Stop your browser from killing your laptop battery - Easy fixes you need now

Hindustan Times22-05-2025

Laptop batteries drain fast, often when you least expect it, like during a crucial meeting or a tight deadline. While many factors contribute to battery drain, your web browser stands out as a major power consumer. Since browsers run constantly as you load pages, watch videos, or switch between apps, they use up significant energy. However, by adjusting a few settings, you can reduce this drain and extend your laptop's battery life.
Here's how to make your browser less demanding on your laptop's battery:
Chrome has a built-in Energy Saver mode designed to cut power usage. To activate it, click the three dots at the top right, go to Settings > Performance, then turn on Energy Saver. You can set it to work whenever your laptop is unplugged or when the battery falls below 20%. Also, enable Memory Saver to put inactive tabs to sleep, which further reduces Chrome's resource demands. These changes lower energy use with minimal effect on browsing speed.

Edge offers Efficiency Mode to optimise power use. Access it by clicking the three dots, selecting Settings > System and Performance, then enabling Efficiency Mode. You can choose when it activates and adjust how long tabs remain active before sleeping. Setting Efficiency Mode to maximum saves the most battery, but may slightly slow page loading.
Opera includes a Battery Saver feature that can add about an hour to your laptop's runtime. Click the red Opera button, then go to Settings > Features, and enable Battery Saver. Set it to activate automatically when unplugged or at a specific battery level. Enabling 'Snooze inactive tabs' also helps cut down power use.

Dark mode can reduce screen power consumption, especially on OLED or QLED displays, where dark pixels use less energy. Firefox users can activate dark mode via the menu under Settings > Appearance. Chrome, Edge, and Opera typically follow your system theme by default. While the battery savings vary by screen type, dark mode remains a quick way to conserve power.

Each browser tab uses memory and processor resources, adding to battery drain even if you're not actively using it. Managing tabs by closing those not needed or using extensions like OneTab (for Chrome and Edge) or Tab Stash (for Firefox) can consolidate open tabs into a list and cut energy use. Reducing tabs is often the most effective way to lower browser power demands.

YouTube cracks down harder on ad-blockers, closes loophole that Firefox users relied on — no more ad-free rides

YouTube is again taking strict action against people using ad blockers. The company closed a loophole that helped Firefox users and others still block ads using some extensions. YouTube's fight with ad blockers started way back in May 2023. At that time, they tested warnings saying ad blockers weren't allowed, as per reports. Later, YouTube stopped videos from playing for people using ad after those steps, some browsers and tools like Firefox and certain extensions still worked to block ads. Now, YouTube has patched that workaround too. More users are seeing warning messages that say using ad blockers violated YouTube's Terms of Service, as stated by TechSpot. New warnings but slower start But not everyone is affected yet, people in Southeast Asia and Europe say they can still block ads. This suggests YouTube might be rolling out the update slowly, not all at once. This isn't the first crackdown, as per reports. A new rule against ad blockers was started in March this year by YouTube. It mostly affected Opera GX users with the uBlock Origin tool. Firefox users also began getting warning messages on their screens. YouTube's warning banners now give two options, turn off the ad blocker or get YouTube Premium for ad-free videos. YouTube Premium costs $14 per month, and there's a Premium Lite version for $8 per month, which removes ads from most videos, according to the report by TechSpot. Live Events This whole situation is like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole, every time someone finds a way to block ads, YouTube finds a way to stop it again. FAQs Q1. Why is YouTube blocking ad blockers? Because it goes against YouTube's rules and affects their ad revenue. Q2. How can I watch YouTube without ads now? You must either disable your ad blocker or buy YouTube Premium to keep watching without ads.

