Canada wildfire: Quebec sends firefighters and water bombers to aid Western Canada as wildfires force mass evacuations

Time of India4 days ago

Quebec has stepped in to help neighbouring provinces battling severe wildfires, as flames driven by a late-May heat wave continue to spread across Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
Premier François Legault announced on Sunday(June 1) that a specialized management team will head to Alberta on Tuesday, and three sections of 20 firefighters each will join Manitoba's efforts to contain the blazes.
Two CL-415 water bombers from Quebec are already operating in Saskatchewan, while two others have been deployed to Ontario to assist where needed.

The wildfire situation
Live Events
Across the Prairies, extraordinarily hot, dry conditions have fueled more than 80 active fires. Manitoba and Saskatchewan declared states of emergency this week, and Alberta is juggling 51 fires that threaten both remote forests and oil operations.
In Manitoba alone, Premier Wab Kinew confirmed roughly 17,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as crews battle 23 active blazes in the north. In Saskatchewan, at least 4,000 residents were evacuated by May 28 as fires closed roads and crept toward small communities.
In Winnipeg, evacuees streamed into repurposed shelters and friends' homes, uncertain where they would spend the night. 'It's hard on everybody,' said Richard Korte, a school maintenance technician who fled Flin Flon with his wife and disabled son.
From a temporary emergency shelter inside a hockey arena, evacuee Chris Schultz sat in his pickup with his dog, Stella, watching for friends and relatives arriving by bus. 'I might break out crying,' he admitted, 'but Stella makes life a bit easier for some of us.'

First Nations communities in northern Manitoba have felt an acute sense of urgency as fires surround isolated reserves. Some elders and people with mobility challenges have been airlifted to safety, though heavy smoke grounded at least one charter flight.
Evacuees described frustration at long waits for bus rides and limited hotel space, prompting Indigenous leaders to call for priority accommodations in southern communities.
Support and aid
While Quebec has no active fires within its intensive protection zone and has lifted a ban on open fires in the north, Legault emphasized solidarity on
social media
. 'Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario are going through difficult times with forest fires. Premiers Scott Moe, Danielle Smith, Wab Kinew and Doug Ford can count on our help and that of SOPFEU. We are with you wholeheartedly,' he wrote, noting that Quebec's Public Safety Minister François Bonnardel is 'closely monitoring the situation here' and that recent rainfall prompted the decision to send aid .
Quebec's rapid response echoes mutual assistance calls from western premiers. 'We need to stay calm,' Kinew told reporters. 'We cannot thank other jurisdictions enough,' he said, referring to
firefighting crews
arriving from Quebec, Ontario, and the United States, which have dispatched air tankers and 150 firefighters to Manitoba.

NDMC to launch intense tree planting drive during monsoon

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to start its intensive tree planting drive in early July, coinciding with the monsoon. The initiative aims to plant 2,039 trees and roughly 4.82 lakh shrubs during the financial year throughout NDMC's jurisdiction. Officials said the 2025 targets were established following a comprehensive assessment that identified locations where trees were uprooted or damaged along avenue roads as well as areas requiring additional green cover. "While the planting will be carried out during the peak monsoon, it will continue later as well," an official said. "In July only, we aim to plant 914 saplings of indigenous trees and 9,28781 shrubs. While planting saplings at the sites of uprooted trees, we first make beds at the kuccha portion on the backside and plant multiple saplings on this stretch. Considering other trees on such patches are also old, we make sure that the new plantation is prepared by the time other trees are damaged or uprooted, and a huge space is not created," the official added. Some of the patches where planting is planned for July are Tolstoy Marg, Radial Road 1-7 and the outer circle of Connaught Place, Mandir Marg, Bhair Veer Singh Marg, Talkatora Garden, Firozshah Road, Jantar Mantar Road, Copernicus Marg, Akbar Road, Motilal Nehru Marg, Nehru Park, Malcha Marg, Commonwealth Game Park, Sanjay Jheel Park, Lodhi Road (Jor Bagh Site), Malcha Marg Colony parks and surrounding areas, Brigadier Hosiyan Singh Marg and Moti Bagh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo The horticulture department also makes a simultaneous effort to prune trees, treat damaged portions of diseased trees, and balance the canopy so that the chances of the tree falling during heavy rain decrease. "We have one tree ambulance in place, but to accelerate the work in the peak season, we have made temporary arrangements for three more trucks.... During the ongoing one week-one road drive, wherein concentrated effort is being made to develop all infra facilities on one road, we do pruning, etc. , as well," an official said. To commemorate World Environment Day and foster environmental awareness, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra planted a sapling of Lagerstroemia (Pride of India) at Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri, on Thursday. He also said that the theme for World Environment Day is Beat Plastic Pollution, and a three-day Recycle Mela at three sites — Connaught Place, Khan Market and Malcha Market was organised this week.

