The burial ground cum crematorium is run by the corporation.
The city police detained them for conducting an unauthorised protest and let them off later.
The protesters alleged that corporation officials were deliberately using a portion of the Hindu burial ground for establishing an STP while sparing those for minorities. The protesters demanded that officials halt the STP construction. They said they had already petitioned the corporation commissioner to stop it.
The corporation is constructing three new STPs as part of underground drainage projects. One of them is in Chokkampudur.
The protesters alleged that despite submitting multiple petitions to the district collector and the corporation administration regarding the STP construction on the Chokkampudur burial ground, no action had been taken.
Hindu Munnani state executive committee member S Satish said, "The corporation is negligent in protecting Hindu rights concerning crematoriums and burial grounds. Many Hindu burial grounds are being repurposed, including the one in Sugunapuram where they are planning to construct a new garbage transfer station. The burial ground in Kallamedu was encroached upon by an individual who exhumed more than 60 graves, hurting people's sentiments.
"
The protesters highlighted that the proposed STP site in Chokkampudur is adjacent to a govt school where more than 1,000 students study. They expressed concerns about the potential health hazards to children and the public.

"If Cow Statue Can Enter Parliament, Why Not A Living Cow?": Shankaracharya
Mumbai: Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand has said that a cow should have been taken into the new Parliament building at Central Vista during its inauguration. "If a statue of a cow can enter Parliament, why can't a living cow be taken inside?" he asked reporters on Sunday. The seer said the Sengol held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi while entering the new Parliament building showed a cow engraved on the sceptre. "A real cow should have also been taken into the building to bestow blessings. If there is a delay, we will take cows from all over the country and bring them to Parliament," he said, adding this would ensure the PM and the building receive blessings of a real cow. The Sengol is installed in the Lower House of the Parliament. He also demanded that the Maharashtra government immediately frame a protocol on cow felicitation. "The state has not yet declared how to honour the cow. It should finalise a protocol so that people can follow it, and also fix penalties for its violation," he said. The Shankaracharya demanded that every assembly constituency in India have a "Ramadham" — a cow shelter accommodating 100 cows. "A total of 4,123 Ramadhams will be built across the country. The shelters will focus on daily cow service, protection, and promoting indigenous breeds," he added. Those following the protocol while caring for cows would be financially rewarded. "A person taking care of 100 cows will receive Rs 2 lakh per month," he added. The Hindu pontiff further said that the Dharma Sansad has passed a congratulatory resolution in support of Hoshangabad MP Darshan Singh Chowdhary, who has demanded that the cow be declared as Rashtramata (Mother of the Nation). The Shankaracharya said people should support only those candidates who protect cows and work for legislation in their interest. "The present regime has not yet satisfied us. Cow slaughter must be completely stopped in India," he added. Addressing the language controversy, he said, "Hindi was first recognised for administrative use. The Marathi-speaking state was formed in 1960, and Marathi was recognised later. Hindi represents several dialects — the same applies to Marathi, which has borrowed from its dialects." The seer said any violence should be treated as a criminal offence. He demanded justice in the Malegaon blast case, stating that the real culprits must be punished. "It is ridiculous that the government is celebrating Amrit Kaal while cows who provide us with milk are being slaughtered. Those in government cannot be called our brothers unless they stand in support of cows," he said. PTI ND NSK ARU

Do not politicise my meeting with Stalin, says O. Panneerselvam
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Monday rejected speculations about his likely association with the ruling DMK and further maintained his objective was to form Amma's government in the 2026 Assembly poll. He clarified that his recent comments on the Centre not releasing funds for Tamil Nadu under the Samagra Shiksha programme were not new, and he had flagged this as early as in August 2024. In a statement, Mr. Panneerselvam termed as 'indecent' the attempts by some to politicise his visit to Mr. Stalin's residence. 'The meeting was not related to politics,' he contended.'It is in the culture of the Tamils to visit and enquire about the well-being of someone, who has been under treatment in a hospital and has returned home, and to extend condolences if there is a loss in the family,' he said in a statement. Recalling his visit to the Chief Minister's residence, Mr. Panneerselvam explained that he visited only to enquire about the health of Mr. Stalin and express condolences over the passing of the latter's brother M.K. Muthu. He also rejected contentions and speculations which termed him as 'DMK's Team B', and he was about to forge an alliance with the DMK and maintained there was 'not even an iota of truth in it'. He recalled in June that he had condemned the Hindu Munnani over remarks made against late leaders Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. 'I have also condemned former BJP leaders who criticised Amma [former CM Jayalalithaa]. I have also recorded my support for the two-language policy,' he asserted. Mr. Panneerselvam added: 'I also directed to vote against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. Irrespective of wherever I am, I will walk on the path laid down by Amma for the rights and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.'
