Such hotels are permitted to serve alcohol to their guests through room service, reflecting a balance between tradition and hospitality services. The excise department emphasised that this exemption is strictly limited to these licensed hotels and does not extend to other establishments.

India facing tough choices against US tariffs, has limited options; says expert, adds, 'US will be forced to...'
New Delhi: The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), the economic think tank, said on Friday, 15 August, that India is facing tough choices in responding to heavy tariffs from the USA. What did the GTRI say about US tariffs? The GTRI said that whether it is to negotiate with the US regarding tariffs or to retaliate, diversify export markets or give trade concessions like stopping Russian oil imports, each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. The GTRI said that India is celebrating its Independence Day this year under the shadow of a serious trade confrontation with the USA. Why is India in a strategic dilemma? The Trump administration's decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on most Indian goods, in addition to the existing Most Favored Nation (MFN) duty, has put India in a strategic dilemma. This could reshape its trade, energy and diplomatic position. What are the options for India? GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said, 'New Delhi has limited options. These include negotiations, retaliation, diversification of markets or stopping the purchase of Russian oil for tariff relief. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.' He further said that India will need structural reforms and aggressive trade diplomacy to withstand high tariffs and diversify exports to Europe, ASEAN, Africa, West Asia and South America. How much loss will be compensated? He said that the gains in the first two years will only be able to compensate for $10-15 billion of the $50 billion loss. If US tariffs increase consumer prices and unemployment in the US, domestic political pressure may force the Trump administration to cut tariffs by about 15 per cent for all countries. What can India do to raise awareness about tariffs? 'India's best role here is to quietly highlight the cost of tariffs to the American voters,' Srivastava said. He further said that in an era when economic power is being used as a weapon, survival does not mean avoiding confrontation. He said, 'It is about choosing the right battles, anticipating the next move and playing for long-term victory.'

ECB's rebel voice bows out with plea for transparency
The European Central Bank 's most rebellious rate-setter has one last suggestion before he departs this month: more transparency on policy decisions. Arch hawk Robert Holzmann , who's been comfortable delivering a lone 'no' vote on occasions during the ECB 's easing push, wants outsiders to glean more of an understanding of officials' thinking as they calibrate borrowing costs. He'd like to see a version of the Federal Reserve's dot plot, under which policymakers anonymously provide their projections for rates. Alternatively, views diverging from the narrative presented by President Christine Lagarde could be summarized and released. "When we start out, unanimity is a strong signal," Holzmann said in an interview before he cedes control of Austrian's central bank to former Economy Minister Martin Kocher. "But if the situation is not as clear in what direction you need to move because there are arguments in all directions, then I think deviations have information for the market." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The #1 Mistake Tinnitus Sufferers Make Every Night (I Did It for Years) Derila Ergo Undo The parting advice caps a six-year stint for Holzmann at the ECB, where the 76-year-old was among the staunchest supporters of the unprecedented ramp-up in rates unleashed to tame the euro zone's sharpest-ever spike in prices. With inflation returning toward the 2% target, Holzmann didn't back a June reduction that brought borrowing costs to the same level. He's also questioned other moves during the cutting campaign. Live Events But while Lagarde singled him out at a press conference this year for failing to fall in line with the rest of the 26-member Governing Council, Holzmann says he's never had any conflict with the ECB chief and speaks highly of her work. His plea to boost transparency came at a farewell dinner last month in Frankfurt, when asked by Lagarde for his thoughts on how the ECB could operate more effectively. The idea will probably remain just that, however, as a yearlong strategy review wrapped up only recently.
