Clemson football legend reportedly retiring from NFL

Yahoo18-07-2025
A Clemson football legend is retiring after eight seasons in the NFL.
Former Tigers wide receiver Mike Williams is hanging up his cleats after an NFL career spent primarily with the Los Angeles Chargers. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news, which the Chargers seemed to confirm shortly afterwards in a message of thanks posted to the team's official social media accounts.
Williams helped Clemson to its first national championship in 25 years in January 2017 with a monstrous performance against Alabama in that year's title game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
Williams had eight catches for 94 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers' 35-31 victory over Nick Saban's Crimson Tide. His fourth quarter included a four-yard touchdown catch from Deshaun Watson with 14 minutes to play that pulled Clemson to within three at 24-21, and a 26-yard catch with 5:19 left as the Tigers drove for the go-ahead score.
On the game-winning drive of a frantic fourth quarter, Williams' one-handed 24-yard catch over Anthony Averett moved Clemson into Alabama territory, and he drew a critical pass interference call on Averett that set the Tigers up with first-and-goal at the 2-yard line with 6 seconds left.
Watson then hit Hunter Renfrow for the game-winner ('Orange Crush') with 1 second left on the clock.
Over his eight seasons in the NFL, Williams caught 330 passes for 5,104 receiving yards (15.5 AVG) and 32 touchdowns, most of them with the Chargers. He spent last season between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, finishing with 21 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown.
Williams ranks fourth in all-time receiving yards in Clemson history with 2,727 yards behind Sammy Watkins' 3,391, Deandre Hopkins' 3,020, and Aaron Kelly (2,733). He also ranks second in school history in receiving touchdowns (21) and seventh in total receptions (177).
Williams was the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

3 observations from Day 9 of Buffalo Bills training camp

Buffalo Bills 2025 NFL training camp is rolling on and will be watched under a microscope each and every day. Throughout practices, updates are shared during the workouts which make for intriguing and important notes. In terms of Day 9 of training camp, what stood out the most? Here are three observations from the ninth day of Bills training camp: James Cook is out The big news on Sunday was running back James Cook finally sitting out a practice as he looks for a new contract from the Bills. He has previously worked out at every practice, but was on the sideline on Day 9. When asked about why he sat out, Cook reportedly just said one word: "business." Wide receiver a concern During the Bills' Friday practice, wide receiver Khalil Shakir was injured. Turns out he will be out several weeks according to head coach Sean McDermott. Keon Coleman has managed to stay healthy during training camp, but aside from him, injuries have been found up-and-down the receiver depth chart. Shakir was Buffalo's top receiver last season. Epenesa sighting Pass rusher AJ Epenesa has had a quiet training camp and overshadowed by new additions at his position such as Joey Bosa. Epenesa caught attention on Sunday. The team's website noted that Epenesa was swatting passes at the line and ever had a pick-six interception during practice. NFL Top 100: Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon is No. 58, will face Arizona Cardinals in 2025

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon is No. 58 in the 'NFL Top 100.' The Cardinals face the Texans in Week 15. Last week, the NFL had its fifth week of revealing players in the "NFL Top 100," giving us players 51-60. On Tuesday, they revealed a player at No. 58 who will face the Arizona Cardinals in 2024. Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon comes in at No. 58 after missing the top 100 last summer. Mixon, in his first season with the Texans in 2024, had his fifth career 1,000-yard season, gaining 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games, averaging 4.1 yards per attempt. He made the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career. Defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, now on the Washington Commanders, called Mixon "one of the most underrated running backs in the game." "He's one of the bigger backs, but you can tell he's still elusive." Wide receiver Nico Collins, his teammate in Houston, said, "Every time he touches the ball, he's on a mission. He doesn't care who's in front of him, he's going to run you over, and he's going to tell you about it." Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin said Mixon was probably the best back he faced in 2024. The Cardinals will face Mixon and the Texans on the road in Week 15. The Cardinals' remade defensive front will be tested against him. USC football countdown to kickoff—Ajene Harris in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 27 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC running back cornerback Ajene Harris. Position: Cornerback Years played at USC: 2014-2018 Career highlights: Although he played quarterback in high school, Harris switched to wide receiver when he arrived at USC in 2014. As a true freshman, he caught four passes for 38 yards, before missing the entire 2015 season with a hip injury. Following his return to the field in 2016, Harris changed positions again, this time converting to cornerback. Harris became USC's starter at nickel back towards the end of the 2016 season, holding down that role for the rest of his career in Cardinal and Gold. He finished his time at USC with 148 total tackles, 17 passes defended, six interception—three of which he returned for touchdowns—1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. In addition, Harris returned punts for the Trojans and still took occasional snaps on offense even after converting to cornerback. After USC: Harris signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent some time with Philadelphia's practice squad, but never appeared in a regular season NFL game. Since 2020, he has played in various other football leagues, including the XFL, the United States Football League (USFL), and most recently the United Football League (UFL). Harris currently plays for the UFL's Arlington Renegades. In each of the past two years, he has been named to the All-UFL team.