Hundreds of thousands in US asked to limit outdoor activities in multiple places, emergency declared in 2 states

Smokes from wildfires in Canada is spreading across multiple states in the United States including the eastern seaboard, prompting multiple states to issue air-quality alerts. The poor air quality stretching across the US came as a result of dozens of wildfires burning across Canada as the country's annual wildfire season roars into destructive fires, which have been sparked by both humans and natural causes, have prompted at least 25,000 residents in three Canadian provinces to evacuate in recent days. Canadian wildfires have prompted authorities to issue air-quality alerts across large swathes across the United States as the smoke is expected to impact multiple states. Health officials have issued a dire warning that deteriorating air quality poses health risk to the public, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and those with preexisting conditions, NewsWeek reports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Two people have lost their lives and tens of thousands have been evacuated as a result of the blazes in Canada, reports suggest. The National Weather Service (NWS) has published alerts for parts of Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Arizona. Smoke from the wildfires is expected to raise levels of fine particulate matter in the air, prompting multiple air-quality alerts. Many of the air-quality alerts were in effect through Thursday, though some extended into Friday. Some advisories suggest ways to help reduce air pollution, including walking or biking instead of driving, carpooling, using public transportation, and avoiding drive-through services. According to CBS News, more than 33,000 people have been evacuated across three Canadian provinces due to the fires. Some 15,000 people had been evacuated in Saskatchewan as of Tuesday, with 1,400 ordered to evacuate in Alberta, the report said. The National Weather Service said on X, Friday: "Poor air quality can be hazardous to anyone. Before spending time outdoors, check the air quality forecast to ensure that you aren't doing yourself more harm than good." State of emergencies had already been declared in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew describing efforts in his province as "the largest wildfire evacuation in recent memory." "Their trajectory can be deviated so they don't actually achieve their maximum lung function." There are also "very clear links" between inhaling particles and earlier death from both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, Grigg said. Grigg added that conditions such as asthma are also exacerbated by exposure to air pollution.

Rains come & go, but roads remain a mess

Chennai: For Chennai, the longest stretch of four-five dry months begins in Jan-Feb, after the northeast monsoon. This is the ideal period to complete all outdoor civic work, especially the laying and relaying of roads battered by the rains. And Greater Chennai Corporation has missed this entire window period this year without identifying roads, auctioning works and awarding contracts. Result: Chennai's roads both in core and extended areas continue to remain battered and neglected, endangering the lives and limbs of daily commuters and residents. Major bus routes and interior lanes, many of which suffered extensive damage due to waterlogging and poor drainage during the rains, are yet to be relaid. The delay in road restoration has led to increased traffic congestion, vehicular damage, and safety hazards for both motorists and pedestrians. Areas such as T Nagar, Velachery, and parts of north Chennai report large potholes, eroded asphalt, and uneven surfaces that have worsened due to the summer heat. Commuters say travel time has doubled in some locations because of damaged roads and diversions. In several extended zones including Ernavoor, Manali, Sholinganallur, and Ambattur residents report that the temporary patchwork done after the rains has not held up, turning already fragile roads into dangerous traps for two-wheelers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo GCC is blaming the delays on the administrative process. Now that the city has already experienced pre-monsoon showers, even if roads are relaid in the coming days, they are unlikely to last long. G Uma Devi, a retired Professor of Civil Engineering at Anna University, said, "The quality of construction is the major issue. If relaying is done properly, roads need not be redone every year, yet we find ourselves doing just that. The concerned department should hold contractors accountable and require them to offer a warranty of at least five to ten years. There should be a Road Safety Audit for Corporation roads, similar to what exists for state highways. " In Chennai, newly constructed roads have a minimum warranty of three years when built using capital and other funds. Roads built under the Chennai Mega City Development Project enjoy a five-year warranty. This defect liability period ensures that contractors are responsible for repairs during this timeframe. "The authorities focus only on relaying major bus route roads. For instance, when the chief minister recently visited north Chennai to inaugurate the tuna fishing harbour, the corporation re-laid only the main roads, leaving interior roads neglected for over a decade. Though underground sewage facilities were provided after our area was added to GCC limits, roads were never relaid," said B Niranjan Patnaik, president of the Kamarajar Nagar Residents' Welfare Association in Ernavoor. Similarly, an interior road in Madipakkam has gone without repair for 20 years, despite nine nearby roads being repaired in that time. The corporation has completed its tender process and is set to commence re-laying 3,980 roads at a length of 650.90km at a cost of 489.25 crore. Post northeast monsoon, the civic body has carried out only patch work. When contacted, GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran told TOI: "Typically, road relaying work begins in May. However, this year, due to administrative delays and an appraisal by TUFIDCO to check if the same roads were being relaid again, the process was postponed. Work will commence in June. Milling work has started, and relaying will be completed by the end of Aug."
