly bypolls, battle lines have been drawn for the June 19 contest in Gujarat. The Visavadar seat will witness a triangular fight between three Patidars nominated by the BJP, Congress and AAP in the Patidar-dominated constituency. The SC-reserved Kadi byelection will also witness a three-way contest between the BJP, Congress and AAP. Bypolls were necessitated in these two assembly constituencies after Bhupendra Bhayani of AAP resigned and joined the BJP, while sitting Kadi MLA Karshan Solanki of the BJP passed away this year. A three-way contest between Patidar candidates is on the cards for the Visavadar seat, as the BJP nominated Kanti Patel, chairman of the Junagadh district central cooperative bank (DCCB), Congress nominated Nitin Patel (Ranpariya), Bhesan taluka president of the party, and AAP nominated former state unit president Gopal Italia as its candidate. The BJP last won the Visavadar seat in 2007. In 2012, former Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel won the seat on a GPP ticket; in 2017, Harshad Ribadiya of the Congress won; and in 2022, Bhupendra Bhayani of AAP won the seat. For the Kadi seat, the BJP nominated Rajendrakumar Chavda, who has held various posts in the Mehsana district unit of the party, while the Congress nominated Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA who won the seat in the 2012 assembly election. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo Jagdish Chavda, a local leader, has been fielded by AAP from the seat.
