Canada city to honour Komagata Maru Indians with ‘Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day'
The council's proclamation notes that the day had been named after Guru Nanak Jahaz, as the vessel had been rechristened so before the journey by Baba Gurdit Singh, giving the sojourn political, cultural, and spiritual significance.
While the authorities at the time had said the Indians were asked to return as they suspected they were revolutionaries, many had called the decision to be the fallout of strained race relations in the Canadian city.
The remembrance day is being observed to mark the 111th anniversary of the the ship being made to return.
Earlier, the city council of Vancouver had proclaimed May 23 as Guru Nanak Jahaz (Komagata Maru) Day of Remembrance, as it was on May 23, 1914, that the ship had reached reached Burrard Inlet near Vancouver with 376 Indians, including 340 Sikhs, 24 Muslims, and 12 Hindus.
Of them, only 24 could prove prior residency and were allowed entry into Canada.

"Mayor of the city of Surrey, Brenda Locke, will declare the proclamation on July 23, while Vancouver mayor Ken Sim made the proclamation on May 23.
The commemoration will include reflections and a shared act of remembrance honouring the passengers' moral courage and the enduring contributions of those who carried this memory forward to the heart of Canadian public life," said Abbotsford resident Gurvinder Singh Dhaliwal, who, along with Raj Singh Bhandal, runs the Guru Nanak Jahaz Heritage Society and is the force behind the proclamations.
The proclamation also mentions the Guru Nanak Jahaz as a name of "deep spiritual and cultural meaning", overshadowed by the commonly used name Komagata Maru, which carried 376 persons who were denied disembarkation under exclusionary immigration laws and ultimately forced to depart from Vancouver's Burrard Inlet on July 23, 1914.
"Today, descendants and communities across Canada remember this journey as a courageous stand against colonialism at home, only to be met with discrimination and injustice upon arrival," said the proclamation.
Surrey is today home to one of the largest Sikh and Punjabi populations in Canada. "The city recognises the Guru Nanak Jahaz passengers' pursuit of dignity, equal opportunity, and justice, which faced discrimination under the Continuous Journey law. Their legacy stands as a continuous inspiration to fight against injustice," said the proclamation.

These are currently operational at Jawaniya High School, Jawaniya embankment and Damodarpur village embankment, according to revenue official Nitish Kumar. Relief measures include free medical camps, potable water, milk for children, fodder for cattle, polythene sheets and transportation to safer areas. "Instructions have been issued to ensure the distribution of quality meals to affected villagers," stated a press release from the DM's office. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Ara MP Sudama Prasad called for immediate and permanent measures. "A concrete embankment must be constructed to prevent future disasters. The root cause erosion needs a lasting solution," he said, also demanding compensation of Rs 25 lakh each for families who lost their homes in the flood.

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Delhi government will construct 2,856 modern bus queue shelters across the capital, drawing design models from global cities like London, Singapore and Moscow as well as Indian cities to offer commuters a smarter and more uniform travel experience. The government plans to replace outdated Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) shelters under this major revamp and expand the existing network with modern structures and innovative designs. These new shelters will feature digital display screens showing real-time bus arrival information, route maps, QR code-based feedback systems, solar panels for energy efficiency, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, USB charging ports and smart lighting to improve visibility and safety during night hours, an official told PTI. To achieve uniformity, 1,397 shelters have already undergone feasibility surveys and an additional 1,459 shelters are proposed for the next phase, bringing the total to 2,856, the official said. All 2,856 shelters will be taken under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with no expenditure from the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC), following a recent meeting chaired by the Delhi transport minister, he added. Among these, 250 are old-type DTC shelters, 1,580 are stainless steel modern shelters, and 191 are mild steel shelters installed through MP and MLA LAD funds. CBSE warns schools: No more than 45 students per section—no exceptions
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new circular for schools affiliated with the board which says they can now register up to 45 students per section in exceptional circumstances. This move, outlined in Circular No. 11/2025, aims to address challenges faced by schools in accommodating students, particularly in cases involving transfers or other unique situations. The exception will apply only in cases where schools are unable to adhere to the regular limit of 40 students per section. Key changes and background overview This circular comes as a follow-up to a previous decision by the board in August 2023, which relaxed the student limit from 40 to 45 for the academic sessions 2023-24 to 2025-26. The relaxation was introduced to help schools manage existing student numbers and ensure that admissions align with the prescribed norms. However, it was also expected that schools would work to gradually control the student intake and manage overcrowding in classrooms. This further revision expands the scope of exceptions to include a wider range of circumstances. Conditions for admission beyond the limit Under the new guidelines, schools can admit up to 45 students per section, provided they meet certain conditions. Schools are required to record the reasons for exceeding the limit in the online registration portal, as well as in the Admission & Withdrawal Register. This applies to all sections from classes 1 to 12. Key conditions include: The school must ensure that classroom sizes are at least 500 square feet, in compliance with CBSE's requirement of one square meter of built-up floor area per student. No school is permitted to admit more than 45 students per section, even under exceptional circumstances. The reasons for admitting more than 40 students must be documented and approved via the OASIS portal. The board has also emphasised that this exception applies only in cases where infrastructure permits, with an urgent request for schools to improve physical infrastructure where possible to eventually return to the optimal student-to-classroom ratio.
