A Complete Guide to Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' Adaptation

Yahoo03-06-2025
Guillermo del Toro's next project has been years in the making.
The Academy Award–winning director—known for his fantastical touch on horror stories, from Pan's Labyrinth (2006) to Pinocchio (2022)—will adapt Mary Shelley's seminal 1818 novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Widely credited as the first-ever science-fiction book, Shelley chronicled the tale of Victor Frankenstein, an obsessive scientist who discovers a new way to create life. Through his experiments, Frankenstein gives rise to a grotesque but intelligent creature whose existence instills terror in all who encounter him.
Del Toro's unique perspective on filmmaking stems from his love of Shelley's novel. 'My favorite novel in the world is Frankenstein,' he told Collider in a 2010 interview. 'I'm going to misquote it horribly, but the monster says, 'I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.' As a child that was disenfranchised from everything, and that was in a world that was the wrong size, run by the wrong people, the wrong morale and the wrong rules, I felt completely outside of that, and I wanted some measure of control, and the measure of control I found was through fear.'
Ahead, we break down everything we know so far about del Toro's take on Frankenstein.
With its Netflix release date slated for November, Frankenstein will surely be a top contender for the perfect fall spooky watch.
Del Toro has recruited some of the most beloved names in Hollywood to lead his adaptation of Frankenstein. Oscar Isaac is set to portray Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist whose eerie invention goes awry. Meanwhile, Jacob Elordi will play Frankenstein's monster, a creature whose lifeless body is reanimated through electricity. Other names associated with del Toro's project include Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza and Christoph Waltz as Harlander, as well as Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Covery, and Charles Dance.
The official teaser trailer, which dropped in May 2025, gives fans their first glimpse into the eerie world that del Toro crafted for Frankenstein.
'What manner of creature is that? What manner of devil made him?' a voice asks as the camera pans to a tall and foreboding figure standing alone near the horizon line. 'I did,' Isaac answers as a weary and fearful Frankenstein.

In the first-look photos released by Netflix, Isaac can be seen as Victor Frankenstein as he speaks at a medical lecture hall and works in his grisly laboratory.
Del Toro previously talked about the effect that Shelley's Gothic novel had on his perspective as a filmmaker.
'The monster says, 'I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear,'' he said during a 2010 interview with Collider. 'The reality is that I feel that fear is a very spiritual emotion. In a world where we are so pragmatic and materialistic, fear is the only emotion that allows even a sophisticated person to believe in something beyond. We are such skeptics that we find it difficult to believe in God and angels and a spiritual afterlife, but a moment of fear makes our spirit so vulnerable that it allows us to believe in something beyond that. It's also a boundary, and there's nothing that defines who you are more than boundaries, whether you cross them or not, in every aspect of your life, and horror is a really great boundary.'

This former 'Friday Night Lights' star may make a cameo in series reboot

Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can't lose. Those six words are permanently etched into the brains of every fan who ever watched the hit TV show Friday Night Lights and they may hear them again soon. Back in December, fans of the show learned that a new adaptation of the series is currently in development at Peacock (which beat out Netflix) and Universal Television. The new show takes place after a hurricane as a Texas high school football team attempts to compete for a state championship. We don't know much about the show yet, but here is what we heard from Peter Berg, who will return as director and executive producer of the show (via Esquire): "It's a complete reinvention of the show. We want to do it with a whole new cast, but obviously there'll be football in it. But the original show was done a long time ago ... There's just so many new elements, so we want to look at that. And if certain cast members come back, have appearances, that's great. But if Friday Night Lights works, it'll be because it works as a reinvention.' So which of these "certain cast members" might come back to have appearances? Connie Britton, who played one of the lead roles Tami Taylor, told Vanity Fair earlier this summer that she would be willing to have a "real tight little cameo" in the reboot. Taylor Kitsch, who portrayed star player Tim Riggins, said in the same interview that he "won't be a part of it" this time around. During a recent interview with The Wrap to promote The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, it once again seemed that Kitsch did not seem particularly interested: "I was asked to do it. Yeah, I'm not going back. No." Based on that answer, it seemed unlikely fans would see Riggins in the project. During his conversation with Access Hollywood, meanwhile, Kitsch added that he had not spoken to Kyle Chandler about it. But he seemed more willing to participate. "[Expletive] I'll do a cameo. I would do one. It's got to be out of control, though. I don't know. We'll see." Then, when asked how he thought Riggins was probably spending his time these days, here is what he said: "Where would Riggs be? Probably [expletive] having a cold one on the lake with a couple girls waiting for him in the cabin." So perhaps Kitsch would actually do a funny arc (perhaps as an opposing coach) in the new version of the show in an episode "for like eight seconds" after all. Meanwhile, in addition to Berg as director and executive producer, Jason Katims will return as the showrunner and executive producer. Brian Grazer will return as an executive producer. Kristen Zolner from Imagine Entertainment will also join as an executive producer. This article originally appeared on For The Win: Friday Night Lights star may make a cameo in series reboot

Pamela Anderson Responds To Meghan Markle 'Rip-Off' Drama With 1 Perfect Line

Pamela Anderson has no time for catty comparisons to Meghan Markle. The 'Baywatch' star appeared on 'Watch What Happens Live' with Andy Cohen on Sunday, and was asked if she found the Duchess of Sussex's cooking show similar to her own. 'On a scale from one to 10, how much of a rip-off did you feel like 'With Love, Meghan' was of your show, 'Pamela's Cooking with Love?'' Cohen asked Anderson. 'There were articles saying that these two shows were very similar.' 'One ― I didn't [find them similar],' Anderson said while shaking her head no. 'One?' Cohen followed up. 'On a scale from one to 10, a one. You did not see any similarities?' 'I didn't really look,' the 'Naked Gun' actor explained before expertly shutting down any drama with one perfect line. 'I didn't invent cooking shows,' Anderson said with a laugh. 'So I mean ― she's just doing her thing.' Anderson's show was released in February 2025 on Amazon Prime, while Meghan's show premiered on Netflix in March after a two-month delay due to the wildfires in California. Meghan's show and lifestyle brand have previously drawn comparisons to Anderson's show, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow's and Martha Stewart's empires. While Paltrow and the duchess unveiled a surprise social media collaboration to shut down rumors of any beef between the two, Stewart was a little cagier in her most recent response to supposed similarities. 'Meghan I don't really know very well, and I hope she knows what she's talking about,' Stewart said of the duchess during an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle. 'Authenticity, to me, is everything, and to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important,' the lifestyle guru added. Related...
