‘A perfect storm': How climate change made the LA wildfires more likely

Human-caused climate change worsened the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, a new study has found.
Fossil fuel burning reduced rainfall, dried out vegetation, and increased the overlap between flammable drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds, aggravating the blazes.
The study was carried out by 32 researchers, including leading wildfire scientists from the US and Europe.
They form part of World Weather Attribution, an academic group that has studied the influence of climate change on more than 90 extreme events around the world.
The scientists also warn that LA will get drier and more flammable with continued fossil fuel burning.
Climate change made LA wildfires 35% more likely
Extreme fires broke out around Los Angeles, California, on 7 January. Fanned by powerful Santa Ana mountain winds and burning through tinder-dry vegetation, the fires rapidly spread into urban areas.
They eventually killed at least 28 people, more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed, and millions are still being affected by toxic smoke. The fires are the most destructive in LA's history and potentially the costliest in US history.
The study found that the hot, dry and windy conditions that fuelled the LA fires were about 35 per cent (1.35 times) more likely due to climate change.
These fire-prone conditions will intensify if countries keep burning fossil fuels, the researchers warn.
At 2.6°C of warming, which is expected by 2100 under current scenarios, similar fire-weather in January will become a further 35 per cent more likely, making similar extremes about 80 per cent (1.8 times) more likely compared to the 1.3°C cooler preindustrial climate.
'Without a faster transition away from planet-heating fossil fuels, California will continue to get hotter, drier, and more flammable,' said Dr Clair Barnes, World Weather Attribution researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.
Climate change has extended fire-prone conditions in LA by 23 extra days a year
The researchers also found the LA wildfire season is becoming longer and more dangerous as fossil fuel emissions heat the climate.
Highly flammable drought conditions now last about 23 more days each year on average than in the preindustrial climate, an analysis of historical weather data found.
Due to highly variable rainfall, drought conditions can last much longer in some years, the scientists say.
October to December rainfall has historically brought an end to the wildfire season. But in recent decades, these rains have decreased.
Today, low rainfall across the three months is about 2.4 times more likely in neutral El Niño conditions, and a further 1.8 times more likely in La Niña conditions compared to the preindustrial climate.
The two weather phenomena influence the temperatures of the Pacific Ocean which can affect weather patterns around the globe.
Hotter air temperatures are also evaporating more moisture from plants, making them easier to burn.
'Drought conditions are more frequently pushing into winter, increasing the chance a fire will break out during strong Santa Ana winds that can turn small ignitions into deadly infernos,' explained Barnes.
LA wildfires: Climate change created a 'perfect storm'
The researchers note that while the individual results of these analyses show some degree of uncertainty, they point in the same direction, indicating that climate change increased the likelihood of the fires.
'This was a perfect storm of climate-enabled and weather-driven fires impacting the built environment,' said John Abatzoglou, Professor of Climatology at the University of California Merced.
'While Southern California is no stranger to high impact wildfires, the impact of these fires and the timing of these fires in the core of what should be the wet season differentiate this event as an extreme outlier.'
California needs better early warning and evacuation systems
The simultaneous occurrence of two major fires, driven by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds into urban areas, created chaotic and unpredictable conditions that overwhelmed more than 300 predeployed firefighters, the study highlights.
Improving the water system's ability to support large-scale firefighting efforts and making sure homes in high-risk zones adhere to defensible space buffer zone requirements will help to reduce the risk of repeat disasters, the researchers say.
They also emphasise the importance of early warning and evacuation systems as 17 of the 28 deaths occurred in West Altadena, a neighbourhood where warnings were delayed compared to other affected areas.
