The latest iOS update might have reactivated Apple Intelligence features

Yahoo11-02-2025

Some iPhone users have reported that yesterday's update to iOS 18.3.1 reactivated once-disabled Apple Intelligence features on specific devices. Certain features, like Notification Summaries, had been shut off over concerns about accuracy. Now users are reporting that these features have been re-enabled following the update.
Devices that displayed a welcome screen after updating seem to have a higher chance of these features being re-activated. Reddit user u/Hanthunius reported the bug on their iPhone 15 Pro Max, while others saw the features make a comeback on Mac devices. MacRumors tested this theory, and while Apple Intelligence remained disabled on iPadOS and iOS in their tests, the Mac Mini was a different story.
The team saw the Welcome screen appear on the Mac Mini, but on none of the other devices. They also pointed out that unlike typical Welcome screen, this one lacked the option to set it up later and forced users to enable the feature to continue.
Aside from the fact that this is not a user-friendly approach, re-enabling Apple Intelligence poses other problems. It requires roughly 7GB of memory per device, so users with limited storage might disable Apple Intelligence to make room for applications they use more often.
When iOS 18.3 rolled out, it made Apple Intelligence an opt-out feature. That means that it's turned on by default on any compatible device, and if you don't wish to use the feature, you need to turn it off.
If you previously had Apple Intelligence disabled, check to make sure your settings haven't changed. This particular bug seems to be sporadic, but if you've updated to the latest version of iOS — and especially if you received a Welcome screen upon turning your device back on — then it's worth taking a look.

Apple stock has severely lagged the rest of the Mag 7. BofA says a rumored AI deal could turn it around.

It's been a rough year for Apple stock, but there might be hope for a rebound with a rumored AI acquisition. Apple has been the worst-performing Magnificent Seven stock in 2025, with shares down 20% year-to-date. On top of weak iPhone sales and tariff concerns, the company has lagged in the AI race among its mega-cap tech peers. At Apple's WWDC earlier this month, the company failed to ease Wall Street's concerns about its Apple Intelligence product, with investors bemoaning the company's lack of a new killer app. However, Apple executives could be eyeing a purchase of AI startup Perplexity, Bloomberg reported last week. While Perplexity has denied any M&A discussions and Apple has declined to comment, Wall Street didn't ignore the buzz. Bank of America believes a deal could throw a lifeline to Apple's thus-lacking AI strategy and turn the stock around. A potential stock rebound If you can't make your own special AI sauce, buying it might be the next best option, according to BofA. The bank said that, in the near-term, "we think any positive developments around AI initiatives would be positive for the stock that has largely been seen as an AI laggard." Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine that responds to queries with cited responses, as opposed to a Google search that returns links. If completed, the acquisition would provide Apple with a more comprehensive AI offering instead of building one out in-house over years. A strategic partnership, as opposed to an outright acquisition, could also help Apple to a lesser degree. "Any such deal (we do not have any direct knowledge of the probability of such a deal) would likely be positive for shares that are currently in the penalty box given Apple is largely viewed as an AI laggard (deep Siri integration delayed and no cutting edge models)," Wamsi Mohan, technology research analyst at Bank of America, wrote. An acquisition would give Apple access to Perplexity's search and answering capabilities, fresh AI talent, product synergies with Siri and other Apple offering, and exposure to non-Google search, Mohan highlighted. Specifically, Perplexity could revitalize Siri's capabilities, which have struggled to keep up with developments in chatbots. Perplexity could also be integrated with not just Safari but also system-wide, helping Apple build AI into its services and hardware. All of these factors could fetch a higher valuation for Apple stock. Most importantly, an acquisition would provide Apple with a clear AI strategy and prevent Perplexity from being acquired by a competitor. Acquisition risks Competition in the AI space is fierce, and Apple certainly isn't alone in pursuing a potential M&A or acquihire strategy. As Big Tech companies scramble to grab market share in the rapidly developing AI industry, growing through inorganic means is becoming more common. Before Meta invested $14.3 billion into data annotation startup Scale AI, it also tried to acquire Perplexity and another AI startup called Safe Superintelligence. But that's not to say that locking down a hot AI startup like Perplexity would solve all of Apple's problems. Integrating a young startup into a larger, more-established company comes with its fair share of organizational challenges, and Mohan pointed to some of Apple's previous M&A ventures, such as Siri or Laserlike, as examples of acquisitions that experienced delays or roadblocks. Apple will need to customize parts of Perplexity's platform to fit into its existing ecosystem and scale up to Apple's much larger user base. There are also legal risks: Perplexity is facing a copyright infringement case, which Apple would need to take on in the case of an acquisition. Buying Perplexity could also jeopardize Apple's existing partnership with Google, creating a potential headwind to earnings. Even with these concerns, Mohan is cautiously optimistic on the payoff of a potential acquisition: "From an investor's vantage point, a deal would offer a high-reward but high-risk proposition," he wrote. "However, execution, in our view, is paramount: Apple would need to break from some of its old habits (siloed development, extreme secrecy, slow rollout) to fully capitalize on Perplexity's fast-paced innovation," Mohan added. If completed, the acquisition would be Apple's biggest ever, as Perplexity is currently valued at $14 billion. It would also be a marked departure from the company's traditional free cash flow strategy of conducting stock buybacks and paying dividends. Bank of America believes Apple could certainly afford to shell out for a deal of this size, as the company posted profits of $24.8 billion in Q1 2025. A Perplexity deal would signal to investors that Apple is willing to shift its capital allocation strategy to compete in the AI race. "Given the transformative potential of AI, many analysts believe that not investing aggressively in AI is the bigger risk, even for a company as successful as Apple," Mohan wrote.

