Ronnie O'Sullivan's 'three years' admission in first snooker win since wedding says it all

Ronnie O'Sullivan's 'three years' admission in first snooker win since wedding says it all

Daily Record6 days ago
Ronnie O'Sullivan's form was impacted by his mental health reaching a low point earlier this year - but he claimed his first win since his wedding this week and is now feeling like his former self
Ronnie O'Sullivan believes he just delivered his best snooker performance in three years at the Shanghai Masters.

The Rocket this week beat Barry Hawkins 6-5 in the last 16 of the tournament. He overcame a nervy start to the match to take a 5-3 lead before Hawkins recovered to level at 5-5, only for the seven-time world champion to clinch the final frame.

O'Sullivan claimed afterwards that it was the best he has played since his 2022 world title win. And it is no coincidence that, for a player whose biggest competition in snooker has often been himself, he is playing so well when things are going well away from the sport.

Last month, the 49-year-old married long-term partner Laila Rouass in east London. The couple had announced their separation last September, ending their 13-year on-off relationship before rekindling their romance.
Footballers' Wives star Laila, 54, took to Instagram to share a picture of her and the snooker legend smiling outside St George's Town Hall in Shadwell, east London, with confetti being thrown on them.
It is clear to see the psychological boost O'Sullivan has received as a result, having taken a three-month absence from snooker earlier this year due to concerns over his health and wellbeing, and frustrations with his game, which infamously led him to snap his favourite cue in January.
O'Sullivan said after beating Hawkins in what was his first win since his wedding: 'I'm just pleased to have won the match. Barry played pretty good.
'I played probably the best I have played for maybe since I won the World Championship in 2022. That was a good performance. I could have lost it as well.

'The table played OK with the humidity. I don't know how it will be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday but if it stays the same, it's good.
'Usually it gets harder and harder as the week goes on. Who knows? If it stays like this, it's OK.' No. 6 seed O'Sullivan will now play Kyren Wilson in the quarter-finals.
His resurgence comes despite him expressing doubts in April over whether he could rediscover his best form. O'Sullivan very much appeared to have fallen out of love with the sport ahead of this year's World Championship, where he suffered a 17-7 semi-final defeat to Zhao Xintong.
Despite that, he insisted he was not ready to quit snooker just yet, giving himself a timeframe of between two to four more years 'to try and figure it out'. He said: "I have to try and repair myself and just try and find how I used to play snooker.
'It's a massive rebuilding process and probably the last one I'll ever have to do as a snooker player. Do I think I can do it? Probably not if I'm being honest."
Fans of the Rocket will hope he has put that all behind him now, with O'Sullivan appearing re-energised and seemingly benefitting from a healthy romantic life.

He played a starring role as United went undefeated in their group before losing 1-0 to Southampton Under-16s in Sunday's final at the Coleraine Showgrounds. Wayne and Coleen were in the crowd as Saints wonderkid Jude Daniels stole the glory before whipping out Wazza's famous knockout celebration. But despite being on summer break from school, Kai has been invited to compete in an international tournament against opponents three years his senior. Gabriel, signed by Nike at the age of 11, became the youngest player to feature for the Under-18s in April after making his debut against Leeds United, scoring twice after coming on as a substitute. The centre forward turns 15 in October so will be eligible to play in the Prem, with Arsenal rival starlet Max Dowman also in line with a shout. Both Gabriel and Dowman are in with a chance of becoming the youngest player to ever grace the top-flight. The current record is held by Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, who was 15 years and 181 days when he played against Brentford in September 2022. 7 JJ Gabriel is another star expected to feature on the tour

Son Heung-min completes move to Los Angeles from Tottenham in MLS record deal

Son Heung-min has ended his 10-year stay at Tottenham after making the 'hardest decision ever' to leave for Los Angeles FC in a record Major League Soccer transfer. It was revealed on Saturday that Son would depart Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances and months after he captained the club to Europa League glory. After an agreement between Tottenham and LAFC was struck for a deal in excess of £20million, the 33-year-old arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday and a day later he has finalised his transfer, which is the highest fee paid by an MLS club for a player. In a post to Spurs fans on Instagram, Son, who has signed an initial two-year deal with LAFC with options for a further two, wrote: 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go. 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. Dear Spurs fans… Sonny's letter to you 🤍 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 6, 2025 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour.' Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. After a tough debut campaign the South Korea captain went on to become one of the club's best ever players and made himself a Premier League great in the process. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Son HeungMin(손흥민)🇰🇷 (@hm_son7) Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. The Chuncheon-born attacker also won the league's Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season after scoring 23 times and he sits 17th in the list of all-time scorers in the division with 127 goals. Under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, Son's consistent displays helped turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders but silverware continued to allude them after a second-placed finish in 2017 was followed by a Champions League runner-up spot two years later. Whilst various members of Pochettino's team left not long after the Argentinian's winter departure in 2019, Son stayed to work under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte before he was tasked with leading a new era by Ange Postecoglou. Postecoglou named Son as his captain in the wake of Kane's high-profile switch to Bayern Munich and Hugo Lloris' departure from the first team and after a roller coaster two seasons under the Australian, they achieved the holy grail together on May 21. Son was consigned to a place on the bench in Bilbao for the Europa League final against Manchester United following an injury-affected campaign, but was introduced to make his final competitive appearance for Spurs to help them win 1-0 and end a 17-year wait for silverware. It etched Son's name into the history books as he became only the fourth captain in Spurs' history to lift a European trophy after Danny Blanchflower, Alan Mullery and Steve Perryman.
