UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy Cools Attacks On BBC, Praising 'Big Strides' In Gripping Crises
Nandy has been highly critical of the BBC in a series of unusual interventions this month, including raising concerns about the leadership of director-general Tim Davie and questioning why no one had been fired over the How to Survive a Warzone debacle.

BBC Review Finds 'Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone' Broke Accuracy Rule In "Serious" Editorial Failure
In comments on Monday, Nandy said: 'My job is to make sure that we uphold the highest standards and that the public and parliament can have confidence in the BBC.
'I think, given the recent events, that has been called into question, but the BBC in recent weeks has made big strides to try to reset that relationship with the public, and show that they have grip on the very very serious issues.'
Her change of tone follows Deadline reporting on concerns about the culture secretary jeopardizing the BBC's independence by personally attacking Davie and repeatedly bypassing the corporation's governance conventions.
Nandy said it is 'not for the government to say who should and shouldn't work at the BBC,' but added that the broadcaster was right to acknowledge 'catastrophic failures' in recent weeks, not least live-streaming Glastonbury act Bob Vylan chanting 'death to the IDF.'
In a breathless day, the BBC published an internal report concluding that Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone committed a 'serious' breach of editorial rules by failing to declare that it was narrated by the child of a Hamas minister. Meanwhile, an independent report substantiated 45 misconduct allegations against former MasterChef host Wallace.
Following the Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone report, media regulator Ofcom has launched its own investigation into the documentary, produced by Hoyo Films. 'Having examined the BBC's findings, we are launching an investigation under our rule which states that factual programmes must not materially mislead the audience,' a spokesperson said.
Danny Cohen, the BBC's former television chief, suggested that an editorial leader should be fired over the documentary. 'The serious journalistic failings of this documentary have severely damaged public trust in the BBC. This is not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of systemic bias in the BBC's coverage of the war,' he said.
'The BBC's failure to recognise this and take real action is a serious leadership failure. This looks like a classic case of 'deputy heads must roll' and that is nowhere near good enough. As head of news Deborah Turness has questions to answer.'

‘Bend It Like Beckham 2' Is Reportedly ‘In the Works'
Lace up your cleats, fans! This week, writer and director Gurinder Chadha announced she is working on a sequel to the hit soccer film Bend It Like Beckham, released in 2002 and starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. 'I'm excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women's game,' Chadha told Deadline in an interview. Here's everything we know about the project so far. In the original film, Nagra plays a teen girl named Jasminder who loves both soccer and Manchester United's David Beckham. Unfortunately, her parents are very unenthusiastic about her engaging in sports. She ends up joining a girls's soccer team in secret, where she meets Jules, played by Knightley. There, she discovers just how great she can be while also learning to navigate first romances and friendship. Her success ultimately brings her closer to her family in an uplifting story about following your dreams. Since it's 23 years later, everyone would obviously be in a new time in their lives. Chadha says a sequel will also address the changes in women's sports. 'I didn't want to do anything because I didn't have a story,' she said of the time gap since the first film. 'And then I came up with a great story, really super-cool story. So now I'm inspired. Literally came up with it just about a month ago. It's my very clear wish to bring the characters back very, very soon. Women's football is more competitive, more exciting, and more global than ever. It is an honor for me to be a small part of it.' She wrote the original screenplay with Guljit Bindra and husband Paul Mayeda Berges. Aside from Nagra and Knightley, fans would expect the return of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the Hounslow Harriers team manager and Jasminder's love interest. But so far, no one is officially confirmed. Chadha stated that Nagra, Knightley, as well as cast members Archie Panjabi and Juliet Stevenson 'are aware that a sequel is being developed, but they obviously want to see a script before they commit.' 'I'm pretty certain that everyone's going to want to come back,' she added. 'Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes.' The goal for Chadha is to have the sequel out by 2027 for the original film's 25th anniversary, which will coincide with the FIFA Women's World Cup tournament in Brazil that year. This post will be updated.

