Amit Shah's remarks on use of English language just his opinion, says Palaniswami
COIMBATORE: After Union Home Minister Amit Shah said a time will come soon when those speaking English in the country would 'feel ashamed', AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said that was just Shah's opinion.
'His remarks were on the basis that people are giving importance to English instead of their mother tongue, and that mother tongue is important for each of them,' Palaniswami said.
Addressing media persons at the Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday, he said, 'The people of Tamil Nadu will punish the DMK in the 2026 Assembly election. We have already condemned the DMK minister and DMK functionaries for their abusive speech. DMK functionaries have a habit of spreading abusive messages during public meetings, and on their social media handles,' said Palaniswmi.
Further, he said former minister and AIADMK deputy propaganda secretary K Pandirajan had clearly explained about what the AIADMK government did about the Keezhadi excavation when J Jayalalithaa was the chief minister, and after her death.
Palaniswami also extended his greetings to Hindu Munnani, organisers of the Lord Murugan conference at Madurai. 'It is a democratic right for an organisation to worship gods that are dear to them, and based on that right, an organisation is holding a religious conference.'
Speaking about International Yoga Day, he said 'Yoga is important for physical and mental wellbeing, and I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organising the event.'

My heartfelt gratitude to each one of you whose enthusiasm and unwavering dedication made this historic milestone possible,' he wrote. The MoS stated that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, yoga has become a global movement, uniting minds, bodies, and hearts across the world. 'The Yogandhra world record is not just a number, it's a celebration of India's timeless wisdom and the strength we possess when we come together for a shared purpose. Also Congratulations to the people of Andhra Pradesh as well! Together, we've made Brand Vizag shine on the world map,' he added. Earlier, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said that this achievement belongs to every citizen of Andhra Pradesh. A total of 3,00,105 people participated in the event organised by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. This set the record for the largest yoga lesson ever. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the event by performing the Common Yoga Protocol with the participants on RK Beach. He was joined by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, and Central and state ministers. The event was held on a 28 km stretch from RK Beach to Bhogapuram. It broke the record set in 2023 in Surat, which hosted a Yoga session with 1.47 lakh participants at one location. 'I thank each and every one of you who made this possible. Your enthusiasm and dedication have been truly inspiring. This record shows what we can accomplish when we unite with a purpose. Congratulations to everyone!' wrote CM Naidu on X. 'And we did it! Heartfelt thanks to all the participants, TDP leaders and cadre, government officials, and everyone who contributed to achieving this remarkable feat,' posted Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh.

Delhi CM leads yoga on banks of Yamuna, vows clean-up
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday performed yoga on the banks of the Yamuna River on the occasion of International Yoga Day, taking a swipe at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. She said her act aimed to highlight her administration's commitment to cleaning the river - something she alleged the AAP government failed to do despite years of promises. Besides the CM, her ministerial colleagues, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Mayor, and others participated in yoga sessions at various locations across the national capital. The Delhi government organised programmes at 11 prominent locations in the city to mark the occasion, with ministers, MLAs, and BJP MPs actively participating in the celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, the CM emphasised that Yoga Day should not be seen as a one-day event but rather as a lifestyle choice. 'A healthy citizen is the foundation of a prosperous nation,' she said, reiterating that turning Delhi into the health capital of the country is a shared responsibility. On choosing the Yamuna bank as the venue, she said, 'The purpose was to show people that the cleaning work of the river is underway. Yamuna is a symbol of our faith, but the previous governments ignored it. They did not work to clean it. But in the four months that we have been in power, we have made significant efforts toward its rejuvenation.' Targeting the AAP, Gupta said the previous government chose not to celebrate Yoga Day because of its association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'If they associate yoga with Prime Minister Modi, what can we do? Tomorrow, he might leave his food too if it's linked to the PM. After seeing the BJP government in Delhi, he left the national capital,' she remarked.

Throwback to Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan lending heartfelt support to Thalapathy Vijay's film, Sarkar.
Despite getting mixed reactions, Thalapathy Vijay 's movie Sarkar was released in cinemas in 2018 and gained wide acclaim. The movie quickly garnered the attention of the audience and went on to gross Rs. 256 crores worldwide. When the movie was released, many AIADMK ministers and party cadres expressed their displeasure over certain scenes in the film. Several party cadres even went on to protest outside various theaters in Tamil Nadu and indulged in damaging the banners of the film and cutouts of Vijay. They demanded that certain scenes from the movie be removed immediately. Later, in an act of camaraderie and support, legendary actors Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan lashed out on their Twitter platforms, condemning the behavior and unlawful acts of violence, such as damaging the film's banners and Vijay's cutouts. Rajinikanth lashed out against these acts. He took to Twitter and wrote in Tamil, "To protest for the removal of certain scenes from the movie and stop it from being screened after the Censor Board has certified it is against the law. I strongly condemn this act." Actor-politician Kamal Haasan had also strongly objected to the actions of the AIADMK government regarding the issue. "It isn't new for this government to act and pressurize against a film like Sarkar, which has completed its censor formalities properly. A government that can't face criticism can go off on a tangent. Commercialized politicians will soon vanish, and the good people will win," Haasan tweeted. In the film, Vijay plays an NRI who returns to India to vote, only to realize his vote has been cast illegally. He then digs deep into the matter, stirring up a political turmoil. Actor Thalapathy Vijay was last seen on the silver screen with his blockbuster movie, Greatest of All Time (released in 2024). He has decided to lean into politics after the completion of his next big project. One of the most anticipated movies of the actor, Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, is scheduled to release on 9th January, 2026.
