Nahyan attends anniversary celebration of ‘Kalayaan 2025'
The event, hosted at Dubai World Trade Centre and organised by the 'Emirates Loves Philippines' platform in collaboration with Dubai Police, brought together over 40,000 members of the Filipino community in the UAE, along with government officials, diplomats, and social and economic figures from the community.
In his opening speech, Sheikh Nahyan congratulated the Filipino community on this important national day, and said: 'I am delighted to be with you this evening to celebrate the 127th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.'
'On behalf of the people of the United Arab Emirates, I extend our heartfelt congratulations and warmest greetings to the people of the Philippines here and around the world. This day marks not only your independence, but your enduring spirit of resilience, community, and optimism. It is a day of pride, and one you have every reason to celebrate,' the Minister said.
He added that the UAE is pleased to call the Philippines a close friend and valued partner. Across this nation, and across the decades, hundreds of thousands of Filipino people have made their mark.
Your knowledge, skills, creativity, and compassion have enriched many sectors of our society – from healthcare and education to hospitality, finance, entrepreneurship, and the arts.
Sheikh Nahyan emphasised that although our two countries may be separated by geography, we are united by shared values: openness, optimism, mutual respect, and a belief in the dignity of every individual.
He noted that the UAE's success story is a shared story.
'We are a global crossroads. A place where more than 200 nationalities live and work side by side. A place where peace and prosperity are made possible by welcoming people from every walk of life.'
He affirmed that under the visionary leadership of His Highness the President, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the unwavering support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, and of all of our national leaders, the country has embraced human fraternity, coexistence, compassion, and achievement as national pillars.
'This celebration today,' the Minister stated, 'is a reflection of that vision. It is a reflection of how the UAE honours every culture and every heritage that we host in our country, as well as the role that each community plays in building this great nation.'
He went on to say, 'In that spirit of inclusion, unity, and celebration, I would like to share with you a new national initiative that is very close to my heart.'
Announcing the initiative, Sheikh Nahyan said that as Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and in partnership with Sandooq Al Watan, a writing competition titled 'What the UAE Means to Me' has been launched.
He clarified that this initiative, aligned with the Year of Community, is a call to every resident – young and old, citizens and expatriates, professionals and students – to share their story and their voice.
'This competition,' he explained, 'invites participants to reflect on what the UAE has meant to them. Submissions can be a short story, a poem, a letter, an essay, or another creative expression, and written in either Arabic or English.'
He expressed confidence that many of the most moving and powerful entries will come from the Filipino community – from those who arrived with a dream and built a future, from mothers and fathers raising families, from nurses and teachers, from innovators and caregivers, and from artists and engineers.
'Your stories matter,' the Minister emphasised, 'and the rest of us would love to hear from you.'
He urged everyone to visit the website
www.myuaestory.ae
and submit their entries.
He called on the audience, saying, 'Please encourage your families, your children, your co-workers, and your neighbours. Invite them to put into words their experience of life in the UAE. Let your stories inspire others, and let your words help express what makes our country so uniquely united in diversity.'

UAE, Philippines discuss ways to boost trade and investment ties
Focus on private sector partnerships Discussions focused on building partnerships between business communities on both sides. Dr Al Zeyoudi highlighted the strong economic relationship between the UAE and the Philippines, pointing out that non-oil trade reached approximately US$940 million in 2024. The upward trend continued into 2025, with Q1 figures reaching US$257.7 million. The UAE remains the Philippines' top export destination in the Arab and African regions and ranks as its 17th largest trading partner globally. Commitment to ASEAN and beyond Describing the Philippines as a key partner in the ASEAN region, Dr Al Zeyoudi stated: "Our discussions today aim to explore private sector opportunities, identify areas for greater collaboration, and address challenges faced by Filipino and Emirati businesses alike." The Philippines, one of ASEAN's fastest-growing economies, recorded a 5.6% growth rate in 2024, positioning it as a vital logistics and manufacturing hub in the region. Role of the Filipino community in the UAE The meeting also explored how the Filipino diaspora—active in sectors like construction, healthcare, and hospitality—can contribute further to economic cooperation and shared prosperity. PBC-DNE holds dialogue with UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade to discuss opportunities, support for Filipino business community
The Philippine Business Council – Dubai and Northern Emirates (PBC-DNE) held a high-level dialogue with His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, to explore ways to support the Filipino business community in the host country. PBC Chairwoman Evangeline 'Asiyah' Monjardin, along with the Board of Directors, Secretary General Arch. Wilfredo Llarena Jr., Trade & Compliance Director Mary Jane Alvero Almahdi, Director of Corporate Governance and Compliance Harold Grecia Orona, and Membership Director Shiela Pellano, attended the meeting to represent council members and affiliates, ensuring the interests of Filipino professionals and business owners were shared. Monjardin said the council presented its accomplishments over more than 100 days during the meeting, which provided an avenue for mutual collaboration. 'We had the opportunity to hear the ministry's plans, goals, and vision for the Filipino community, while also consolidating and presenting the priorities and opportunities identified by our members. The dialogue became a platform for us to voice our interest, share expectations, and encourage greater engagement between the Philippine business community and the UAE government,' Monjardin said in an interview with The Filipino Times . Among the topics discussed were the ongoing dialogue between the Philippine Government and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade to enhance bilateral trade relations, and the Ministry's willingness to support the PBC and the broader Filipino business community in navigating the UAE business landscape. The dialogue also provided a platform to explore ways to support Filipino businesses and investors coming from the Philippines, helping them grow and expand their operations in Dubai while fostering stronger community and business relationships. In the works PBC-DNE and the Ministry also discussed development initiatives, including Golden Visa for eligible PBC members. In 2022, H.E. Al Zeyoudi awarded Golden Visa status to PBC members, and the council requested a second batch of endorsements to continue supporting its members. In addition, training sessions and seminars on entrepreneurship, business skills, and trade knowledge for Filipino entrepreneurs, SMEs, and professionals were proposed to improve awareness and provide practical guidance. Monjardin noted that the ministry acknowledged these initiatives as work in progress. The council also announced the expansion of its subcommittees to include Hospitality, Tourism, and Retail, which was welcomed by the ministry. This is in addition to their existing subcommittees, namely League of Freight Forwarders, League of Food & Beverage Enterprises, and TRIBE. The Filipino business community in Dubai and Northern Emirates has grown steadily in recent years. PBC-DNE data shows Filipino-owned businesses increased from an estimated 1,575 in 2023 to 2,154 by 2024, with an additional 216 companies registered in the first quarter of 2025. These businesses operate in sectors including food and beverage, fashion, logistics, technology services, trade, and hospitality.
