Veteran Syafiq seeks second wind, and more fuel, with Brunei
The 30-year-old attacker, who has previously donned the jerseys of Kedah and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), has made a surprise switch to Brunei this season as the nation marks its return to the Malaysian Super League after a 16-year hiatus.
For Syafiq, the move is more than just a change in scenery – it's a personal and professional reset.
'I wanted to experience a new wind – in Malay, we say angin baru,' said Syafiq.
'It is nice to be in a new team, especially one that's making a comeback to the league after such a long time.'
Having made his professional debut with Kedah in 2013 and achieving success with JDT from 2018 onwards, Syafiq is now one of the senior figures in the Brunei set-up.
He also brings with him international pedigree, with 43 caps and 11 goals for the Malaysian national team.
But his role in Brunei is not just about experience. It is strategic.
Syafiq has been brought in to form a lethal partnership with rising Indonesian star Ramadhan Sananta, one of South-East Asia's most promising young strikers.
With Syafiq's intelligent movement, pressing ability, and knack for unlocking defences with timely through balls and powerful headers, the duo is expected to spearhead Brunei's attack.
'Ramadhan is a hardworking lad, has good football qualities and is a good human being as well,' Syafiq said of his new teammate.
'It is easy to work with him in attack and we will do our best to help the team.'
Syafiq, who is known for being a relentless presser and often acts as a team's first defender up front, will likely play a hybrid role – part creator, part finisher – while guiding the younger players around him.
He has only been with the team for two weeks but he is already feeling at home.
'It is harmonious so far. The players and officials have treated me well. I can't wait for the season to get started.
One major factor in his smooth transition has been the club's coach Jamie McAllister, who Syafiq credits for being a players' coach.
'The coach always looks at the side of the player. He's someone who's good at man management. It's easy to discuss tactical matters and other things with him.'
Brunei will start their league campaign by taking on Police at the Selayang Stadium on Aug 9.

PM Anwar condemns hooliganism in sports, stresses unity
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly stated that hooliganism and violence have no place in sports, especially football. He stressed that sports should unite Malaysians rather than divide them through unruly behaviour. 'Everyone supports their team or their state or their province, but that does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism. So we'll make a difference. Don't import that culture of hooliganism in sports as you read and see and watch on television from the experience of other countries,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony of Olympic House. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was also present at the event. Anwar acknowledged that passion in sports is natural but should not justify actions against sportsmanship. 'People cry when they win and they cry when they lose. You know, which means you cannot deny the passion. But it does not warrant them to take actions which run contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship,' he added. He called for greater tolerance, stating that intolerance contradicts the unifying nature of sports. Anwar highlighted how sportsmanship uniquely bridges racial divides in Malaysia, unlike politics. 'There's no language in politics for sportsmanship. Politics is where you kill one another — I mean, not literally, hopefully. But only in sports, not in culture, not in the arts, not in economic rivalry,' he said. He emphasised that sportsmanship means striving to win while accepting defeat gracefully. Reflecting on Malaysia's history, Anwar recalled how sports like football and badminton united people during tense times. 'It doesn't matter whether he's Malay, Chinese, Dayak or Indian — we consider them all Malaysian. And that's what I feel we need to promote. But of course, we also need to excel,' he said. Jokingly, he added that Malaysia expects at least one Olympic gold medal under Minister Hannah Yeoh and OCM President Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria. Sharing advice for his grandchildren, Anwar stressed the importance of accepting losses with dignity. 'I said, I told them that's not the spirit. JDT coach seeks statement win
Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) head coach Xisco Munoz has warned that his team are determined to put on a commanding performance against Selangor in the Charity Shield tomorrow, as they chase a staggering 10th title since 2015. Having won the Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup nine times in the last decade, the Southern Tigers remain the dominant force in Malaysian football. However, Munoz stressed that history counts for little and that this year's clash at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium is a chance to prove JDT's readiness to defend their Super League crown. "We want to show our fans that we are prepared. We've worked hard in pre-season, and this is our first chance to show the level we are at," said Munoz. "I know Selangor are hungry and motivated, but we are playing in our stadium, with our people, and we want to start with a statement performance." JDT's consistency since the league's privatisation in 2014 has been unrivalled. They have lifted the Charity Shield in every year they contested it except 2017, including triumphs in 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021. The last time they lost the curtain-raiser was in 2017 to Kedah (4-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time). Before their privatisation era, they had only won the trophy once, in 1986. For Munoz, the motivation is not just to keep the winning tradition alive, but to sharpen the squad's cohesion ahead of a gruelling season. "The important thing is not just the title, it's also about building momentum. "We are focused on being competitive in every competition. But tomorrow, it's about intensity, pride, and winning the first trophy of the season." Despite missing several key players for this clash, JDT captain Natxo Insa insists the team are prepared for the challenge ahead and ready to defend the club's reputation. "We've had a terrific pre-season and we're ready to give everything tomorrow," said Insa. "We know how important it is to start the season with good feelings. We've had a few problems and injuries, but that's part of the challenge, and JDT are always ready to face big games." Insa, 39, has been with JDT since 2017. The Spanish-Malaysian midfielder, who will captain the side, has made 133 appearances, scored six goals and provided seven assists for the club. And he is not slowing down. "Of course, I am ready. I am still hungry. I may have my age, but I'm still motivated to give 100 per cent." With a mix of new and experienced players, Insa stressed that JDT are focused solely on themselves, not their opponents. "This is about our mentality. We are JDT, we are playing at home, and we want to give everything. "This club is made for achieving things. We must win every game. Everyone understands who we are and what we need to show every time we play." Meanwhile, Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, who took charge of the Red Giants last November, is set to lead the team in his first competitive match. But he is keeping the pressure off himself despite the magnitude of the occasion. "I don't put too much focus on the fact that this is my first match against JDT. We're honoured to face them in this beautiful stadium. We want to enjoy the match, and by enjoy, I mean to work hard and show our strong mentality."
