Lucknow: The city recorded highest single-day rainfall of Aug in eight years between 8.30am on Wednesday and 8.30am Thursday. Earlier, 161.8mm rainfall was recorded on Aug 28 in 2017.
Total rainfall recorded at the Met observatory in Amausi during this period was 120mm. The bulk of the rainfall (117.3mm) was between 8.30pm Wednesday and 8.30am Thursday. Light to moderate showers may occur in the coming days.
The city has received good rainfall in Aug so far. As a result, rain score that was 25% below normal till July 31, climbed 44% points to 19% above normal Thursday. Total rainfall in the city in monsoon season so far from Jun 1 till Thursday was 499.1mm against the normal of 417.9mm set for the period.
Earlier, the city had recorded 91.3mm rainfall on Aug 5 this year.
Heavy rainfall was also reported from other parts of east UP, terai belt and Rohilkhand from Wednesday till Thursday. Unnao recorded the highest (150mm), followed by Bareilly (140mm) and 120mm each in Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Barabanki and Lucknow. Agra recorded 110m and Sitapur 100mm.

A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal led to moisture incursion in the state's atmosphere. The three factors led to widespread rainfall in many parts of the state on Wednesday-Thursday," said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at state Met department.
"However, monsoon trough line, a stream of small cyclonic circulations caused due to low pressure, has now moved over Central India. As a result, rainfall activity will slow down in state. Yet, light to moderate showers may occur in some parts of the state over the next few days," he predicted.
