Eddie Hearn drops Anthony Joshua injury update and reveals return fight plans

Daily Mirror6 days ago

The two-time heavyweight world champion is hoping to return to competitive action later this year after undergoing successful elbow surgery
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has shared that his top client, Anthony Joshua, is plotting his next steps after a successful elbow operation.
The two-time heavyweight world champion has not stepped into the ring since his crushing knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last September. Initially, it seemed 'AJ' was gearing up for an immediate rematch with 'Triple D', but minor injuries from their first bout meant the 35-year-old was not ready for a quick return.

The British boxer had planned a summer comeback, but an elbow injury delayed his return to full training. Now, post-surgery, Joshua is eyeing a return to the ring towards the end of the year, according to his promoter. "He's had the operation, which went very well, and now he's just sort of rehabbing it," Hearn told BoxingScene.

"I believe about six weeks till he can punch again properly, and that kind of lends itself to a September, October, November fight. That gives us a chance to see what happens with Dubois against Usyk. That gives us a chance to see if Mr. Fury will ever return, and maybe something else. But he's definitely fighting this year and looking forward to it."
Tyson Fury retired for the fifth time in January following his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. However, Joshua hasn't given up on the prospect of a match with the former champion. 'AJ' remains sceptical about Fury's retirement being permanent and seems confident that their bout could still happen.
The 35-year-old recently shared a snap of himself watching Fury's fight on his private Snapchat, hinted at a future showdown with the 'Gypsy King', stating: "One of these days I'll be standing in the opposite corner. Ready and fully charged spiritually." However, Fury dealt another blow to his long-time rival by asserting he had nothing left to prove in the boxing ring. Speaking from Lake Como, he said: "I hear a lot of talk about the Gypsy King returning to boxing and I ask this question: for what? What would I return for? More belts? I've won 22 of them.
"I've been used, that's it, fair play to them, they got their use out of me. But I'm happy, I am happy, content with what I have achieved and accomplished. I've been around the world and back again. And this is what retirement looks like for the Gypsy King, not too shabby."
Fury added: 'I'm in no rush at all, to come back to boxing and get my face punched in. For what? What would I return for? I ask that question. I am retired and I am staying retired. I have nothing to prove to anybody and nothing to return for." The video was shared just days after he teased an imminent announcement hinting at a potential comeback. In an Instagram video alongside his father John Fury, the Gypsy King said: "Business meeting today, dad. En-route. Incoming, incoming."
Before dropping a hint to his fans, Fury treated them to a sneak peek inside the gym with his coach SugarHill Steward. "Just in the gym, happened to bump into somebody you might know," the Gypsy King teased in the video he shared. As the camera swivelled to capture his trainer's beaming face, SugarHill made no secret of the excitement in the air, declaring: "You know what time it is!" Closing out his social media share, the heavyweight champ dangled a tantalising teaser, saying simply but suggestively: "You know what's coming."

Neymar begs fans to 'forgive' him for bizarre Diego Maradona-esque 'Hand of God' red card - in possible final appearance for boyhood club Santos

Neymar has begged fans to forgive him after he was sent off for a bizarre handball. The 33-year-old forward is now back at his boyhood club Santos following a difficult stint with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Santos suffered a 1-0 home defeat against reigning champions Botafogo on Saturday night to leave them 18th in the table after 11 matches. Their troubles worsened when captain Neymar was sent off after attempting a "Hand of God" imitation. At 75 minutes, with the match still goalless, the Botafogo goalkeeper palmed a cross into his path, and it struck him in the midriff. A defender was poised to reach the loose ball and clear it, but Neymar leapt forward and punched it into the net from close range. Neymar got a red card for trying to score with his hand 😭 — aless ✞ (@R9Futebol) June 1, 2025 However, the referee saw it and gave Neymar his marching orders having issued him a second yellow. And just 10 minutes later, Botafogo winger Artur Victor Guimaraes scored to condemn Santos to a seventh defeat of the season. Neymar posted on Instagram afterwards: 'I made a mistake, forgive me! Today, if i hadn't been sent off, I'm sure we would have gotten the three points. You can count these three points against me!' That could be Neymar's final act for the club, as his short-term contract is due to expire on June 30. He will miss the next game against Fortaleza due to suspension, and with the clash against Palmeiras not scheduled until July 12, his time with the club may already be over. The former Barcelona star hasn't matched the form of his first spell at Santos, missing eight games due to injury and netting just three goals in 11 appearances.

Ex-Liverpool chief outlines key detail as second Florian Wirtz bid rejected

Florian Wirtz is at the top of Liverpool's list of transfer targets but their first two bids for the German star have fallen short of Bayer Leverkusen's valuation Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has suggested the Reds will be looking to offload players to raise money before upping their bid for Florian Wirtz. Bayer Leverkusen have knocked back two bids for Germany star Wirtz, the second of which could have seen Liverpool pay north of £100million including add-ons. Wirtz has emerged as a major target as Arne Slot looks to add further quality to his Premier League winning squad. The Reds look to have fought off the challenge of Bayern Munich to install themselves as frontrunners, but they're still some way from Leverkusen's valuation of their star man. ‌ Moore, who was CEO between 2017 and 2020, worked with FSG when the owners sold Philippe Coutinho for a nine-figure sum in the same window the club completed a club record deal for Virgil van Dijk. "I think three or four key signings will be critical," he told talkSPORT. ‌ "There are going to be some hard decisions on players who are going to have to leave, and if Wirtz is real - I know my owners pretty well - then somebody is going to have to go to a) get the money [back] and b) make room in the payroll salary for that." The Reds have already brought in around £8.4million after allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid a few weeks early, but there could be more work to do. Slot's team have already added around £60m of new talent, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong joining this summer. When it comes to raising funds, though, there are a few contenders to be offloaded. ‌ Chief among that number is Caoimhin Kelleher, whose time looks to be up following Mamardashvili's arrival. The Irish international is a target for Brentford, and appears likely to net his club £18m. Darwin Nunez is another who could fetch a significant fee, with interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, while Barcelona and Al Nassr have their eye on Luis Diaz. If Liverpool do cash in on Colombia star Diaz, they can expect to turn a profit on a player who cost them north of £40m when he joined from Porto in 2022. ‌ Over the weekend, Diaz's partner Gera Ponce prompted speculation over the forward's future with an Instagram post. "To the incredible Liverpool fans. From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. "We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone," she wrote. "This fan doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. "Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. Being a part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. And he too reacted to Bamford's guitar-playing cameo. 4 The Kaiser Chiefs added to the party mood across the city BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK But it's just possible Viduka was referring to the hitman's kit rather than his musical ability as the Aussie posted: "What a privilege." Inside Leeds stars' wild title celebrations as Bamford and Ampadu 'leave Burnley fanbase in meltdown' with karaoke song Daniel Farke's side are returning to the Premier League after two seasons out. And many reckon Phillips will be making his own comeback - to Elland Road. The 29-year-old has had a dire three years away after joining Manchester City, typified by injury and then mediocre loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich. Phillips bigged up Bamford on Instagram as he responded to the star's rocking intervention by posting: "What an absolute legend". That's also the status Phillips had at his hometown club Leeds. But the anchorman he could be out for two months following surgery on an Achilles problem. And for now Wham Bam is the man - thanks to the Chiefs. One fan raved: "Crowd were amazing and a lot of fun was had! Cameo performance from P Bamford an absolute highlight!!' Another wrote: "Great day out at what was a mini-festival more than a gig.