'These fires have highlighted just how vulnerable California is to winter wildfires, underscoring the need for better preparation for a more dangerous future,' said Roop Singh, Head of Urban and Attribution at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

"With every barrel of oil burned, every tonne of carbon dioxide released, and every fraction of a degree of warming, heat waves will affect more people," said Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London and co-author of the report. The analysis -- conducted by scientists at World Weather Attribution, Climate Central, and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre -- was released ahead of global Heat Action Day on June 2, which this year spotlights the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To assess the influence of global warming, researchers analyzed the period from May 1, 2024 to May 1, 2025. They defined "extreme heat days" as those hotter than 90 percent of temperatures recorded at a given location between 1991 and 2020. Using a peer-reviewed modeling approach, they then compared the number of such days to a simulated world without human-caused warming. The results were stark: roughly four billion people -- 49 percent of the global population -- experienced at least 30 more days of extreme heat than they would have otherwise. The team identified 67 extreme heat events during the year and found the fingerprint of climate change on all of them. The Caribbean island of Aruba was the worst affected, recording 187 extreme heat days -- 45 more than expected in a world without climate change. The study follows a year of unprecedented global temperatures. 2024 was the hottest year on record, surpassing 2023, while January 2025 marked the hottest January ever. On a five-year average, global temperatures are now 1.3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels -- and in 2024 alone, they exceeded 1.5C, the symbolic ceiling set by the Paris climate accord. The report also highlights a critical lack of data on heat-related health impacts in lower-income regions. While Europe recorded more than 61,000 heat-related deaths in the summer of 2022, comparable figures are sparse elsewhere, with many heat-related fatalities misattributed to underlying conditions such as heart or lung disease. The authors emphasized the need for early warning systems, public education, and heat action plans tailored to cities. Better building design -- including shading and ventilation -- and behavioral adjustments like avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat are also essential. Still, adaptation alone will not be enough. The only way to halt the rising severity and frequency of extreme heat, the authors warned, is to rapidly phase out fossil fuels.

Human-caused climate change added an average of 30 days of extreme heat for about half of the world's population over the past year, according to a new study. That amounts to four billion people exposed to prolonged, dangerous temperatures. And the findings single out fossil fuel emissions as the cause of the blistering heat. The study, published ahead of Heat Action Day on 2 June, comes from a collaborative attribution analysis by World Weather Attribution, Climate Central and the Red Cross Red Cross Climate Centre. Researchers examined temperature data from 247 countries and territories between May 2024 and May 2025 and found that, in 195 of them, climate change at least doubled the number of days classified as 'extreme heat.' 'This study needs to be taken as another stark warning. Climate change is here, and it kills,' says Dr Friederike Otto of Imperial College London and World Weather Attribution (WWA). To understand the influence of climate change, scientists first defined 'extreme heat' as days when temperatures exceeded the 90th percentile of the averages between 1991 and 2020. In other words, the hottest 10 per cent of days during that period. Then they tallied how many such days occurred in each country between May 2024 and May 2025. Next, they used climate models to simulate a world without human-induced warming. By comparing both sets of data, they were able to quantify just how many additional extreme heat days could be attributed directly to climate change. The difference was staggering. In many parts of the world, global warming didn't just increase temperatures. It made once-rare heatwaves a near-daily occurrence. Aruba, for example, suffered 187 days of extreme heat in the past year. Without climate change, the island's population would have endured just 45 such days. Researchers identified 67 extreme heat events globally last year. They focused on four: Central Asia in March 2025, South Sudan in February 2025, Mexico, the US and Central America in June 2024 and the Mediterranean in July 2024. In every case, they found that climate change made the back-breaking heat more likely or more severe. 'Climate change is clearly challenging life on every continent,' says Dr Mariam Zachariah, a WWA researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. 'These frequent, intense spells of hot temperatures are associated with a huge range of impacts, including heat illness, deaths, pressure on health systems, crop losses, lowered productivity and transport disruptions,' she adds. Europe is among the regions already suffering the most visible and deadly consequences of human-induced climate change. Last summer, wildfires and heatwaves swept through southern Europe. Scientists warned that climate change made them three times more likely. Greece endured deadly Juneheatwaves triggered by climate change that strained hospitals and caused mass evacuations from tourist destinations. Over the past two summers, extreme heat has led authorities to close the Acropolis – the country's most-visited site, attracting millions each year – during the hottest hours of the day. In July,southeastern Europe experienced its longest heatwave on record, lasting 13 consecutive days and affecting 55 per cent of the region. Prolonged heat in Spain, France and Italy caused transport disruptions, strained power grids and forced schools to shut early. In total, the record-breaking heat is thought to have killed more than47,000 people in Europe in 2024. The outlook continues to be grim, too. Climate experts project23 million additional temperature-related deaths in Europe by 2099 if warming continues unchecked. 