Heavy rainfall in Nashik leads to swelling of Godavari
Nashik: After a break of nearly three weeks, heavy rainfall returned to Nashik on Tuesday night and continued throughout Wednesday. This caused the Godavari river to rise significantly, reaching the chest of the Dutondya Maruti idol for the third time this season. The Dutondya Maruti idol is a local landmark that acts as a measure for the river's flood level. Its partial submersion, as seen on Wednesday, indicates a flooding situation. The water had previously reached this level on July 5 and June 19. Over a 24-hour period — between Tuesday and Wednesday — the Nashik city recorded 66.4mm of rainfall. Owing to the continuous rainfall, 500 cusecs discharge from the Gangapur dam started on Wednesday at 8m. But by evening the discharge increased to 7,372 cusecs. The discharge at the weir near Ahilyabai Holkar bridge near Ramkund in Godavari river also increased from 644 cusecs at 8am to 10,854 cusecs by Wednesday evening. Several small temples on the riverbed were inundated after the water level of the Godavari river increased. The rainfall also led to waterlogging in various parts of the city, slowing down movement of vehicles and causing traffic jams in some areas of Nashik city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The fire brigade department of the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) sounded a flood alert for residents in the low-lying areas near the Godavari, advising them to move to safer locations. After almost three days of school holidays, post the long Independence Day weekend, and with heavy rainfall still predicted for Maharashtra districts such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Navi Mumbai on Thursday, the normal routine is likely to remain disrupted for another day. The schools in most districts will remain open on Thursday, August 21. There have been no official announcements for a holiday in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, or Thane yet. However, the Lonavala Municipal Council has announced a holiday for all schools tomorrow following heavy rains. The order applies to all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools within the council limits, across every management and medium of instruction. Officials said the step was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety, considering the continuous heavy rains in Lonavala and the surrounding areas. Despite an alert for heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the rainfall intensity is expected to ease from Thursday. The weather agency said the rainfall activity is likely to reduce over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra from today onwards with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over north Konkan, including Mumbai, and isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (≥21 cm) over North Madhya Maharashtra on 20th and isolated heavy rainfall over the region during the next 3 days. However, light to moderate rainfall is still predicted for most/many places very likely over the region during the next 7 days. According to the weather department's weekly forecast, Mumbai will receive heavy rainfall until Thursday, 21 August. However, the rainfall is expected to continue throughout the week. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Mumbai is receiving heavy rainfall due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and the strengthening of monsoon winds.

U'khand sees 30% surge in disaster toll, deadliest in recent yrs
Dehradun: Uttarakhand has seen an over 30% rise in disaster-related casualties this year, making 2025 the deadliest in recent years even as the monsoon is far from over, according to data from the state emergency operation centre (SEOC). So far, 239 people have been affected—61 confirmed dead, 84 missing, and 94 injured. The toll has already surpassed last year's 110 casualties (82 dead and 28 missing) and exceeded the figures from 2023, when nearly 100 lives were lost in weather-related incidents. The figures are now approaching those of 2021, when 298 people died and over 50 went missing in natural calamities. That year, a flash flood in Chamoli, triggered by a rock-ice avalanche, killed 204, making it the second-worst disaster after the 2013 Kedarnath tragedy, when thousands perished. Experts warn that while the Himalayan terrain makes the state inherently disaster-prone, the rising scale of loss underscores shortcomings in planning and preparedness. "Landslides, cloudbursts and other heavy rain-linked disasters will continue in the hills due to the topography. What is important is whether we are learning from these incidents and adopting mitigation measures to minimise human loss," said disaster adaptation expert and former Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) executive director Piyoosh Rautela. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo One of this year's worst calamities was the Aug 5 flash flood in Dharali, a village near the Gangotri highway in Uttarkashi. Triggered by an extreme weather event in the upper catchment, it destroyed homes, fields and infrastructure. Official records confirm one death, but around 68 remain missing, including 25 Nepali workers who were engaged in local projects. Rescue efforts have been hampered by huge boulders, unstable slopes and a temporary lake in Harsil that continues to pose risks of breaching. Calling Dharali a "classic example" of misplaced habitation, Rautela stressed the need to enforce a flood zonation plan in "true letter and spirit" to prevent such tragedies. With the monsoon still underway, officials fear the toll could climb further, accentuating the urgency for stronger disaster management in the Himalayan state.
