Canada wildfire: Quebec sends firefighters and water bombers to aid Western Canada as wildfires force mass evacuations

Time of India01-06-2025
Quebec has stepped in to help neighbouring provinces battling severe wildfires, as flames driven by a late-May heat wave continue to spread across Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
Premier François Legault announced on Sunday(June 1) that a specialized management team will head to Alberta on Tuesday, and three sections of 20 firefighters each will join Manitoba's efforts to contain the blazes.
Two CL-415 water bombers from Quebec are already operating in Saskatchewan, while two others have been deployed to Ontario to assist where needed.

The wildfire situation
Live Events
Across the Prairies, extraordinarily hot, dry conditions have fueled more than 80 active fires. Manitoba and Saskatchewan declared states of emergency this week, and Alberta is juggling 51 fires that threaten both remote forests and oil operations.
In Manitoba alone, Premier Wab Kinew confirmed roughly 17,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as crews battle 23 active blazes in the north. In Saskatchewan, at least 4,000 residents were evacuated by May 28 as fires closed roads and crept toward small communities.
In Winnipeg, evacuees streamed into repurposed shelters and friends' homes, uncertain where they would spend the night. 'It's hard on everybody,' said Richard Korte, a school maintenance technician who fled Flin Flon with his wife and disabled son.
From a temporary emergency shelter inside a hockey arena, evacuee Chris Schultz sat in his pickup with his dog, Stella, watching for friends and relatives arriving by bus. 'I might break out crying,' he admitted, 'but Stella makes life a bit easier for some of us.'

First Nations communities in northern Manitoba have felt an acute sense of urgency as fires surround isolated reserves. Some elders and people with mobility challenges have been airlifted to safety, though heavy smoke grounded at least one charter flight.
Evacuees described frustration at long waits for bus rides and limited hotel space, prompting Indigenous leaders to call for priority accommodations in southern communities.
Support and aid
While Quebec has no active fires within its intensive protection zone and has lifted a ban on open fires in the north, Legault emphasized solidarity on
social media
. 'Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario are going through difficult times with forest fires. Premiers Scott Moe, Danielle Smith, Wab Kinew and Doug Ford can count on our help and that of SOPFEU. We are with you wholeheartedly,' he wrote, noting that Quebec's Public Safety Minister François Bonnardel is 'closely monitoring the situation here' and that recent rainfall prompted the decision to send aid .
Quebec's rapid response echoes mutual assistance calls from western premiers. 'We need to stay calm,' Kinew told reporters. 'We cannot thank other jurisdictions enough,' he said, referring to
firefighting crews
arriving from Quebec, Ontario, and the United States, which have dispatched air tankers and 150 firefighters to Manitoba.

Rain-wreck: Huge crater blocks traffic at Kapoorthala

1 2 Lucknow: Heavy rain lashed the city on Wednesday night, flooding roads and damaging infrastructure in several areas. In Aliganj, a large section of the Kapoorthala road caved in, creating a deep crater about 15x20 feet wide and nearly 15 feet deep — large enough for a truck and a car to fall into. The collapse occurred between 1 am and 2 am and was first noticed by a night security guard. Two vehicles that got stuck in the crater were removed using a crane. Officials blocked the road, forcing commuters to take long detours and causing congestion in adjoining localities. The cave-in was caused by a combination of prolonged sewer leakage and structural damage originating from a nearby optical fibre cable chamber. Multiple rounds of horizontal directional drilling for optical fibre and electrical cables created pathways for rainwater to seep into soil, weakening ground beneath bituminous road layer. There was damage to underlying water supply line and sewer line collapsed further. Continuous sewer water flow increased risk of more cave-ins and a second crater, 10 to 15 feet deep, formed beside the first, which is now around 20 to 25 feet deep. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Premium 2 & 3 BHK Apartments in Whitefield | Starts at ₹81.42 Lacs* | No Pre EMI till Possession Sowparnika Euphoria In The East Learn More Undo Aliganj resident Aman Kumar Jaiswal said water often accumulated at the spot during rains, weakening the road. "We are facing problem commuting while our business too has come to a standstill," he said. Vishal Kashyap, who works at a nearby shop, recalled that a small pothole formed at the same spot months ago but was only filled with soil. "Business will continue to suffer until repairs are done," he said. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar inspected the site with senior officials from jal kal department and Lucknow Municipal Corporation. He said repair of the damaged 1,500 mm diameter sewer line was being carried out on priority by SUEZ, a private firm hired by LMC for sewer maintenance. The area has been barricaded, and heavy machinery, including a Hydra crane and dewatering pump, deployed. At the site are 10 company workers, a supervisor and a six-member SUEZ-OCOP operations team are on site, supported by a safety emergency vehicle. SUEZ project director Rajesh Mathpal said, "Our team stabilised the area to prevent further damage." Downpour caused waterlogging in KGMU Trauma Centre, Vidhan Sabha complex and several colonies in Gomtinagar, Aashiana and Buddheswar. A small crater formed in Mahanagar by waterlogging. In Buddheswar, residents protested against clogged drains and slow pumping operations. In low-lying areas, shops and homes were flooded and heavy losses were reported. Traffic jams hit Kanpur Road and Sarojininagar, worsened by muddy, pothole-ridden stretches near expressway construction sites. In PGI's Eldeco Udyan Colony, cars were partially submerged, while Marine Drive went under knee-deep water. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Over 45mm rainfall in 24hrs, more on Indore horizon: Met

Indore: Persistent showers from Wednesday night through Thursday evening soaked Indore, marking the city's heaviest spell in weeks. The downpour brought a much-needed boost to the otherwise sluggish August monsoon, with several areas experiencing continuous heavy rain through the night and intermittent spells during the day. From Wednesday night till 5:30 pm on Thursday, the city recorded 45.1 mm of rainfall. Eastern parts of Indore saw bright sunshine in the morning, while western areas reported intense rain, causing waterlogging in low-lying pockets. The spells of heavy rain in the city on Thursday led to traffic snarls at key junctions such as Bhanwarkuan, Palasia, Robot Square, Vijay Nagar, GPO, and LIG Square. Waterlogging in low-lying stretches slowed vehicle movement, with two-wheelers particularly struggling through flooded lanes. According to the meteorological office, Thursday's maximum temperature was 27.8°C, noticeably lower than Wednesday's 30°C, and one degree below normal. The minimum was 21.5°C, also a degree lower than average. Humidity hovered between 94–95% through the day. From Wednesday late night till Thursday early morning at 8:30 am, Indore registered 31.2 mm of rain. An additional 13.9 mm on Thursday till 5:30 pm was recorded, raising the seasonal total to 341.3 mm, still 228.5 mm short of the normal average. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo The latest spell comes after 12 straight days without any significant rainfall, with no day earlier this month recording more than 2 mm. This fresh activity has revived hopes for improved monsoon performance in the coming weeks. Indore remains the lowest rainfall district in the state, followed by Barwani, Burhanpur, Khargone, and Khandwa. However, renewed monsoon systems are expected to bring substantial improvement. Senior meteorologist Dr Divya E Surendran said that a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, along with three active trough lines, is likely to strengthen over the next four days. "Heavy rainfall is expected in western Madhya Pradesh, including Indore, on Friday and Saturday. Monsoon activity has normalised, and showers will intensify across many districts," she said. The IMD has issued alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Dhar, Indore, and Dewas over the next 48 hours, with forecasts indicating the possibility of full reservoir levels in some areas within days.
