On July 23, it issued four show-cause notices over breaches related to cabin crew rest norms, training regulations, and operational protocols-following certain voluntary disclosures made earlier by the airline, reports added.A 15-page preliminary report released this month by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on the AI171 crash found that fuel supply to both engines was cut off within seconds of each other shortly after takeoff.The cockpit voice recorder captured one pilot asking, "Why did you cut off?" to which the other responded that he had not done so. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted 146 maintenance audits of major Indian airlines in 2025 (up to July), Civil Aviation MoS Murlidhar Mohol informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Responding to a question raised by Congress MP Murari Lal Meena regarding aircraft maintenance oversight, the minister said the DGCA follows a 'structured surveillance and audit framework," comprising regular and spot audits, night surveillance, and ramp inspections to ensure aircraft safety. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has a structured surveillance and audit framework in place, i.e. planned and unplanned surveillance of organisations/aircraft, which includes regular and periodic audits, spot checks, night Surveillance and ramp inspections across all operators, including continuous oversight of maintenance practices, the minister said in response to the question. The Annual Surveillance Plan (ASP) for the year is prepared in advance, and the audits are conducted in a timely manner as per the Annual Surveillance Plan. The DGCA adheres to an audit calendar to ensure continuous oversight of all scheduled and non-scheduled airline/operators. Any deviation or rescheduling is addressed with urgency and reported accordingly, the minister added. Notably, Tata SIA Airlines Ltd (Vistara) had not undergone any audits in 2025 up to July, though it saw 35 audits in 2024. From 2023 to July 2025, the DGCA conducted a total of 683 maintenance audits of scheduled carriers, reflecting a steady oversight mechanism despite growing concerns over aircraft safety in recent months. The minister also addressed the June 12, 2025, Air India AI-171 accident in Ahmedabad, stating that a formal investigation is underway by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). A preliminary report has been published, but it does not assign blame or confirm causes. Mohol emphasised that the government does not endorse speculative conclusions, especially by foreign media, which may harm the dignity and morale of Indian pilots. 'All investigations under Indian rules are impartial, aiming solely to prevent future accidents," he said. "Why Target Air India Only": Supreme Court Junks Plea For Safety Audit
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear a plea to appoint a retired top court judge for examining Air India's safety practices among other aspects and asked the petitioner why target the airline that witnessed an "unfortunate tragedy". A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi told the petitioner in-person Narendera Kumar Goswami to withdraw his PIL and asked him to move the appropriate forum in case of grievances. "Don't give the impression that you are playing with other airlines. Why target Air India only which recently witnessed an unfortunate tragedy? If you want some regulatory mechanism in place, then why did you not make other airlines as party in your petition? Why only Air India?" the bench asked Goswami, a lawyer. The petitioner claimed to be a victim of "some unfortunate incident" with the airline. Justice Kant then told him, "We also travel every week and know what is the status. There was a tragedy, a very unfortunate one. This is not a time to run down an airline." Goswami in his PIL, which he filed in July, sought directions for constituting an independent committee, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to examine Air India's safety practices, maintenance procedures, and operational protocols, with a report to be submitted within three months. He also sought a direction for a comprehensive safety audit of Air India's entire fleet by an international aviation safety agency accredited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), addressing deficiencies identified in the 2024 ICAO audit report, to be completed within six months. Additionally, Directorate General of Civil Aviation was sought to be directed to implement and enforce a transparent, publicly accessible reporting system for all aviation safety incidents, including a centralized database, ensuring compliance with the Aircraft Rules, 1937, and international best practices. The PIL further sought a direction to Air India to provide compensation to the families of AI-171 crash victims in accordance with the Montreal Convention, 1999, and to offer ex-gratia payments or compensation to passengers of AI-143 for distress and inconvenience caused by the safety incident, as per applicable laws and industry standards. The London-bound Air India flight, Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, with 242 passengers and crew on board, crashed moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on the afternoon of June 12.

Vijayawada RPF, GRP rescue child sold into begging network
Vijayawada: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Govt Railway Police (GRP) at Vijayawada rescued a three-year-old girl from landing in a begging mafia network after she was sold for 5,000 by her father to a woman beggar. The police rescued the child from an APSRTC bus while she was being taken to Rajamahendravaram to be used for begging by the accused. The police arrested the accused father, identified as Saikam Masthan (35), a native of Vetapalem in Bapatla district, along with Bolla Srinivasulu (44), a buttermilk seller at Vijayawada railway station, and Sadela Chinnari (28), a beggar, who purchased the child. They were sent to judicial remand. "Two separate teams, including GRP Vijayawada and RPF police personnel, were formed to trace the child after her father filed a complaint with the GRP police stating that his three-year-old daughter was abducted by an unidentified couple near the reservation counter at platform 1 of the Vijayawada railway station on Thursday night," Vijayawada GRP SHO JV Ramana said. With the help of Rajamahendravaram GRP, the couple and the child were taken into custody and brought to Vijayawada," Ramana said. "Looking at the suspicious conduct of the child's father, Masthan, we summoned his wife, Venkateswaramma, and it was revealed that Masthan was living separately from the family for the past four months. He went to his native place in Vetapalem and forcefully abducted his daughter, who was under her mother's supervision, four days ago and sold her for Rs 5,000 to the accused," the SHO said. Based on a complaint given by Venkateswaramma, a case under sections 137(2), 139(1) & (3), 143(2) & (4) R/w 3(5) of BNS and Sec 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 was registered. Probe is underway.
