Nagpur: Nagpur, Amravati and Akola headlined the performance of Vidarbha under the Centre's 'One District One Product' (ODOP) 2024 initiative, awards for which were presented in New Delhi on Monday.
Nagpur bagged the silver medal in Category A - Agriculture for excellence in orange processing while Amravati won the bronze medal in same category for Madarin Orange. Akola secured Special Mention award in non-agriculture category for innovation and industrial progress in the cotton ginning and pressing sector.
Overall, Maharashtra clinched the gold medal in category A for outstanding achievements in promoting both agricultural and non-agricultural products across its districts.
The awards were presented during a ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in the presence of Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, and Union minister of state Jitin Prasada.
Vinayak Mahamuni, CEO of Zilla Parishad, received the award on behalf of the Nagpur district administration. District collector Vipin Itankar credited the achievement to the combined efforts of the administration, principal secretary Harshdeep Kamble, and the leadership of Anbalagan Sir.

Akola emerged as the only district from Maharashtra to be honoured under the non-agricultural category, thanks to its consistent industrial growth in the cotton sector. The award was received by Santosh Bansod, general manager of the District Industries Centre. "This gives our cotton national identity and boosts opportunities for local entrepreneurs," district collector Ajit Kumbhar said.
A key driver of Akola's success is the Sangha Cluster in Borgaon Manju, comprising 103 members and supported under state and central schemes. The region now hosts over 100 ginning and pressing units, along with upcoming yarn and garment units.
Other ODOP 2024 highlights from Maharashtra include dRatnagiri (gold – Alphonso Mango), and Nashik (special mention – Grapes and Raisins).

Centre considering climate-friendly sectors as it looks to broaden capex in FY27

New Delhi: The Union government is considering expanding the scope of its capital expenditure (capex) in FY27 beyond traditional infrastructure to include emerging, climate-friendly sectors such as renewable energy and green technologies, two people aware of the matter said. Senior finance ministry officials will meet their counterparts across key ministries in the coming weeks and months to identify investment opportunities in sectors that are both future-ready and growth-supportive. 'The government is keen to sustain the growth momentum through targeted public investment, especially as private sector capex remains uneven," the first person mentioned above said, requesting anonymity. The person added that broadening the capex could also help align long-term development goals with sustainability imperatives. Meanwhile, for FY27, the government is likely to maintain its public capex at about 3.1% of GDP, similar to FY26, continuing its emphasis on capital spending as a key driver of economic expansion, the second person said, also requesting anonymity. "It's not just about boosting short-term growth, but about investing in the kind of infrastructure that will define the country's development over the next decades," the person mentioned above added. The government aims to sustain economic momentum through strong public investment in infrastructure at a time when private sector capex remains tentative and uneven. On 30 June, Mint reported that capital spending by large central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) and key infrastructure agencies could exceed ₹8.5 trillion in FY26, the highest in about a decade, following a renewed government push to accelerate investments this fiscal year. When combined with investments by infrastructure-focussed agencies such as the highways and power ministries, total public capex has more than doubled, from ₹3.11 trillion in FY16 to ₹8.07 trillion in FY25, according to data from the Department of Public Enterprises, under the finance ministry. The Union budget for FY26 earmarked ₹11.21 trillion for central capital expenditure, about 3.1% of GDP and nearly 10% higher than the revised estimates for FY25. This includes ₹1.5 trillion in 50-year interest-free loans to states, aimed at sustaining infrastructure momentum and driving economic growth. The central government, in its Economic Survey 2024-25, projected India's real GDP growth for FY26 to be between6.3% and 6.8%. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also expects India's FY26 GDP growth forecast at6.5%. With GDP growth likely to meet its target, the Centre will need to raise capex for maintaining a similar nominal GDP growth target for the next fiscal year, with public capex expected at around 3.1% of GDP. A finance ministry spokesperson didn't respond to emailed queries. Experts believe the Centre's strategy to maintain capital expenditure at about 3% of GDP, while making directional shifts towards future-ready sectors, is a step in the right direction. "Directional shifts are also called for as the need for expanding conventional infrastructure like roads and ports would be fulfilled in the near future and given the changing scope of new technologies, public investment would be called for linking of rivers, emphasis on renewable energy including hydro power, space, exploitation of rare earth minerals and artificial intelligence-related infrastructure," said D.K. Srivastava, chief policy advisor at EY. Srivastava said central capex is expected to remain crucial over the medium to long term and should ideally be financed under the golden rule, allocating all central borrowing towards capital creation, with additional support from non-debt capital receipts. "Central capex should focus on both maximizing its multiplier effects and filling up shortfalls in new areas of infrastructure, including production of defense capital assets, where private sector investment may not be able to fill up the gap," he added. Rishi Shah, partner and economic advisory services leader, Grant Thornton Bharat, said the pivot toward climate-friendly capex is economically astute—research shows green spending multipliers are larger than traditional spending. "This reallocation optimizes public capital efficiency through higher domestic content and labour intensity," he said. "Given India's $400-billion renewable financing requirement by 2030, strategic government leadership can catalyze private investment through demonstration effects and de-risking," he added.

Market timing has little impact on SIP returns: Motilal Oswal MF study

Mumbai: Timing matters a lot when you're batting - like finding the sweet spot on the bat. In mutual fund investing, it might matter a lot less. A study by Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund shows that investors who started SIPs at market peaks and those who began at market bottoms ended up with nearly identical long-term returns. The first period examined in the study was from 2000 to 2005, a time marked by the aftermath of the global bubble burst and the Indian market's subsequent recovery - a phase of high volatility. During this period, the Nifty 500 Index 's price-to-earnings (PE) ratio swung sharply, peaking at 37.26 on February 24, 2000, and bottoming out at 11.58 on September 21, 2001. An investor who began investing in February 2000 earned a CAGR of 15.47%, while one who started at the lower valuation in September 2001 earned 15.55%, according to the study. Similarly, between 2006 and 2010, the stock market went on a rollercoaster ride - surging during a roaring bull run, plunging during the global financial crisis, and eventually staging a recovery. An investor who started a SIP on January 4, 2008, when the Nifty 500 PE was 27.07, earned a return of 13.97%, while one who began investing when the Nifty 500 PE had dropped to 9.29 on October 27, 2008, earned a return of 14.36%. Live Events 'Systematic investment plans go through an entire business cycle seeing ups and downs. This volatility over longer terms averages out returns,' says Nikhil Gupta, founder of Sage Capital. Between 2011 and 2015, the stock market witnessed a volatile period. Equities were under pressure till mid-2013 after India was famously lumped together as part of 'Fragile Five'— a term used to describe emerging market economies that were vulnerable to capital flight risks. Subsequently, stocks rebounded on indications that the Narendra Modi-led BJP is coming to power. A SIP started on August 19, 2015, when the Nifty 500 PE was 25.79, returned 15.26%, compared with a SIP started on August 28, 2013, at a PE of 15.11, which returned 14.89%. 'Consistent long-term investing through SIPs have shown effectiveness regardless of where the market stands during the time of investing,' said Oswal.
