If the top Malaysian pair and world No. 3 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei win their semi-final clash against Denmark's Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje later today, it could set up a historic all-Malaysian showdown in the final.

Immigration FC eyes Darulaman Stadium as Super League home
ALOR STAR: Immigration FC (IFC) is eyeing the iconic Darulaman Stadium as its home ground for the upcoming Super League season in a bid to bring top-tier football closer to fans in the northern region. The team, which falls under the Home Ministry's purview, will be based in the north to offer supporters in Kedah and Perlis the opportunity to back a Super League side on home turf, said Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin said IFC, one of two teams under the ministry set to feature in the Super League next season, began intensive training in July, with Kedah chosen as the team's preparation base. "There are already many teams in the Klang Valley. But in the north, Perlis and Kedah — once dominant forces in Malaysian football — are no longer in the Super League. That's why we're stationing IFC here," he said during a press conference at the Raia Hotel and Convention Centre yesterday. "This gives northern football fans a new option, a Super League team they can follow much closer to them." For now, IFC will play home matches at Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang, pending approval to use Darulaman Stadium. The team will train at the Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) headquarters stadium in Alor Star. Saifuddin said the Datuk Sheikh Ahmad Stadium in Arau is also being considered once upgrade works are completed in the coming months. "We've submitted our application and are waiting for a response... The best is if we can get Darulaman, we plan to lease the stadium for a whole season," he said. "This is good income for the stadium as Super League matches are played at night, while A1 League matches are held in the afternoon, so there should be no scheduling conflicts." Darulaman Stadium is currently the home ground of the Kedah Football Association (KFA), which competes in the A1 Semi-Pro League. On IFC's prospects, Saifuddin expressed confidence that the squad, comprising seasoned local players and international imports, could be competitive in its debut season. He said he told the head coach, Yusri Che Lah, to focus on building the team and not worry about lofty goals. "Of course, I whispered, 'Top four.' He replied, 'Let's aim for top five,'" he quipped. Saifuddin added that several corporate sponsors had also come on board with strong support for the team this season.

Veteran Syafiq seeks second wind, and more fuel, with Brunei
PETALING JAYA: After more than a decade of playing in Malaysia's top tier, Syafiq Ahmad ( pic ) is embracing a new challenge and a new home. The 30-year-old attacker, who has previously donned the jerseys of Kedah and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), has made a surprise switch to Brunei this season as the nation marks its return to the Malaysian Super League after a 16-year hiatus. For Syafiq, the move is more than just a change in scenery – it's a personal and professional reset. 'I wanted to experience a new wind – in Malay, we say angin baru,' said Syafiq. 'It is nice to be in a new team, especially one that's making a comeback to the league after such a long time.' Having made his professional debut with Kedah in 2013 and achieving success with JDT from 2018 onwards, Syafiq is now one of the senior figures in the Brunei set-up. He also brings with him international pedigree, with 43 caps and 11 goals for the Malaysian national team. But his role in Brunei is not just about experience. It is strategic. Syafiq has been brought in to form a lethal partnership with rising Indonesian star Ramadhan Sananta, one of South-East Asia's most promising young strikers. 'It is easy to work with him in attack and we will do our best to help the team.' Syafiq, who is known for being a relentless presser and often acts as a team's first defender up front, will likely play a hybrid role – part creator, part finisher – while guiding the younger players around him. He has only been with the team for two weeks but he is already feeling at home. 'It is harmonious so far. The players and officials have treated me well. I can't wait for the season to get started. One major factor in his smooth transition has been the club's coach Jamie McAllister, who Syafiq credits for being a players' coach. 'The coach always looks at the side of the player. He's someone who's good at man management. It's easy to discuss tactical matters and other things with him.' Brunei will start their league campaign by taking on Police at the Selayang Stadium on Aug 9.

Su Yin battles fear and self-doubt ahead of debut in World C'ships

Su Yin has struggled for form this year with Hoo Pang Ron and suffered a second-round defeat to eventual champions Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje of Denmark in the Macau Open last week. Worryingly, it was the pair's ninth early round exit this year and they have only made it as far as the last eight twice in the Indonesian Masters and Orleans Masters. Pang Ron-Su Yin finished runners-up in the China Masters last November but have looked a shadow of their best selves this year. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said that the 22-year-old Su Yin is struggling with fear and self-doubt and needs to overcome these to get back to her best. "Pang Ron-Su Yin's problems started when they unexpectedly lost to a Taiwanese pair in the Malaysian Open first round in January," said Rexy. "They were leading but could not maintain their performance and lost. After that, Su Yin started doubting herself. "Last year, she played with a nothing-to-lose mentality as there were no expectations on her and Pang Ron. "She was fearless as it was a surprise whenever they won. This year, she has started to feel pressured and fears making mistakes. "She and Pang Ron have stagnated and she needs to change her way of thinking," added Rexy. Pang Ron-Su Yin don't have much time to work on their weaknesses with the World Championships coming up next for them from Aug 25-31 in Paris. The pair will be making their debuts together in the prestigious meet. The other Malaysia mixed doubles pairs that have qualified are world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. For the record, Malaysia have only won a medal once in the mixed doubles in the world meet through Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty, who claimed bronze in the 2006 edition in Madrid. In the last edition in 2023 in Copenhagen, Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who reached the quarter-finals, were the country's best performers in the mixed doubles.
