9 ways to celebrate Mardi Gras in Central Texas: parades, live music, drink deals

Yahoo27-02-2025

Forget the French Quarter, y'all. This year, Central Texas is throwing a Mardi Gras bash that's less beads-in-your-face tourism and more like your weird uncle's backyard barbecue — but with gumbo and a brass band that might actually know what they're doing. From crawfish boils in dive bars to drag brunches that'll make your wig spin, the city's serving up a spicy slice of Louisiana, Texas-style.
Kitty Cohen's is doing their last free crawfish boil of the season on March 1. They're opening at 11 a.m. with beer and frozen hurricanes, calling it a pre-Mardi Gras party. It's just their usual crawfish boil, but the last one for a while.

This Mardi Gras bar crawl on March 1 turns Austin into a New Orleans-style party. Participants get beads, a color-changing cup and a mask (for the first 100 people), along with no cover and drink specials at participating bars. Registration is from 3 to 5 p.m. at The Blind Pig Pub, where you'll get your gear. After that, you can visit any of the participating bars at your own pace. Participating bars include the Bling Pig, Burnside's Tavern, Dizzy Rooster, The Lodge, Peckerheads and Thirsty's. Remember to bring your ID. You can find more information here.
Sahara Lounge is hosting a Mardi Gras party with a global twist. Starting at 7 p.m., they'll have their regular Africa Night Buffet with both vegan and meat options, accompanied by Mafaro Marimba. Later in the evening, Continental Drift takes the stage at 9 p.m., followed by the Sahara Allstars at 11 p.m. Entry is $12 cash or $14 card at the door, and they'll have free beads while supplies last. You can also save a spot ahead of the event here.

The annual San Marcos Mardi Gras parade, hosted by the Mistick Krewe of Okeanos, transforms the historic downtown area into a celebration. "Okeanos salutes all things San Marcos" is this year's chosen theme. Beginning at noon at Jack's Roadhouse (1625 Hopkins St.), the parade features colorful floats, music and a festive atmosphere, all while adhering to strict guidelines ensuring a family-friendly and safe event. Notably, the parade maintains a non-political stance, welcoming all participants, including pets on leashes. You can sign up for the parade here.
Aaron Franklin's Uptown Sports Club is throwing a four-day Mardi Gras bash with New Orleans-inspired food and drinks. Expect special menu items like brisket gumbo, oyster po'boys and beignets, along with themed cocktails in souvenir cups. The bar will be decked out in Mardi Gras decorations, and the patio is now enclosed for better comfort. They're aiming for a fun, neighborhood party vibe, celebrating the building's long history and its current role as a spot for Louisiana-influenced Texas food and drinks. The celebration runs from March 1 to 4, with varying hours.

Meanwhile Brewing Co. is throwing a Mardi Gras bash on March 2 featuring Big Wy's Brass Band, who will perform from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The event includes free live music, beer and New Orleans-inspired food specials from their food trucks. Distant Relatives will serve Texas BBQ Gumbo, Songbird offers Shrimp Poboys and Bésame has King Cake Ice Cream. They'll also have celebratory drinks available in the taproom. The event encourages early arrival to secure seating near the stage or dance floor.

Volstead's is hosting a free, 21+ Mardi Gras themed drag brunch on March 2 on the Hotel Vegas & Volstead Patio starting at 1 p.m. Hosted by May Magdalene, Mars and Veronica Valentine, with special guest Harlót, the event features performances, music by DJ Boyfriend, and brunch from El Borracho Tacos. Doors open at noon. You can make reservations here.

Scholz Garten is having their usual Fat Tuesday crawfish boil on March 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. They'll have crawfish, some New Orleans food like po'boys and gumbo, big king cake pretzels, live brass band music, and Abita beer and hurricane drink specials.

