Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah distributes 500th crore ticket under Shakti scheme
Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar distributed tickets to women passengers on the bus near Windsor Manor Bridge in Bengaluru.
On this occasion, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, and several other dignitaries were present.
Five guarantee schemes were announced during the 2023 Assembly election. The Shakti Yojana was launched on June 11 as per the decision taken in the Cabinet to implement it immediately after the government came into existence on May 20, 2023. The Chief Minister explained that since then, women in the state have been provided free travel facilities in government buses.
Speaking to the reporters, Siddaramaiah also said that he, his cabinet colleagues, and Congress MLAs will not participate in the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Kalasavalli-Ambargondlu Bridge, which is scheduled to take place later today. He said that it was a mark of protest as his request to postpone the event at Sagar taluk in Shivamogga district was not accepted by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
'I had called Nitin Gadkari and asked him to postpone the program. He said he would postpone it. But now, bowing to the pressure from local BJP leaders, they are going ahead with the event,' Siddaramaiah told reporters.
'But here, protocol has been violated. As a mark of protest, none of us is participating in the program. Congress MLAs from the region, the District Minister, and the Minister for Public Works are all staying away. They are deliberately creating a rift between the central and state governments,' he added.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Surdeep Singh Surjewala accused the Centre of insulting the Chief Minister and the people of the State.
'Insulting the people of Karnataka and Kanadigas has become a habit of the BJP. This is not just an insult to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, but to the seven crore people of Karnataka,' Surjewala told ANI.
'BJP thinks of Karnataka as just a money-making machine. They take one rupee in the form of GST and give us back only 13 paise. They do not give us Rs 5300 crore for the Upper Bhadra project. They don't clear the Krishna Water Tribunal,' he added. (ANI)

Tamil Nadu launches welfare schemes for sanitation workers amid privatisation row
The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced six new welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of sanitation workers, following protests against the proposed privatisation of their jobs. The announcement came from Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu after a Cabinet workers had been protesting outside Rippon Building for 13 days and were detained by police following Madras High Court instructions. Though no decision has yet been made regarding their demand to halt job privatisation, Minister Thennarasu said the Cabinet approved six special schemes to benefit schemes reflect Chief Minister MK Stalin's special interest in sanitation workers' welfare,' he said. Key initiatives include treatment for skin diseases common among sanitation workers, additional insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh, raising the total death benefit to Rs 10 lakh, and a 33 per cent financial subsidy up to Rs 3.5 lakh for workers or their families to start businesses, along with a 6 per cent interest discount for timely payments. A total of Rs 10 crore has been allocated for this measures include a Higher Education Assistance Scheme to support children of sanitation workers with tuition, hostel, and book fees; construction of 30,000 residences over three years for urban workers; preference in the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme for rural workers; and free morning meals in Chennai for workers starting early Thennarasu urged sanitation workers to return to work, emphasising that the government is committed to their Minister MK Stalin, on X, praised sanitation workers for their tireless work 'at midnight, during storms, rain, and floods' and reaffirmed his government's commitment to their dignity. Partition Horrors Remembrance Day observed by ABVP in Kerala college, leads to clashes with SFI
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar's directive to universities in the State to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14 led the RSS-affiliated student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to mark the occasion at a college in Kasaragod on Thursday, triggering clashes with the CPI(M)-backed Students Federation of India (SFI). The ABVP observed the day by putting up posters about it at a government college, following which SFI activists turned up in bigger numbers to oppose it. Both groups clashed with each other, and the posters put up by the ABVP were torn down, according to visuals shown on TV channels. The police intervened to stop the clashes between the two groups. The SFI also burned an effigy of the Governor outside the college campus. Later, the ABVP students again put up the posters on the college notice board, leading to activists of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF) turning up to oppose the move. The activists of MSF, the student outfit of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), shouted slogans against the occasion and the Governor, as the police acted as a barrier between them and the ABVP members near the notice board. On Thursday, ABVP activists observed the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day at the Kerala Central University, the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD) college at Kumbala here, the Kasaragod Government College and the Chendayad MG College in Kannur, the student outfit said in a statement. Mr. Arlekar had recently issued a circular for the observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in State universities on August 14 on the instructions from the Union Home Ministry, according to Raj Bhavan. The Governor, as Chancellor of universities in the State, had issued the directive to the Vice Chancellors to organise seminars to commemorate the day and to forward the action plans regarding this. Opposing the directive, the Left government had made it clear that such programmes need not be held in the universities. The Congress-led UDF Opposition had said it would not allow any such programme to be implemented in the State. Both the Left and the UDF had alleged that the Governor's directive was an attempt to divide the people and the nation.
