Federations seeks ban on Murugan devotees' meet in Madurai
Madurai: The Madurai Madha Nallinakka Makkal Koottamaippu (Madurai Religious Harmony People's Federation), a federation of 40 civil society organisations, submitted a petition to district collector M S Sangeetha on Monday seeking a ban on the Murugan devotees' conference scheduled for June 22 at Amma Thidal. The federation alleged that the event, organised by outfits like Hindu Munnani, promotes communal tension under the guise of spirituality. In their representation, the collective expressed concern that the conference could disturb Madurai's tradition of religious harmony and inflame communal sentiments. The petition pointed to past incidents of unrest, including those in Thiruparankundram, as examples of how such events led to tensions in the region. The federation urged authorities not to permit programmes that might incite discord in the name of faith. The federation also announced plans to organise a 'People's Unity Conference' on June 29 at Obulapathithurai. The event will focus on fostering inclusive worship, communal harmony, and interfaith understanding. The organisers also requested the district administration to ensure equal application of the law and permit their event as a peaceful counterpoint.

Thug Life To Vishwaroopam And Uttama Villain: When Kamal Haasan's Films Sparked Row
Last Updated: Kamal Haasan sparked controversy at the Thug Life audio launch event. However, this is not the first time that the actor is facing criticism ahead of his film's release. Kamal Haasan has landed in a big controversy once again. Recently, the South superstar attended the Thug Life audio launch event in Chennai, where he made a statement linking the origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. The actor's remarks quickly went viral and has triggered backlash from pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka. They are not only demanding an apology from Haasan but also a ban on his upcoming movie. However, this is not the first time that Kamal Haasan has sparked a controversy ahead of his film's release. Previously too, his films like Vishwaroopam and Uttama Villain faced a massive backlash for various reasons. Here are some of Kamal Haasan's film controversies you must know about: Vishwaroopam (2013) Kamal Haasan's 2013 film faced opposition from Muslim groups for allegedly portraying their community negatively. The film was banned in Tamil Nadu and also saw massive protests in some other states for allegedly hurting Muslim sentiments. However, the Tamil Nadu ban was also lifted later after Kamal Haasan agreed to make some cuts to the film. The film's makers had also issued a statement clarifying that they did not intend to hurt anybody. Uttama Villain (2015) The Tamil Nadu branch of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad filed a lawsuit against the filmmaker, demanding a ban on the film, claiming it hurts the sentiments of the Hindu religion. The group objected to the lyrics of one of the songs, arguing it belittled a conversation between Prahlad and Hiranyakashipu. Directed by Ramesh Aravind and produced by N. Linguswamy and Kamal Haasan, the film faced controversy due to these allegations. Dasavatharam (2008) Kamal Haasan's magnum opus, Dasavatharam, faced controversies for depicting the clash between Saivism and Vaishnavism. The film was reportedly scrutinised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Munnani for its portrayal of the conflict between Shaivite and Vaishnavite saints during the 16th century AD. Both Hindu groups allegedly threatened to halt the movie's screening by protesting outside theatres. Vasool Raja MBBS (2004) Starring Prabhu alongside Kamal Haasan, this film was a remake of Munna Bhai MBBS. However, it drew criticism from the Indian Medical Association. The doctors found the film's title disrespectful and demanded a change. The Tamil Nadu Medical Council president, K R Balasubramanian, had also argued that the title mocked the medical profession and tarnished the fraternity's reputation. First Published:

PIL in Madras High Court challenges Coimbatore Collector's NOC to a new mosque
A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed in the Madras High Court to quash a No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by the Coimbatore Collector on December 3, 2024 for the functioning of a newly-constructed mosque at Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore city. The PIL petition is expected to be listed for hearing before a summer vacation Bench of Justices N. Mala and G. Arul Murugan on Wednesday. R. Prabakaran, an office-bearer of Hindu Munnani, had filed the petition in his personal capacity. In his affidavit, the petitioner stated that Grace Charitable Trust had constructed a mosque titled Masjid-e-Hira at Kuniyamurthur to Sundakkamuthur Road without obtaining an NOC from the Collector as required under the law. Hence, he submitted representations to the police as well as the Collector in March 2024. He had also filed a writ petition in the High Court last year seeking a direction to the Collector to conduct an inquiry regarding the illegal construction and prevent it from being used as a mosque. The court had ordered notice to the officials on June 11, 2024 and the writ petition was still pending. In the meantime, the Collector had considered an application filed by the management of the mosque in March 2024 and granted the NOC in December 2024. In his proceedings, the Collector had stated to have taken the decision on the basis of reports received from the Commissioner of Police and the Coimbatore South Revenue Divisional Officer. The Commissioner had said that the law and order intelligence branch of the city police had no objection to the functioning of the mosque in the locality. Similarly, the RDO had stated that 90% of the residents in the locality were Muslims and that 150 people from nearby localities would also be using the mosque for prayers. He also opined that the mosque may not lead to law and order problems. After considering both the reports, the Collector had granted the NOC on condition that the mosque should not cause hindrance to the day-to-day lives of the common people, obtain building plan approval from the Coimbatore Corporation, should not use cone speakers, not cause trafic jams due to parking of vehicles on the road, and not create any kind of law and order problem. Assailing the Collector's proceedings, the petitioner claimed that there were no Muslim residents in the locality and that the mosque had been constructed only for outsiders. 'Because of the unruly behaviour of the outsiders coming to the mosque in our area, the public peace and tranquility is being disturbed,' he said.

‘People should take part in Murugan conference en masse'
To stress the State government about various needs of Murugan devotees, people should take part in the Murugan conference en masse to be held in Madurai on June 22, said Hindu Munnani general secretary M. Muruganandham. Speaking to the press following a preparatory meeting for the conference here on Saturday, he said that the particular stretch of the road from Karaikudi to Palani should be made five-way to facilitate the devotees who would be undertaking 'padayatra' to the temple. The conference would press for other demands such as a separate road to Tiruchendur for devotees to use during 'Vaikasi visakam' and other festivals, he added.