'The evidence for the link between climate change and heatwaves is undeniable,' says Roop Singh, head of urban and attribution at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. 'Through our interactions, we know that people are feeling the rise in heat, but they don't always understand that it's being driven by climate change, and that it will continue to get much, much worse.' Despite the mounting pressure it places on global populations, heat remains one of the most underappreciated consequences of the climate crisis. Climate change was found to have caused41 additional days of dangerous heat in 2024, unleashing what researchers called 'unrelenting suffering' across the globe. That suffering isn't always exposure to extreme heat has been linked to accelerated ageing and damage at the cellular level. For the next generation, the picture is even more alarming. A recent study estimated that83 per cent of five-year-olds will live through far more frequent and intense heatwaves than any previous generation. 'There is no place on Earth untouched by climate change – and heat is its most deadly consequence,' said Dr Kristina Dahl, vice president for science at Climate Central. 'We have the science to quantify how fossil fuel emissions are reshaping our daily temperatures – and putting billions at risk.' The landslide that buried most of a Swiss village this week is focusing renewed attention on the role of global warming in glacier collapses around the world and the increasing dangers. How glaciers collapse - from the Alps and Andes to the Himalayas and Antarctica - can differ, scientists say. But in almost every instance, climate change is playing a role. In Switzerland, the mountainside gave way Wednesday near the village of Blatten, in the southern Lötschental valley, because the rock face above the Birch Glacier had become unstable when mountain permafrost melted, causing debris to fall and cover the glacier in recent years, said Martin Truffer, a physics professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks who studies how glaciers move. While the debris insulated the glacier and slowed melting, its weight caused the ice to begin moving - which accelerated dramatically a few weeks ago. Authorities ordered the evacuation of about 300 people, as well as all livestock, from the village in recent days, 'when it became clear that there's a whole mountainside that's about to collapse,' said Truffer, who is from Switzerland. Lakes that form at the base of glaciers as they melt and retreat also sometimes burst, often with catastrophic results. Water can even lift an entire glacier, allowing it to drain, said Truffer, adding that Alaska's capital of Juneau has flooded in recent years because a lake forms every year on a rapidly retreating glacier and eventually bursts. In 2022, an apartment building-sized chunk of the Marmolada glacier in Italy's Dolomite mountains detached during a summer heat wave, sending an avalanche of debris down the popular summer hiking destination, killing 11. A glacier in Tibet's Aru mountain range suddenly collapsed in 2016, killing nine people and their livestock, followed a few months later by the collapse of another glacier. There also have been collapses in Peru, including one in 2006 that caused a mini tsunami; most recently, a glacial lagoon overflowed in April, triggering a landslide that killed two. 'It's amazing sometimes how rapidly they can collapse,' said Lonnie Thompson, a glacier expert at the Ohio State University. 'The instability of these glaciers is a real and growing problem, and there are thousands and thousands of people that are at risk.' Scientists say melting glaciers will raise sea levels for decades, but the loss of inland glaciers also acutely affects those living nearby who rely on them for water for drinking water and agriculture. Scientists say greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal have already locked in enough global warming to doom many of the world's glaciers - which already have retreated significantly. For example, glaciers in the Alps have lost 50 per cent of their area since 1950, and the rate at which ice is being lost has been accelerating, with 'projections ... that all the glaciers in the Alps could be gone in this century,' Thompson said. Switzerland, which has the most glaciers of any country in Europe, saw 4 per cent of its total glacier volume disappear in 2023, the second-biggest decline in a single year after a 6 per cent drop in 2022. A 2023 study found that Peru has lost more than half of its glacier surface in the last six decades, and 175 glaciers disappeared due to climate change between 2016 and 2020, mostly due to the increase in the average global temperature. A study published Thursday in Science said that even if global temperatures stabilized at their current level, 40 per cent of the world's glaciers still would be lost. But if warming were limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius - the long-term warming limit since the late 1800s called for by the 2015 Paris climate agreement - twice as much glacier ice could be preserved than would be otherwise. Even so, many areas will become ice-free no matter what, Truffer, the University of Alaska expert. 'There's places in Alaska where we've shown that it doesn't take any more global warming,' for them to disappear, Truffer said. 'The reason some ... (still) exist is simply because it takes a certain amount of time for them to melt. But the climate is already such that they're screwed.'