Spice Girl Melanie C stuns on romantic island getaway with Australian model boyfriend
Spice Girl Melanie C – aka Sporty Spice – looks as fit as ever in these candid new vacation photos. The 90s pop legend, 51, escaped to the island of Mallorca for a romantic getaway with her partner, Australian actor and model Chris Dingwall. Advertisement The loved-up pair each shared a carousel of photos from the vacation on Instagram, with Melanie looking absolutely ripped in a tiny two-piece black bikini – and in another snap, relaxing on a boat while reading a book about the history of ecstasy use in dance music. 4 Spice Girl Melanie C shared photos from her romantic vacation with model Chris Dingwall. @melaniecmusic / Instagram Fans and friends were full of praise for the star in the comments section. 'Seeing Melanie look this healthy and happy melts my heart,' one longtime fan wrote. Advertisement 'Gorgeous to see you so happy and relaxed,' wrote UK broadcaster Kate Thornton. 'You're both so cute together. Love seeing you enjoying moments of love,' another fan gushed. 4 The pop singer captioned her Instagram carousel 'a slice of paradise.' @melaniecmusic / Instagram Dingwall is originally from Sydney but travels the world as a model signed to Ford Models and Chadwick. Advertisement The pair went public at Wimbledon in London last July, days after they were spotted walking hand-in-hand at the iconic Glastonbury festival. But they had been quietly dating for months before that: Melanie's frequent visits to our shores earlier in 2024, ostensibly for DJing gigs, also doubled as quality time with Dingwall as the pair shared romantic getaways in resorts across Brisbane, Byron Bay and the Whitsundays. 4 The 90s pop icon showed off her toned body in the photos. @melaniecmusic / Instagram Since those early days the pair have become more open about their relationship, with Melanie C even professing her 'love' for Dingwall on social media in January after he wished her a happy 51st birthday. Advertisement Furthering her Aussie connection, Melanie C will soon appear as one of the celeb coaches on the next season of Seven's music contest The Voice alongside Ronan Keating, Richard Marx and Kate Miller-Heidke. She was based in Bondi while she lived here to film the season, and also made a surprise appearance at a Sydney gay club in April, filming scenes for a new music video. 4 The couple first went public in July 2024. @melaniecmusic / Instagram Melanie C is undoubtedly the most private of the five Spice Girls when it comes to her love life, largely keeping her relationships out of the public eye since a string of romances with high-profile musicians. She has a teenage daughter from a longtime relationship with ex-partner Thomas Starr. The pair split in 2012 after a decade together. After that, Melanie dated her manager, Joe Marshall, for seven years before they split in 2022.

BBC local broadcasting 'legend' dies
Former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Gerry Kersey, who became a listeners' favourite during his 50 years in broadcasting, has died. The 86-year-old, who worked for both the BBC and independent radio, had been ill for some time and died on Friday morning with his wife, Christine, at his side. Paying tribute, Katrina Bunker, Head of BBC Yorkshire, said: "Gerry was a true legend of local broadcasting, starting his career in 1968 as one of the first voices on BBC Radio Sheffield." Away from the microphone, he had a talent for performing in theatre and for art. His paintings featured in exhibitions and he raised money for charity by making and selling Christmas cards featuring his work. In a 2018 interview in the Sheffield Star marking his 50 years in broadcasting, he recalled that in the 1970s he was doing two jobs, handling advertising for local company Stanley Tools and doing radio work. "It became an alarmingly unbalanced life," he told the newspaper. But broadcasting eventually won his heart. "I decided, with my wife's full approval, that although it was only earning £12 a week I would take it on and see what I could do," he said. It turned out well and Gerry became a listeners' favourite, both for the BBC and on independent station Radio Hallam. Ms Bunker said: "In later years he was known for request-based and nostalgia shows and he got loads of letters, emails and calls right up to his last show in 2020. "Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry's show. "Off-mic, Gerry was just as much of a gentleman as he was on it, always encouraging , always warm and proud to still be on the radio after 50 years. "He will be sadly missed by all who knew him."