Street Food Summer Is Here

The best things to eat from trucks, stands, and carts all summer long Street food is one of the essential joys of summer. After months spent hiding from the elements inside temperature-controlled restaurants, there's nothing like sitting in the sunshine with barbecue from one of Austin's most exciting food trucks, digging into a cream cheese-slathered Seattle-style hot dog outside the Mariners game, or cooling off with one of New Orleans's quintessential sno-balls. Across the country, chefs are setting up stands and firing up sidewalk grills to serve street foods both classic and groundbreaking. There's a lot to eat out there this summer. Get to it. — Nicholas Mancall-Bitel, Eater travel editor Map Apr 28 Eater New Orleans The Finest Food Trucks in Austin Austin's food destinations that just happen to be on wheels serve top-notch barbecue, pizza, kolaches, and so much more

Addressed: A Guide to Layering Jewelry

Welcome to Addressed, a weekly column where we, ahem, address the joys (and tribulations!) of getting dressed. So far we've unpacked how to wear shorts at the office and beyond, how to pack a carry-on bag for a work trip, how to dress with style in your third trimester, and even how to layer without looking like that chair in your room (you know the one). Download the Vogue app and find our Style Advice section to submit your question. It seems jewelry is on everyone's mind at the moment. On the Vogue app, two users posed jewelry-related questions: MalinaMendez1 asked: Is there such a thing as too many accessories? When does it become tacky? and queried: Are mixed metals seen as tacky or can they pair nicely with one another? The latter question came up again at the office, when a colleague inquired about mixing gold and silver, and yet another wanted advice on stacking. So this week we're going all-in on piling up the jewels. First, is there such a thing as wearing too many accessories? The answer is no; what there is is a personal limit to wearing accessories. Some people can do statement earrings, necklaces galore, oodles of bangles, and stacked rings, and look absolutely fabulous in their maximalism—think of someone like the stylist Catherine Baba, who easily pairs oversized tassel earrings with armfuls of bangles, a bold pendant necklace, and even a jaunty hat. Now, we are not all Catherine Baba, but the point is there is no limit to self-expression. The trick is finding what your own limit is. Catherine Baba in Paris, 2011. Foc Kan Baba in a delightful necklace and belt combo, 2012. PascalUsually, the trick is to pick one or two things to highlight—the more separated from each other the better; meaning statement earrings and lots of bangles work, but statement earrings and a statement necklace might be harder to pull off. This is jewelry designer Jennifer Fisher's approach: 'When it comes to layered jewelry, I like to choose either my ears or my neck—rarely both, unless I'm wearing fine jewelry. If I'm wearing statement hoops, I'll skip a necklace but might stack rings or wear a cuff on one wrist, or both.' Ears are also a place to indulge a bit of maximalism in a subtle way—I have two piercings on my left ear and one on my right (the second one just never took), and I like to experiment by doubling-up earrings on my left ear; wearing matching hoop earrings or drop earrings of different lengths, leaving the right ear with a simple stud or huggy. Juxtaposition—a favorite word of designers and fashion writers alike—is what it's all about. If you go bold in one place, pull back on the other. When it comes to stacking, bracelets, necklaces, and rings all have their own rules. I love the look of multiple rings worn on one finger, but every time I've tried it myself it feels uncomfortable and try-hard. A former coworker wore a jumble of gold chains and she inspired me to do the same—I wear three every day, each one a different length and each with a small charm (with a very personal significance), and I never take them off. Sometimes I'll add a more 'fashion' necklace—a short pearl necklace, or something funkier like silver ball chains, both a 'choker' length. If I'm wearing something that is more of a statement, I'll take the chains off. Stacked bracelets I also love—I mean is there anything chicer than a wrist with a few Cartier Love bracelets? Aspirational! Cartier or not, if you keep them all roughly the same width then you can play with materials and, yes, types of metal. Mixed metal stacks from Jennifer Fisher. Photo: Courtesy of Jennifer Fisher Ears can be a whole ecosystem unto themselves to stack and experiment with, like these styles from Justine Clenquet. Photo: Leo Arnaud / Courtesy of Justine Clenquet You really can mix metals of any kind—it's a groovy look! In fact, designers like Fisher and Justine Clenquet are making pieces that incorporate both gold and silver. 'I love a stacked chain bracelet that combines different finishes,' Fisher added. 'You can even pair a gold signet ring—maybe a fine jewelry piece—next to your engagement ring, even if it's white gold.'