To survive warming oceans, clownfish cope by shrinking in size. Scientists observed that some of the orange-striped fish shrank their bodies during a heat wave off the coast of Papa New Guinea. Fish that slimmed were more likely to survive. Heat waves are becoming more common and intense underwater due to climate change. Warmer water temperatures can bleach sea anemones that clownfish call home, forcing them to adapt to stay alive. Scientists monitored and measured 134 colorful clownfish in Kimbe Bay during an intense heat wave in 2023 that's still bleaching corals worldwide. They found that 101 clownfish decreased in length on one or more occasions from heat stress. 'We were really shocked at first when we saw that they were shrinking at all,' said study author Morgan Bennett-Smith with Boston University. The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances. Though scientists don't yet know how clownfish shrink, one idea is that they could be reabsorbing their own bone matter. It's possible the smaller stature may help the clownfish save energy during a stressful scorch since smaller fish need less food. Certain clownfish breeding pairs also synced their shrink to boost their survival odds. The females adjusted their size to stay bigger than their partners, keeping the female-dominated social hierarchy intact, researchers said. Other animals also decrease in size to beat the heat. Marine iguanas get smaller during El Niño events that usher warm waters into the Galapagos. But this coping strategy hadn't yet been spotted in coral reef fish until now. 'This is another tool in the toolbox that fish are going to use to deal with a changing world,' said Simon Thorrold, an ocean ecologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who was not involved with the new study. The tactic helps clownfish weather heat waves in the short-term, but it's not yet clear how the fish will fare if they have to keep it up in the years to come, Thorrold said. Researchers found the shrinking was temporary. Clownfish possessed the ability to 'catch up' and grow back when their environment got less stressful, showing how living things are staying flexible to keep up with a warming world, said study author Melissa Versteeg with Newcastle University. 'These natural systems really are under stress, but there's a capacity for incredible resilience,' Versteeg said. The creative, cobblestoned Dutch city of Breda has officially become the first National Park City in the European Union. Officially designated by the National Park City Foundation in May, Breda joins London, Adelaide and Chattanooga as the fourth member of a growing global movement to make urban areas greener, healthier and more connected to nature. This new status recognises more than a decade of work to restore wetlands, green its streets and bring residents into the process. It also signals a shift in how cities across Europe redefine their relationship with nature. The National Park City initiative was launched in the UK in 2019 to promote nature-connected, environmentally just urban living. Cities don't need to meet traditional national park criteria. Instead, they must show a city-wide commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and public access to green space. Breda's application caught the attention of assessors with its strong environmental leadership, citizen engagement and urban planning that places nature at its core. 'I absolutely loved exploring Breda and learning about all the things they are doing to make their city greener, healthier and wilder – from restoring a river through the middle of the city to innovative community food growing programmes, tiny forests set up by schools, wildlife-friendly gardens and public art,' says Daniel Raven-Ellison, founder of the National Park City Foundation. 'I am sure that people of all ages and backgrounds in Breda will be inspired by becoming a National Park City and want to explore how they can be part of its growth and story.' Breda is now the fourth city to earn National Park City status, joining London, Adelaide and most recently Chattanooga. Nine other cities are currently working towards it, too. Breda has long prioritised nature-based solutions, from transforming quaysides into biodiverse urban gardens to replacing concrete tiles with grass, flower beds and trees. Today, 60 per cent of Breda is made up of green space, from historic forests like the Mastbos – one of the oldest in the Netherlands – to nature reserves, parks and waterways. By 2030, local leaders aim to make it one of the most nature-rich cities in Europe. But the status also reflects a buy-in from residents. The city has become a leader in green design, using nature-based solutions to improve liveability and manage climate risks. And residents have been active participants in that process, often greening their own streets, installing rooftop gardens and developing green schoolyards, according to Breda Stad in een Park, a grassroots movement that helped to lead the city's efforts to become a National Park City. 'This title is a recognition for the many residents, entrepreneurs and organisations who are committed to greening Breda and an inspiration to continue doing so,' says Joost Barendrecht, chairman of Breda Stad in een Park. 'It's an incentive to make more [people] enthusiastic about getting started with greenery. It doesn't always have to be big. A [simple] garden is a nice contribution.' Across the EU, cities are increasingly stepping in the same direction as Breda. From car-free zones in Paris to flood-proofing efforts in Copenhagen, local leaders are responding to climate change and declining biodiversity with initiatives that aim to make urban settlements greener, more livable and future-ready. For example, access to green space significantly reduces heat-related health risks – a benefit Breda now exemplifies and other European cities might seek to emulate. 'London and Breda are the first National Park Cities in Europe, but there's no shortage of others that want and need to be greener, healthier, wilder, cooler and fairer,' says Raven-Ellison. 'National Park Cities are helping to show the way, forming strong relationships and exchanging optimism, ideas, knowledge and energy.'
