Dozens injured on flight to Amsterdam after plane its severe turbulence

Metro31-07-2025
At least 25 people were hurt after a passenger plane to Amsterdam was caught in turbulence.
A routine flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam turned into a nightmare when the Airbus plane suddenly plunged due to turbulence.
The Delta Air Lines flight DL56 had departed Utah at about 10.30pm yesterday when it got caught in severe conditions over Minnesota.
The Airbus A330-900 plane with 288 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport after the sudden fall caused multiple injuries.
At least 25 people were taken to local hospitals for assessment and treatment.
The plane dropped around 1,000ft within seconds, which must have been 'scary for passengers,' aviation consultant Bernard Lavelle said.
Pilots will try to steer clear of turbulence if they see active weather belts, Mr Lavelle told Metro.
However, turbulence can sometimes be invisible on the radars, known as clear turbulence.
He said: 'Sometimes turbulence is just there, and the most difficult one is clear air turbulence – you are going through a clear sky and suddenly you hit turbulence and you don't see it, so that can be challenging.
'If the pilots can see the turbulence, they will put the seatbelt sign on and get people to return to their seats, and if it is severe, get the crew to sit down as well. But pilots don't always pick it up on radar or haven't had that information.'
Delta Air Lines said: 'Delta flight DL56 – flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam – diverted to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport on Wednesday after the flight encountered significant turbulence while en route.
'The aircraft, an Airbus A330-900, landed safely at MSP, and medical personnel met the flight upon arrival to evaluate customers and crew.
'Twenty-five of those on board were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and care.

'We are grateful for the support of all emergency responders involved. Safety is our number one value at Delta, and our Delta Care Team is working directly with customers to support their immediate needs.'
Mr Lavelle said the biggest risk from turbulence is for people who don't have their seatbelts on and from flying debris.
'Airlines recommend keeping your seatbelt on unless you are stretching your legs or going to the toilet,' he said. More Trending
The expert said that there has been 'an increase in turbulence, especially in Asia.'
Mr Lavelle said: 'There is an increasing number of flights around the world that are subject to turbulence of some kind because of climate change.
'There is a lot of impact on flights. It is becoming more usual than unusual, which is frustrating, but it is still a very small number of flights to put it into context,' he added.
Last year, an Air Europa flight hit turbulence so bad that one of the passengers was catapulted into the overhead lockers.

Cruise passenger injured after water slide breaks and forms gaping hole mid-ride

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A cruise passenger was injured after a water slide shattered while they were using it. An adult passenger was using the slide on Royal Caribbean's cruise ship Icon of the Seas on Thursday (August 7) when a glass panel broke, leaving a huge hole in the slide. Passengers shouted and gasped as water started to pour from the hole, with someone captured on video saying 'someone just fell out of the slide'. Royal Caribbean have since confirmed that nobody fell out of the hole in the slide, and the passenger was treated after reaching the bottom. The Icon of the Seas departed Miami on August 2 and is due to return to Miami on August 9. A spokesperson for the cruise company said: 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. 'The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.' The injured passenger's condition has been described as 'stable', but more details about their injuries have not been made public. The identity of the injured passenger is also not yet known. More Trending Icon of the Seas is home to Category 6, which claims to be the largest water park on a cruise ship and features six slides. One of its slides, a drop waterslide, is claimed to be the tallest at sea. Other water rides include the Frightening Bolt and the Pressure Drop, a mat-racing slide which lets two passengers race head-to-head, and two raft slides where groups can slide together. ‘We lost £250,000 minutes into new ITV show – but we can't complain'

Warning: spoilers ahead for the first episode of The Fortune Hotel series 2. It's never ideal being the first contestants to be eliminated on a primetime gameshow. However, that's the reality that friends and cleaning business partners Chelsey and Briony faced when they embarked on the adventure of competing in ITV's The Fortune Hotel series 2. The second season of the show, which is hosted by Stephen Mangan, launched tonight, with 11 pairs making their way to a hotel in the Caribbean with the aim of checking in and getting their hands on a briefcase containing a £250,000 fortune. Sadly, Chelsey and Briony were eliminated before they even had the chance to enter the hotel, as other players were quicker to figure out a cryptic crossword that informed them where they needed to go. Thankfully, they're still in good spirits about the experience. 'It weren't all bad. We can't really complain. We had an all-inclusive holiday in an absolutely stunning place that not many people would see with your best friend. We got to do things on the island,' Chelsey, who was 34 at the time of filming, tells Metro. 'It was surreal, once in a lifetime.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Briony, who was 33 at the time of filming, adds: 'We went river tubing. Then we went visiting waterfalls, and the sea… The experience looking back on it was fantastic.' At the start of episode one, the competing pairs have to fill out a crossword that, when solved, tells them that they need to head to the reception desk of the hotel. The first batch of couples who reach the correct answer and get to the hotel are safe to scheme another day – but the others are all at risk of being eliminated right away. They each choose a briefcase to open, one of which contains the devastating 'early checkout card'. Briony and Chelsey decided to select briefcase number two, as it's both their favourite number. Unfortunately, they had selected the poisoned chalice. 'Unfortunately, our lucky number just wasn't lucky,' Briony quips. Even though the friends were in the show for a very short amount of time, they still left a big impression with their energetic personalities, racing towards Stephen on the beach after they arrived by boat. Host Stephen Mangan gives Metro the lowdown on what to expect in The Fortune Hotel series two… which he promises will have even more shocks than before. 'It was exciting the first time around because it was a show that had never been done before,' Stephen tells us about the first series. 'Sometimes these shows are formats that they've tried in other countries and have been a hit, so they know how they work. But we were inventing a brand new game, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.' So what's in store for the second outing? 'More surprises, more challenges, more epic things happening,' he promises. The host adds that if he were a player on the game, he'd be more 'ruthless' than fans might expect. To read more from our interview, click here. Before competing in the new series, Briony had already seen the first, and 'absolutely loved it'. Just like many other viewers, she watched the show assuming that it was a pretty straightforward game set in an idyllic paradise – but getting to grips with the show firsthand made both of the women realise how much harder it actually is. More Trending 'When you're in it, and you have got 101 things going on around you, it's so hard. It's a different ballgame completely,' she says, as Chelsey adds: 'It's not what we expected at all, but we loved every minute of it.' The women from Wigan would be up for returning if there was an all-stars edition, especially as they felt as though they didn't really get a chance to show themselves off fully. 'People tell us all the time we're funny,' Chelsey remarks. 'We're such a little act together, we bounce off each other, and we feel like we didn't have the time to really show that.
