India opener KL Rahul said the team is confident about taking all 10 England wickets on the final day of the first Test at Headingley. India have set England a big target of 371 runs, and Rahul believes a result is surely coming.
India were bowled out for 364 in their second innings, with Rahul scoring 137 and Rishabh Pant smashing 118. The duo added 195 runs for the fourth wicket and took India to a strong position after losing captain Shubman Gill early in the day.

'Blockbuster finish waiting tomorrow. There's definitely going to be a result. That's what England have said openly and it gives us the opportunity to pick up 10 wickets,' Rahul said at the press conference after stumps on Day 4, referring to England pacer Josh Tongue's comments after the close of play.
England say they will go for chase
Tongue, who took 3 wickets for 72 runs, said the mood in the England camp was positive and that they would go for a result tomorrow. This England team is known for its aggressive style of play, which they like to call 'Bazball.' England have shown in the past that they can chase big totals even on the last day of a Test match.
'Go for the chase tomorrow, that's the messaging in the dressing room. There's no reason we can't chase it down. Hopefully, we won't be in a situation to play out for a draw. See where we are at lunch and calculate,' he said.
Rahul believes batting won't be easy on Day 5
Meanwhile, Rahul said the pitch was tricky and could get tougher on Day 5. He also admitted that India were looking for a bigger lead but couldn't get there. India collapsed from 333/5 to 364 all out, losing five wickets for just 31 runs, including three ducks in the lower order.

'Today was a tricky wicket. Tomorrow it might break even more. We'll give ourselves the best chance to pick up the 10 wickets. At tea, there was a little bit of discussion on how much we need, or whether to give them (England) a few overs to bat and pick up a few wickets. Ideally, we would have wanted about 40 runs more,' he added.
With England needing 350 more runs and all wickets still in hand, and India needing 10 wickets, fans can expect a thrilling final day at Headingley on Tuesday.

After Pant Rejected Somersault, Gavaskar Reveals He 'Wanted To Do Backstand'

Last Updated: Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he was aiming to do a backstand on live broadcast after Rishabh Pant aborted the somersault celebration. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has revealed that he was planning to do a backstand after Rishabh Pant rejected to do the somersault celebration after scoring his second century of the Headingley Test on Tuesday (May 24). Speaking on the broadcast after the day's play, Gavaskar, 75, said that he used to do backstands when he was younger and was willing to show it to the world even at his age but 'wasn't able to'. Pant did the somersault after scoring his century in the first innings of the Test. When he got to his second in the third innings — becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper to hit twin tons in a Test — Gavaskar was standing at the media balcony gesturing him to do it again. But Pant, perhaps tired or in pain, rejected and gestured that he'd do it later, before proceeding with a different celebration instead. 'You know what, I've got to confess that after that I came here and I, and I tried not to do the backflip, no chance of, at my age, but I used to do the backstand and I was looking to do the backstand," Gavaskar said on the Sony Sports Network. 'So if I could do it successfully then, then I would have shown it here, but I wasn't able to," he added. Gavaskar, who has shared a love-hate relationship with Pant, said he was 'very happy' to see the wicketkeeper back up on his feet and giving joy to his family after his car crash two years ago. 'Very, very happy. I mean, anytime an Indian does well, you feel very happy because you know the passion for cricket in India, how just about every, in every family, I'm sure there is at least one person who, it might not be everybody, at least one person who follows the game. And therefore to make that family happy, if you can do well, if India does well, then naturally it is, it's a great feeling. And so to see this young kid, come back, I mean, look what had happened to him with all those, with that crash," he added. First Published: June 24, 2025, 08:13 IST

KL Rahul's 'hurtful' admission after going past Rahul Dravid with Leeds knock: 'When I look at my average...'