iOS 26 just got a big design upgrade — thanks to your complaints

Apple released iOS 26 Beta 2 this week, adding some new features while also apparently fixing complaints about the new Liquid Glass user interface for iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices. Liquid Glass refreshed the interface across Apple's different operating systems with a new look and feel that gave it more of a transparent look. However, initial impressions were mixed. We found the look amazing but with some flaws such as app tinting and how Control Center looks. "This feature allowed you to change the color of your app icons — at least in theory. In practice, the finished result made it look like you poured sauce all over your apps," my colleague Josh Render said of the customizable feature. Tom's Guide's John Velasco found that the transparency caused issues with the way Control Center appears. Mostly it appears too busy and can make the settings panel unreadable. "I noticed how the transparency of Liquid Glass clashes with the way the Control Center appears on top of certain elements, like the icons on my home screen, or very busy web pages," he wrote. We were able to find workarounds for both issues, but it requires some finagling with the settings and does reduce the transparency. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. With developer beta 2 for iOS 26, Apple has adjusted the background blur which obscures the home screen more and makes it more readable. Here's an example from X user Aaron Perris, a contributor at Mac Rumors. iOS 26 beta 2 blurs the background of the Control Center 23, 2025 Notifications appears to have received a similar update to make them more readable, though it doesn't look as dramatic as the Control Center change. To be clear, this likely won't be the final look for iOS 26 this is still a developers beta. A public beta won't launch until later this summer followed by the full release ahead of the iPhone 17 launch in the fall. Still, it is clear that Apple appears to be listening to user feedback and adjusting.

ElevenLabs releases a standalone voice generation app

Voice AI company ElevenLabs just released a standalone mobile app for iOS and Android users to generate voice clips from text. Until now, if you had to generate samples using ElevenLabs' AI-powered voice libraries, you had to rely on its web app. Now, you can use its mobile app to generate clips on the go. To use the app, you simply type or paste in the text, then select a suitable voice to generate an audio clip. The free plan gives users access to roughly 10 minutes of audio generation. You can choose different models to balance cost and quality, and you'll have a shared credit limit between the web and mobile app. ElevenLabs also said that the app has access to v3 alpha, its newest text-to-speech models, which allow users to control expressions with tags. Jack McDermott, the company's mobile growth lead, told TechCrunch that a lot of creators already use a web browser on mobile to create voice samples to use in videos with other apps like CapCut, Instagram, or Inshot. Seeing this demand, the company wanted to build a native experience. 'Over the past year, we've seen an explosion of creativity from our community — content creators, marketers, educators, voice artists, and professionals using ElevenLabs to bring projects to life. Many have accessed ElevenLabs from mobile web browsers and asked for a faster, intuitive, more powerful experience built natively for mobile,' he said, in an email message. The company will also compete with other voice cloning and generation tools like Speechify and Captions. This is ElevenLabs' second consumer-facing app after it released the Reader app last year to let users listen to articles, blogs, PDFs, and eBooks on the go. Earlier this year, it also opened up the Reader app for publishers to distribute audiobooks. Going forward, the company aims to release other new features like speech-to-text, a conversational AI agent tool, and add MCP-powered experiences like to the app. Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data
