‘You feel that responsibility': How Ebon Moss-Bachrach juggled The Bear and Marvel's Fantastic Four

News.com.aua day ago
He may not be the loudest name on the poster, but Ebon Moss-Bachrach might just be Marvel's most inspired casting choice yet.
Known for his raw, emotionally charged performance in the Emmy-winning series The Bear, the 48-year-old New Yorker is stepping into an entirely different kind of chaos, playing Ben Grimm, also known as The Thing, in Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
With the film marking the official kick-off to phase six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, anticipation has been off the charts.
But while much of the early buzz has swirled around big ticket names like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, it's Moss-Bachrach's grounded, gritty take on a rock-covered superhero that's shaping up to be one of the film's most intriguing talking points.
'I really wanted to try to honour and fight for the character,' he says from a Sydney hotel during the film's global press tour.
'You feel that responsibility, and you feel how much it means to people and that's inspiring.
'I wanted to give it as much dignity and strength as I could, and you have to inhabit them the best you can. As soon as you start making [it], as soon as you're in the scene, all that kind of stuff goes away. There's no time for that, to think about those things.'
After a dodgy unreleased effort in 1994, two moderate successes in 2005 and 2007 and a big-budget bomb in 2015, this iteration of Marvel Comics' much loved characters is styled with a retro-futuristic lens and set in an alternate 1960s-inspired universe.
Alongside Moss-Bachrach is Joseph Quinn, fresh off his Stranger Things fame, playing Johnny Storm (also known as the Human Torch).
Following in the footsteps of Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan in the original films, Quinn acknowledged the high expectations, but insisted this version stands on its own.
'I don't think any interpretation of any character is in opposition to any previous interpretation,' Quinn says.
'I think, in its very nature, it is going to be different because it's coming from a different actor.'
He recalled watching the 2005 and 2015 adaptations growing up. 'Chris Evans so brilliantly played Johnny Storm in those films … it's just, this is a new chapter, and it's a new interpretation and I'm very excited to be a part of it.'
But while Quinn may be newer to the scene, Moss-Bachrach has been slowly and deliberately building a career that spans indie dramas, off beat comedies, and period pieces.
From early appearances in John Adams and Girls, to acclaimed turns in series like The Punisher, Moss-Bachrach's resume reads like a masterclass in restraint and emotional nuance.
His portrayal of Richie in The Bear has been lauded by critics for capturing vulnerability, rage, grief, and joy in one character and even earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He was nominated again this week for the same role in the most recent season.
This year, Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been just about everywhere.
Between The Bear and Fantastic Four, he has barely had time to slow down, though he did manage the occasional breather.
'We shot this movie for a long time,' Moss-Bachrach says, referring to Fantastic Four: First Steps.
'I did have a little bit of a break, but there was also a period of time when I was on double duty and going back and forth between Chicago and London, where we shot Fantastic Four.'
He described the contrast between his two biggest projects.
'The Bear is a small set. It's mostly in one location. It's very much actor and writer driven,' he says.
'And this … we're such a sort of small bit. There's so many other departments on this, with visual effects and so much. We're [part of] such a bigger world.'
Despite the difference in scale, the emotional foundation remained key.
For Moss-Bachrach, the success of the film hinged on the family dynamic between the four leads.
'It's been an absolute dream,' he explains.
'It's been so nice. You know, there's just four of us. We have a lot of love between us. I think if even one of us was sort of outside, the movie wouldn't work the way it does. And I think if the movie does work, a large part of that is because of the respect and love and admiration that we share.'
Quinn echoes the sentiment. 'While there are many bright things about this process, that's been, the overriding gift of it is being able to spend time with Ebon, Vanessa, and Pedro.'
The chemistry between the cast appears to be a driving force behind the film's tone, a blend of nostalgia, emotional intimacy, and superhero spectacle.
'So much of the nostalgia is delivered through the art department and the writing and the circumstances and the sets and everything,' Moss-Bachrach says.
'I think our jobs are really to try to bring … our hearts and bring our openness and vulnerability and share in this and our love for each other as a family. I feel like that was our job.'
As Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps prepares to hit cinemas on July 25, anticipation is sky high.
The franchise has long been a cornerstone of Marvel lore, introducing Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm to the comic world in 1961, and now it's been re-imagined for a new era.
Pedro Pascal leads as Mister Fantastic, with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, and a tight knit cast is what fans are hoping is finally the successful launch the franchise deserves.
Meanwhile, Joseph Quinn has had no shortage of high profile roles, including a spot in Gladiator II, but he insists it hasn't gone to his head.
'No, it doesn't [feel like things have gone into hyperspeed]. I feel grateful. I feel grateful to be working with people that I admire.'
As for Moss-Bachrach, after juggling two wildly different productions and emerging as a central figure in both, he is ready to take a breath.
After all the madness, he's got one thing on his mind – a holiday.
'I'm going to Greece with my family,' Moss-Bachrach says with a smile.

