George Russell wins Canadian Grand Prix

Motorsports
British driver George Russell of Mercedes has won the Canadian Grand Prix, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen just 0.228 seconds behind, with Russell's Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in third, 1.014 seconds behind the leader.
The race ended behind a safety car after McLaren's Lando Norris collided with his teammate Oscar Piastri and damaged his vehicle on the 67th of 70 laps. Norris took full responsibility for the error when communicating with his team on the team radio, saying he was 'stupid' for attempting the inside pass.
Piastri finished fourth after eight straight races on the podium this season.
The podium finish mirrored the results in qualifying on Saturday. Russell won the pole for the sixth time in his career. Verstappen was second, and Piastri, who leads the driver standings with 186 points, started from the third position.
Russell also started from the pole position last year at the Canadian GP, but Verstappen won that race for the third straight year.
It's Russell's fourth career F1 victory after winning the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022, followed by victories last year in Austria and Las Vegas.
Montrealer Lance Stroll was the last of 17th drivers to complete the race.

Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn rematch set for November at Tottenham

LONDON (AP) — The rematch of British boxers Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn has been scheduled for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Nov. 15, nearly seven months after their spirited first meeting. Eubank Jr. won a unanimous decision over Benn in a 12-round middleweight bout, more than 30 years after their fathers shared the ring in two memorable slugfests. Saudi sports promoter Turki Alalshikh announced the rematch Wednesday through Ring Magazine, which he owns. Eubank Jr. and Benn also posted the news on their Instagram accounts. On April 26, also at Tottenham, Eubank (35-3) handed Benn (23-1) his first professional loss in a brawl for bragging rights. All three judges scored the non-title fight 116-112. Their bout was originally set for 2022 but was scrapped after Benn's voluntary urine test showed trace amounts of the fertility drug Clomiphene, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels while burning fat. Benn argued successfully that his consumption of eggs elevated his testosterone levels. At their first media face-to-face before the April fight, Eubank pulled out an egg and smacked it on Benn's face. The British Boxing Board of Control fined him 100,000 pounds ($130,000). ___ AP boxing:

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel makes big move to rival team

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave the team where he became one of the best riders of his generation to join Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe from next season. The 25-year-old Belgian rider informed Soudal Quick-Step that he would not extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2026. The team said on Tuesday it has agreed to release him early. 'After taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team's ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season,' Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. Evenepoel signed with Soudal Quick-Step at a young age after the squad's former manager Patrick Lefevere spotted his immense potential. Under Lefevere's supervision, Evenepoel won prestigious races, including the 2022 Spanish Vuelta, two stages of the Tour de France and two titles at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He finished third at the 2024 Tour de France but withdrew from this year's edition. Widely considered the best time trialist in the world, Evenepoel remains focused on winning more Grand Tours. 'Remco stands for ambition. He doesn't just want to ride — he wants to shape cycling,' said Ralph Denk, the CEO of Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe. 'He brings not only exceptional athletic talent but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring.' Evenepoel's move will strengthen Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, where he will team up with Primož Roglič and Florian Lipowitz, who finished third in last month's Tour de France. 'Evenepoel's arrival marks more than just a milestone for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, it is a clear signal,' the team said. 'With renewed confidence and bold ambition, the team is setting its course to become one of the most attractive forces on the international cycling stage in the years to come.' Evenepoel hadn't yet commented Tuesday, though he posted Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe's 'Welcome Remco!' message on his Instagram account. A year ago in Paris, Evenepoel become the first rider to sweep the road race and time trial at the Summer Games. ___ AP sports:

Create Account The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana. An Arsenal spokesman previously said: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.' Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to Spanish club Villarreal.
