Madre will co-produce 'A Decorous Woman,' which has also tapped a grant from the Chilean Audiovisual Fund 2024 in its Feature Film Production category, securing 30% of its budget, Díaz told Variety.
Breaking out after 'The Maid,' Saavedra also played next to Tilda Swinton in Julio Torres' SXSW 2023 debut 'Problemista,' produced by Emma Stone. She scored last year a Film Independent Spirit Award nomination for supporting performance in 'Rotting in the Sun,' directed by 'The Maid' helmer Sebastián Silva.
In 'A Decorous Woman,' Saavedra will play Maria Marta, a 55-year-old hairdresser in Chile whose copes with her loneliness when her only daughter moves abroad. immersing herself in the gossip and stories told by her clients. After learning her daughter will not return to Chile, however, she is forced to stop fantasizing about others' lives and find comfort in unexpected places.
'Catalina is a magnificent artist. She has a quality of embodying the roles she plays with such commitment that you can feel how they live within her skin, transmitting the characters' emotions and experiences beyond the screen, connecting with the audience in a way that's not easy to achieve,' said Díaz.
'She is also a versatile actress who seamlessly navigates both drama and comedy – two genres central to the film and integral to Marta Maria's experience,' he added.
'A Decorous Woman' marks the feature debut of Columbia U and BAFTA Newcomers Program alum Luque, whose 2023 Chilean village abortion short 'So They Say' played Palm Springs Shortfest, as well as the Telluride Film Festival, Hamptons Film Festival and GuadaLAjara Film Festival, winning Jury Honors and Student Selects recognition at the Columbia Film Festival. It was also shortlisted for the BAFTA Yugo Student Awards and went on to score last year a CCAS Prize at the Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse.
'The film explores intergenerational bonds among women and their influence during a pivotal moment in the protagonist's life,' Luque told Variety. 'Set in a hair salon – an epicenter of gossip and storytelling – it combines elements of drama and comedy to portray experiences that resonate intimately with women's perspectives.'
'The film is a journey to the heart of motherhood, where caring and nurturing are in the epicenter. The protagonist must confront the absence and rediscover herself as a woman,' added Díaz.
At Mafiz, Málaga's industry forum, Díaz and Luque aim to meet with Spanish producers, international sales agents, distributors and film funds representatives.
'I am driven by films – and art in general – that explore the intimate universe of women. Natalia's debut feature is a film that depicts a complex character through a journey of self-discovery and self-recognition beyond society's expectations,' said Díaz.
He added: 'The film is also an invitation for the audience to reflect on the 'decorous women' in our lives – our mothers, aunts, grandmothers and beyond who have seen their life experience repressed, with limited opportunities for development outside the roles they are expected to fulfil.'

Grammy-nominated singer forced to cancel tour over poor ticket sales. ‘I'm extremely embarrassed.'
Grammy-nominated singer JP Saxe continued to pull the curtain back and let fans in on his decision to cancel his upcoming North American Fall tour. On July 28, the singer best known for his 2019 collaboration with Julia Michaels, 'If the World Was Ending," posted an urgent message on his TikTok account. He told fans that he had exactly 48 hours to sell 20,000 tickets to improve the prospects of Saxe's tour coming into fruition. Although fans tried to rally and bought a few thousand tickets in conjunction with Saxe working to keep prices low at around $50, it was not to be. On Aug. 1, Saxe posted that he made the decision to cancel the tour despite his fans' best efforts. As Saxe explained to The Canadian Press, he was on the verge of concluding his three-album deal with his record label. So, the label itself wasn't going to cover the costs for his slate of North American shows in the fall. Saxe tried to get creative, looking into booking bigger capacity venues to offset potential losses he couldn't afford to have this time around. Saxe then published an op-ed in Variety to detail the reasons why he was so transparent in how his process went for him. 'As a general rule, I'm always trying to practice sincerity in failure rather than the facade of success,' he wrote. 'I think it's really tempting as an artist, or as anyone, to always be projecting that everything is great at all times. And I find that uninteresting and disingenuous.' He thanked fans for their support and explained that those who attended would be promptly refunded. 'Even though a few thousand more people showed up in just a few days — which was emotional and the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me on the internet — it still wasn't enough to save the tour, and I will be humbly refunding every ticket,' Saxe said. Even if it was not meant to be this time around, Saxe still holds on to the belief that he will sell out an entire tour one day. Denzel Washington Says ‘I'm Not Interested in Oscars' and ‘Don't Care' About Them: ‘They Won't Do Me a Bit of Good' When I Die
Denzel Washington has nine Academy Award nominations under his belt and two Oscar wins (best supporting actor for 'Glory' and best actor for 'Training Day'), but he places no value on such career milestones. Speaking to 'Jake's Takes' on his 'Highest 2 Lowest' press tour, Washington said no acting decision he makes in his career has to do with winning awards. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said. 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.' 'That's what I'm talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn't elevate who he was.'