Tszyu vs Fundora 2: Card rocked by world title medical emergency as Tszyu eyes history

Sixteen years after watching Manny Pacquiao fight Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand, Tim Tszyu is primed to become a two-time world champion at the very same venue in the co-main event to the Filipino legend. Tszyu hit the scales in phenomenal shape at 153.2 pounds for his WBC world title rematch with Sebastian Fundora (152.6 pounds), but the card was thrown into turmoil by the late withdrawal of Mexican star Angel Feirro. Fierro fell ill during his weight cut and was hospitalised just hours before he was due to weigh in for the highly anticipated rematch with Isaac Cruz. One of Mexico's biggest boxing stars, 'Pitbull' Cruz will now face Omar Salcido, who was scheduled to appear on the undercard. Meanwhile, Tszyu received one of the biggest cheers of the day when he stepped on the scales and motioned to his stomach, indicating a belt being strapped around his waist. 'WBC, the belt and I was just trying to vibe with the crowd,' Tszyu said just moments after he weighed in in front of a raucous crowd packed with Aussie, Filipino and Mexican boxing fans. 'It's pretty unreal to have that crowd and feel that energy. 'I understand why Manny comes back and does this over and over again. When you've got this every fight, it's hard just to kick back at home. 'I was sitting over there, just where the walk out is (when Pacquiao fought Cotto). That was a sick experience, now to be participating in it, it's unreal.' Tszyu was wearing a brand new necklace with the image of his beloved bulldog, Pablo, who recently needed surgery on a brain infection. 'He's the warrior,' he told Code Sports, while showing off the bling. 'The warrior.' Meanwhile, Pacquiao performed some mind games with Barrios, making the WBC welterweight champion wait four-and-a-half minutes on stage before showing up. Company launches investigation after executives caught canoodling in Coldplay kiss cam

Things could be about to get a whole lot worse for the canoodling couple who were potentially caught cheating when a kiss cam zoomed in on them at a Coldplay concert. The company they both work for has confirmed it is launching an investigation into the matter. The incident, which has since gone global, occurred at the British super group's gig in Boston, USA, on Wednesday. The camera zoomed in on the couple happily in a romantic embrace. But their faces turned from contentment to horror when they realised the whole stadium could see them. Both then fled, making concert-goers wonder why they were so determined not to be seen. The couple have been identified Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot. Mr Byron is the CEO of a billion-dollar New York based AI and data company Astronomer while Ms Cabot is the company's chief human resources officer. One X user claimed that Mr Byron's wife had dropped her married name from her Facebook profile, and didn't restrict people from making comments. Her page was flooded with users reacting to the Coldplay concert clip before she deleted her profile. She had multiple images on her social media of her and her husband and two teenagers presumed to be their sons. Ms Cabot is not married. Company launches investigation On Friday, US time, Astronomer said it had started a 'formal investigation' following the furore. 'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,' a statement on LinkedIn stated. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. 'The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly.' The company stressed the only employees at the concert were the pair after claims they were with fellow staff. 'Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.' That last point was apparently in reference to a slightly too convincing mea culpa supposedly from Mr Byron. That statement talked of wanting to 'sincerely apologise to my wife, my family, and the team at Astronomer' but also berated the concert organisers for how 'troubling' it was that a 'private moment became public without my consent'. Astronomer's communications director, Taylor Jones, confirmed to Men's Journal the apology 'is not a real statement'. The false statement's origins can be traced to an X account of a person claiming to be a CBS journalist named... Peter Enis. The page is labelled a parody account, with the bio indicating the name is a phallic pun. Many companies have polices that forbid or have strict disclosure obligations around relationships that involve senior staff amid concerns the employees further down the ladder could feel pressured into them. Then CEO of McDonalds Steve Easterbrook resigned in 2019 after he admitted to a consensual relationship with an employee below him violating company policy. It's not known if Astronomer has a policy in that regard. In the video, now viral worldwide, Ms Cabot covered her face and turned her back while Mr Byron ducked out of view, prompting laughter from the crowd. Mr Byron appears to mutter, 'F***ing hell, it's me', before disappearing from view. 'Oh, what?' Coldplay front man Chris Martin said as the scenes were played out to the concert goers. 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' he added.

Reality TV, Mormon wives, and guilty pleasures

What do dancing Mormons, blind dates, and superyachts have in common? They've all featured on so-called 'reality TV' shows. But just how 'real' are they? Some argue reality tv is anti-feminist – yet the genre is consistently popular with young women, and a new reality TV show is breaking records with religious women at the centre of it – The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. It's not the first time The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints has been featured on reality TV, and it certainly won't be the last. So why the interest in the 'real' lives of religious people? And can 'trash' tv teach us complex lessons about gender, shame, and religion? Guests: First broadcast 19 October 2024