Google is testing new Chrome version that may not support these iPhone models

is testing a new version of its Chrome browser that may no longer support older iPhone and iPad models, including the iPhone X and certain iPad Pro devices. This change is due to Chrome soon requiring at least iOS 17. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to release notes for the latest Chrome Beta on TestFlight (seen by MacRumors), the exact removal date is not specified. However, the next stable version of Chrome in the App Store is expected to stop supporting these older devices. The decision to discontinue support may be linked to older devices reportedly lacking the necessary processing power or memory to run Chrome effectively. Removing support for older hardware can help improve performance and stability on newer devices, and allows the development team to focus on optimising Chrome for more current platforms. iPhone models that may lose support for Google Chrome's next version According to a report by MacRumors, Chrome for iOS version 138.7204.13 will no longer support several older Apple devices, including the iPhone X and iPhone 8 (2017), the fifth-generation iPad (2017), the 9.7-inch iPad Pro (2016), and the first-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2015). The reason is a change in Chrome's system requirements. Previously, the browser required iOS 15 or later, but soon it will need iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 to run. Since these newer operating systems are not compatible with older devices, users of unsupported iPhones and iPads may no longer be able to install Chrome once Google enforces the update. Over time, those sticking with older devices will also stop receiving Chrome's security updates and bug fixes, which will eventually render the browser unusable. To continue using Chrome safely, users will need to upgrade to a newer device. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Like all browsers on the App Store, Chrome relies on Apple's WebKit engine, as Apple does not allow custom browser engines like Chrome's Blink. However, in the European Union, Apple was recently required to support alternative browser engines under the Digital Markets Act. This functionality demands iOS 17.4 or later, though no third-party browsers using non-WebKit engines have launched in the EU App Store yet. Other features that may arrive in the next version of Google Chrome for iPhones The Chrome version that Google is currently testing may also bring a range of improvements. For instance, iPad users will soon be able to organise tabs into groups, a feature Apple already introduced in Safari with iPadOS 18. Additionally, Google's password manager is getting an upgrade, allowing saved passkeys to sync seamlessly across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Passkeys are designed to replace traditional passwords with biometric authentication. While basic passkey syncing was available as of January, it had limited functionality. With this update, any passkeys created in Chrome on your iPhone will now sync with end-to-end encryption and appear in Chrome's built-in password manager on your iPad, and vice versa. Previously, Chrome stored passkeys either in Apple Passwords or iCloud Keychain.

Meta in talks for Scale AI investment that could top $10 billion

Meta Platforms Inc . is in talks to make a multibillion-dollar investment into artificial intelligence startup Scale AI , according to people familiar with the matter. The financing could exceed $10 billion in value, some of the people said, making it one of the largest private company funding events of all time. The terms of the deal are not finalised and could still change, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. A representative for Scale did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meta declined to comment. Scale AI, whose customers include Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI, provides data labeling services to help companies train machine-learning models and has become a key beneficiary of the generative AI boom. The startup was last valued at about $14 billion in 2024, in a funding round that included backing from Meta and Microsoft. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Scale was in talks for a tender offer that would value it at $25 billion. This would be Meta's biggest ever external AI investment, and a rare move for the company. The social media giant has before now mostly depended on its in-house research, plus a more open development strategy, to make improvements in its AI technology. Meanwhile, Big Tech peers have invested heavily: Microsoft has put more than $13 billion into OpenAI while both Inc. and Alphabet Inc. have put billions into rival Anthropic. Part of those companies' investments have been through credits to use their computing power. Meta doesn't have a cloud business, and it's unclear what format Meta's investment will take. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has made AI Meta's top priority, and said in January that the company would spend as much as $65 billion on related projects this year. The company's push includes an effort to make Llama the industry standard worldwide. Meta's AI chatbot — already available on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp — is used by 1 billion people per month. Scale, co-founded in 2016 by CEO Alexandr Wang, has been growing quickly: The startup generated revenue of $870 million last year and expects sales to more than double to $2 billion in 2025, Bloomberg previously reported. Scale plays a key role in making AI data available for companies. Because AI is only as good as the data that goes into it, Scale uses scads of contract workers to tidy up and tag images, text and other data that can then be used for AI training. Scale and Meta share an interest in defense tech. Last week, Meta announced a new partnership with defense contractor Anduril Industries Inc. to develop products for the US military, including an AI-powered helmet with virtual and augmented reality features. Meta has also granted approval for US government agencies and defense contractors to use its AI models. The company is already partnering with Scale on a program called Defense Llama — a version of Meta's Llama large language model intended for military use. Scale has increasingly been working with the US government to develop AI for defense purposes. Earlier this year the startup said it won a contract with the Defense Department to work on AI agent technology. The company called the contract 'a significant milestone in military advancement.'