KL Rahul has suddenly found himself bearing far more responsibility in the Indian Test team, as he graduated into being a senior player with a lot more on his table than even just 6 months prior. The retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have converted him into the veteran leader of the batting unit, and that is certainly a tag he lived up to at Headingley, as he scored a graceful, in-complete-control 137 in the third innings. Rahul is attempting to solve that issue in his game, and after a 2025 that has seen him find his groove in ODI cricket and now possibly Tests, he seems to have found the mental key for that edge. 'I am just getting runs now. There was a time when I would get starts but not convert them into big scores, especially in Tests,' said KL Rahul straightforwardly to Sky Cricket after the fourth day's play in Leeds. 'I am much calmer in my head and not chasing numbers anymore. I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can.' KL Rahul prioritises creating an impact for India over personal accolades While Rahul's mind may no longer be on numbers, they do now say that eight of his nine Test centuries have been scored overseas. Rahul's opening role wasn't nailed down, with criticism over his poor average despite repeated in the Test team often lobbed at him. However, he will have hoped to have turned a page, given the showcase he put on at Headingley. While the numbers might not be make-or-break for Rahul, he does have the distinction of being the player with the most centuries as an opener in England, this being his third of his career. He outdoes Rahul Dravid, who previously had two, as well as Sunul Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri. Rahul isn't happy with where his average is, but he has also realised that if he plays well and finds a zone for himself, the runs and that average will follow. 'Of course, it hurts when I look at my average. But at this stage, I don't want to think about numbers. I want to make an impact whenever I get a chance and enjoy playing Test cricket for India and it's what I grew up loving,' explained Rahul. With all the talent to be a gamechanger of a player in this Test series, it goes over to the Indian bowling unit to try and produce a result in the first Test match, with England needing a further 350 runs and India needing all 10 wickets in an incredibly balanced contest heading into day 5.

India Achieve Historic First In 93 Years, Register Rarest Of Rare Feat As Rishabh Pant And Co. Domination vs England

The Indian team made a historic record during their Leeds Test against England, as for the first time, they registered a total of five centuries in a Test match. The Test at Leeds has been a run-fest for Team India so far, with their lead well beyond 300 runs. In the first innings, triple treat of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 in 159 balls, with 16 fours), skipper Shubman Gill (147 in 227 balls, with 19 fours and a six) and Rishabh Pant (134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes) powered India to 471. After England's strong reply that left India's lead to just six runs, KL Rahul, who missed out on a fifty in the first innings, got his big one too, while Pant became India's first wicketkeeper-batter with twin Test tons, scoring 118 in 140 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes. It is the sixth time ever that this milestone has been achieved by a team in Test cricket. India also became the second side to do it in an away Test after Australia against the West Indies in Kingston in 1955. That feat was in fact even more brilliant as all five centuries by Australians came in just one innings, by Colin McDonald (127), Neil Harvey (204), Keith Miller (109), Ron Archer (128) and Richie Benaud (121), powering Aussies to 758/8 declared. Australia won that match by an innings margin. Coming to the match, at Tea, India were 298/4, with KL Rahul (120*) and Karun Nair (4*) unbeaten. Pant scored 118 runs in the second innings, his second ton in the match, and consolidated the innings with a crucial 195-run partnership with KL Rahul. India started the second session at 153/3, with Pant (31*) and KL (72*) unbeaten. The duo launched a brilliant counter-attack against English bowling, taking them to their respective centuries, with Pant dismissed for 118 in 140 balls, with 15 fours and three sixes. India ended the first session at 153/3, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant (31*) and KL Rahul (72*) unbeaten. Despite Carse striking early, removing Shubman for just eight and sinking India to 92/3, Team India managed to give themselves a solid platform to go all guns out blazing for the remainder of the match, but not without giving England some chances. The final session on day three was cut short due to rain. Rahul was joined by skipper Shubman Gill, who was unbeaten on 6*. India ended at 90/2. England started the second session at 327/5, with Harry Brook (57*) and Jamie Smith (29*) unbeaten. Brook continued his counter-attack, while Smith (40 in 52 balls, with five fours and a six), Chris Woakes (38 in 55 balls, with three fours and two sixes) and Brydon Cwefarse (22 in 23 balls, with four boundaries) also piled up useful scores. Brook missed out on his century, scoring 99 in 112 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, with Prasidh Krishna getting him caught by Shardul Thakur at deep backwards square leg. A 55-run stand between Woakes and Carse took England past the 400-run mark, and they threatened to surpass India's first innings total before Jasprit Bumrah came in clutch. Bumrah (5/83) and Prasidh Krishna (3/128) were the top bowlers as England was bowled out for 465. England kickstarted the first session of the day at 209/3, with Ollie Pope (100*) and Brook (0*) unbeaten. While Prasidh struck early to remove Pope (106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours), Brook stitched a 51-run stand with skipper Ben Stokes (20 in 52 balls) and a 73-run stand with Smith, taking England well beyond the 300-run mark at session end. A century by Ollie Pope (106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours) and fifty from Ben Duckett (62 in 94 balls, with nine fours) on day two served as valuable contributions as well.
