Dharmasthala case: No human remains found in latest excavation, SIT probe continues
According to news agency PTI, at the site, the SIT used two earthmovers to excavate an area 18 feet deep and 25 feet wide, removing over 20 tonnes of soil. This marked the deepest excavation carried out so far as part of the inquiry.

The team had earlier used a drone-mounted ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to scan the sub-surface before digging began. While officials have not yet released the analysis of the radar imagery, PTI sources said the high-capacity drone can detect sub-surface anomalies in real time.
The exhumation began at 11.30 am and continued until dusk, after which the site was refilled. It remains unclear whether other identified locations will undergo similar digging. 'Spot number 13' has been classified as a critical site in the SIT's investigation, the report added.
The operation was supervised by SIT chief Pranab Mohanty, who arrived in Mangaluru on Tuesday before heading to the SIT office in Belthangady. He was joined by SIT personnel and the Assistant Commissioner. The complainant and his legal counsel were also present during the GPR scan to ensure transparency.
The SIT is currently examining 16 identified sites in Dharmasthala based on anonymous tips. So far, none have yielded definitive evidence of mass graves, except for 'site number 6', where a half-broken human jawbone and several other bones were found.
Belthangady taluk authorities later verified the discovery, but the origin and age of the remains have not yet been determined.

Who is Sandeepa Virk? Instagram influencer under ED scanner
Sandeepa Virk, a popular Instagram personality who claims to be an actor and a cosmetologist, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the anti-money laundering law in a case of alleged fraud as well as misrepresentation, reports said on Wednesday, citing the agency. According to an Instagram ID of Sandeepa Virk, she is an actor and entrepreneur and the founder of a skincare product website Sandeepa Virk, is also under scanner for her purported links with Reliance Group executive, Angarai Natarajan Sethuraman (President, corporate affairs), according to a PTI news agency report. The money-laundering case stems from an FIR lodged by the Punjab Police. Who is Sandeepa Virk According to an Instagram ID of Sandeepa Virk, she is an actor and entrepreneur and the founder of a skincare product website which the ED claims was a "front" for money laundering. The Instagram handle, which also reads 'god's favourite child' in bio, has 1.2 million followers. Another social media-hosted bio data of the woman said she is a certified cosmetologist. The ED took Sandeepa Virk into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on Tuesday after searches were conducted against her and her associates in Delhi and Mumbai over the last two days, the PTI report said. Sandeepa Virk and her associates are being probed for allegedly exerting undue influence through "misrepresentation" and "defrauding" individuals by soliciting money under false pretences. A special court sent her to the ED's custody till August 14, the agency said. The agency said in a statement that the woman was also "in touch with" Sethuraman, former director of erstwhile Reliance Capital Limited and was was communicating with him regarding 'illegal liaisoning', The ED said searches at Sethuraman's residence "confirmed" these allegations. "Besides, diversion of funds for personal benefit has also been unearthed during the course of the search action," the report quoted ED as saying. The ED alleged that public money worth about ₹18 crore belonging to Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL) was disbursed to Sethuraman in 2018 by "flouting" prudent lending norms. The funds were lent under terms that allowed a deferment of the principal amount as well as the interest, with multiple waivers granted and no due diligence conducted, it said. In addition, a home loan of ₹22 crore was provided by Reliance Capital Limited by "violating" the prudential norms, ED claimed. "A large part of these loans are seen to have been eventually siphoned off and remained unpaid," it alleged. Sethuraman, in a statement, dismissed the allegations as 'baseless", denying any connection with Sandeepa Virk or any transactions related to her. Sethuraman said that the home loan he received from Reliance Capital was granted following due process and was secured by the property offered as collateral. Non-existent products Sandeepa Virk's web portal purportedly sold FDA-approved beauty products. however, the the things listed on the website have been found to be non-existent, ED said, adding that the portal lacks a user registration option and is plagued by persistent payment gateway issues. A scrutiny of the website revealed minimal social-media engagement, an inactive WhatsApp contact number and an absence of transparent organisational details, all of which suggested "non-genuine" commercial activity, according to the ED. "These factors, including limited product range, inflated pricing, false claims of FDA approval and technical inconsistencies, indicate that the website serves as a front for laundering funds," ED said. The federal agency said several "incriminating" documents were seized during the searches and the statement of a man named Farrukh Ali, stated to be an associate of Sandeepa Virk, was recorded.

State on high alert, Punjab Police carry out flag marches
Punjab Police have beefed up the security across the state, and all the field units have been directed to remain on high alert in the wake of Independence Day celebrations. (PTI) According to an official spokesman, police teams conducted flag marches at all the sensitive areas in all the 28 police districts simultaneously, followed by cordon and search operations (CASOs) at all the vulnerable spots. Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said that police teams led by CPs/SSPs conducted flag marches in the sensitive and vulnerable areas of their respective districts. 'The exercise was aimed to boost the confidence of the general public, besides preparing police personnel to tackle any untoward situation,' he said. Shukla said that the CPs/SSPs were also directed to conduct a special cordon and search operation (CASO) under the supervision of a SP-rank officer at all the crowded places, including railway stations, bus stands, markets, shopping malls, public parks, etc, across the state. 'We had strictly instructed all the Police personnel to deal with every person in a friendly and polite manner while frisking them during the course of this operation,' he added. He said that around 250 teams, involving over 1,500 police personnel, were deputed across the state to look for suspicious persons in the state, while ensuring minimum inconvenience to the general public. Apart from this, cops have continued their cordon and search operation (CASO) against drugs on Day 165, and conducted raids at 374 locations on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of 73 drug smugglers after registration of 53 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this, the total number of drug smugglers arrested has reached 25,719 within 165 days. The Special DGP said that the raids have resulted in the recovery of 2.4 kg of heroin and ₹42,800 drug money from the possession of arrested drug smugglers.
