Central Railway plans to extend platforms at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for 15 car locals by Dec
The urgency follows last month's Mumbra mishap in which five commuters died after falling from overcrowded trains. Railway officials said the additional platforms will allow more 15-car operations, easing the severe crush load on the Kalyan–Thane section.
Currently, CR operates just 22 services with 15-car rakes, compared to Western Railway's 210. "We are extending platforms at 34 stations to enable 15-car services on the slow corridor too," said a senior CR official.

At present, only platform 7 at CSMT can berth a 15-car train, and it is also used to stable a rake during non-operational hours. "Once platforms 5 and 6 are extended, we can stable another 15-car rake. We have no dedicated stabling lines on the network except for half a line at Kalyan, which limits our ability to run more 15-car services," the official added.
A 15-car rake can carry about 25% more passengers than a 12-car rake — 4,380 against 3,504 — which CR hopes will significantly reduce overcrowding.

CR's 2017 blueprint proposed a two-phase expansion of the 15-car system beyond Kalyan. Phase I covers platform extensions on the Karjat line, serving fast-growing suburbs such as Ambernath and Badlapur, while Phase II targets the Kasara line, which includes Titwala and Asangaon. Currently, only Dombivli and Kalyan can handle 15-car trains beyond Thane.
Plans are also afoot to introduce semi-fast 15-car services that will run fast between CSMT and Thane, then switch to the slow corridor to serve Kalva, Mumbra, Diva, and Kopar — stations skipped by existing fast locals.

Railways plans to roll out Gati Shakti Freight trains for faster cargo movement
Indian Railways Freight Services: Indian Railways (IR) plays a crucial role in transporting bulk commodities which are essential for industry and energy sectors, food grains for national distribution, fertilizers for agriculture, and petroleum products. For long distances, rail transport has been more economical than road transport. It not only reduces overall logistics cost but also enables seamless supply chains across the country. Now, in a bid to boost the logistics sector, the Ministry of Railways is planning to introduce a Gati Shakti Freight train. This new semi-high-speed train will be manufactured at Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF). 'ICF is planning to introduce Gati Shakti Freight EMU, a semi-high-speed train for e-commerce and FMCG logistics, equipped with advanced container handling systems and crew amenities,' said U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF, on Friday while addressing the gathering on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day. The national transporter carries over 1.6 billon tonnes of freight traffic every year. Transporting freight by rail helps cut carbon emissions, lowers fuel costs and eases highway congestion. The freight carried by railways during 2020-21 was 1,233 million tonnes which increased to 1,591 million tonnes during 2023-24 i.e. a growth of 29 per cent. The railways has taken up construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) – Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 Km) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1506 Km). Out of total 2,843 Km, 2741 Route km (96.4%) have been commissioned and operational, which – carried 1,30,116 freight trains during FY 2024-25. In a written statement in Lok Sabha on July 23, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said: 'Indian Railways is working on increasing the capacity of its network through Corridors approach. Corridors like HDN (High Traffic Density), Energy, Minerals and Cement are being implemented on priority.'

Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here
Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here The central government is planning a major change in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, according to media reports. Under the proposal, there will be only two main GST slabs i.e. 5 per cent and 18 per cent. Around 90 per cent of the items currently in the 28 per cent slab will be shifted to the 18 per cent slab, and 99 per cent of the items in the 12 per cent slab will move to the 5 per cent slab. A special 40 per cent GST rate will be kept only for a few luxury and 'sin' goods like tobacco, gutkha, and cigarettes. This list will have just 5–7 items and will not include aspirational products such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. Petroleum products will continue to remain outside the GST system even after the changes. Sectors that are labour-intensive and export-oriented, such as diamonds and precious stones, will keep their existing tax rates. Officials say the overall tax collection level will stay roughly the same at about 88 per cent. They believe that lowering GST rates for most items will encourage people to spend more, which in turn will make up for any short-term loss in tax revenue. The plan is based on Union Finance Ministry data showing that most GST revenue comes from items in the 18% slab—about 67 per cent of the total. In comparison, the 28 per cent slab brings in 11 per cent, the 12 per cent slab 5 per cent, and the 5 per cent slab 7 per cent. This proposal comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, where he promised GST reforms as part of a 'double Diwali' for the country. The focus will be on rationalising tax rates so that all sections of society, especially the common man, women, students, the middle class, and farmers, benefit. Alongside this, the PM also announced other major initiatives, including a national deep-water exploration mission to boost energy self-reliance and the creation of an indigenous 'Sudarshan Chakra' defence system by 2035. The GST Council, which includes state finance ministers, is expected to review and possibly approve the proposal in September or October.

Jensen Huang sells $40 million of Nvidia shares under this trading plan he adopted in March: What is it
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has sold 201,404 company shares this week. According to a Form 4 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the transactions were made on August 11, 12 and 13, under a prearranged 10b5-1 trading plan that he adopted in March earlier this year. The shares were sold at price ranging from $180.026 to $183.6417, resulting in total proceeds of $40,959,534. Post these transactions, Huang still owns 72,998,225 shares. What is 10b5-1 trading plan under which Nvidia CEO sold shares Rule 10b5-1 is a regulation from the US SEC that lets insiders at public companies set up a plan to sell their shares ahead of time. Under this rule, major shareholders can schedule the sale of a fixed number of shares at a set time, helping them avoid accusations of insider trading. Many company executives use 10b5-1 plans for this reason. The rule was introduced to clarify Rule 10b-5, part of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, which is the main law used to investigate securities fraud. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mystical Forest Vase: Hot Sale topgadgetlife Shop Now Undo How much shares Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang now owns After the latest sell-off, Jensen Huang now owns 72,998,225 shares of Nvidia common stock.
