Clemson football legend reportedly retiring from NFL

A Clemson football legend is retiring after eight seasons in the NFL. Former Tigers wide receiver Mike Williams is hanging up his cleats after an NFL career spent primarily with the Los Angeles Chargers. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news, which the Chargers seemed to confirm shortly afterwards in a message of thanks posted to the team's official social media accounts. Williams helped Clemson to its first national championship in 25 years in January 2017 with a monstrous performance against Alabama in that year's title game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Williams had eight catches for 94 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers' 35-31 victory over Nick Saban's Crimson Tide. His fourth quarter included a four-yard touchdown catch from Deshaun Watson with 14 minutes to play that pulled Clemson to within three at 24-21, and a 26-yard catch with 5:19 left as the Tigers drove for the go-ahead score. On the game-winning drive of a frantic fourth quarter, Williams' one-handed 24-yard catch over Anthony Averett moved Clemson into Alabama territory, and he drew a critical pass interference call on Averett that set the Tigers up with first-and-goal at the 2-yard line with 6 seconds left. Watson then hit Hunter Renfrow for the game-winner ('Orange Crush') with 1 second left on the clock. Over his eight seasons in the NFL, Williams caught 330 passes for 5,104 receiving yards (15.5 AVG) and 32 touchdowns, most of them with the Chargers. He spent last season between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, finishing with 21 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown. Williams ranks fourth in all-time receiving yards in Clemson history with 2,727 yards behind Sammy Watkins' 3,391, Deandre Hopkins' 3,020, and Aaron Kelly (2,733). He also ranks second in school history in receiving touchdowns (21) and seventh in total receptions (177). Williams was the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. PFF ranks Clemson with a Top 3 defense as the Tigers' defense looks to return to form

The outlook for Clemson football's defense in 2025 is sky-high as the Tigers enter the season loaded with future pros and energized by key coaching changes. Pro Football Focus has Clemson's defense ranked No. 3 in the country, complementing what they rate as the No. 1 offense nationally. PFF's Max Chadwick pointed to the defensive line as the strength of the unit, anchored by projected 2026 NFL Draft stars Peter Woods and T.J. Parker. 'The Tigers boast the best defensive line in college football,' Chadwick wrote. 'They're both top-10 players in the nation and project as the best prospects at their respective positions in the 2026 NFL Draft.' PFF also ranks Clemson's secondary fourth overall and its linebacker corps inside the top 10, giving new defensive coordinator Tom Allen a deep and talented unit to work with. Allen replaces Wes Goodwin after Clemson's defense struggled last season, ranking just 69th in yards allowed and 49th in points allowed per game. The Tigers were 29th in ESPN's SP+ defensive ratings a year ago, continuing a slide from the top-tier marks they posted under Brent Venables, who last had the unit ranked third nationally in 2021. Clemson joins several other national powers that landed in PFF's top 10 on both sides of the ball, including Alabama, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Oregon.

SEC coaches and players defend their dominance amid Big Ten's recent success

ATLANTA — There was not a Big Ten player, coach or fan was in sight this week as the College Football Hall of Fame hosted SEC Media Days . Still, the SEC's No. 1 rival found its way into conversations all week long. It's no secret the rivalry has intensified in recent years. Over the last decade, the SEC has won six of the 10 national championships. Two were won by Clemson in that stretch but the last two were won by Big Ten rivals, Michigan last year and Ohio State in January.
