Temple desecrated in Fiji: 100-year-old idol vandalised; accused sent for psychiatric evaluation
NEW DELHI: The vandalism of a century-old Hindu temple in Suva has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over the safety of Fiji's Indo-Fijian community, with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum accusing the government of turning a blind eye to a rise in targeted attacks, reported news outlet RNZ.
The incident occurred on Friday at the historic Samabula Shiv Temple, where 100-year-old idols were reportedly destroyed. Religious groups and political leaders have voiced outrage over what is being described as a deeply disturbing act of sacrilege.
A 28-year-old man, identified as Samuela Tawake, was charged with one count of alleged sacrilege and one count of throwing an object. He appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody for two weeks pending a psychiatric evaluation, according to local media reports.
Sayed-Khaiyum, in a strong statement, alleged that attacks against the Indo-Fijian community were increasing and criticised the government for its lack of response.
Labour Party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry also condemned the act but urged the public not to view it as a sign of growing religious intolerance in Fiji.
In a Facebook post, he acknowledged the outrage within the Hindu community but suggested the accused appeared to be mentally unwell and that the matter should be handled with sensitivity.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has called on the police to take firm action. Director Loukinikini Lewaravu said such acts of sacrilege were not only morally reprehensible but also a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion and belief.

Bengaluru: In a stunning drama involving foreign currency, an elderly woman seeking help and sympathy, and a shocking lapse of judgment, a 42-year-old cloth-seller walked into a trap stitched together by fraudsters and was defrauded of Rs 4.5 lakh in a currency exchange deal gone awry. According to his complaint with police, Zia-ul-Haq, a resident of Shivajinagar and from Assam, sells clothes by the roadside in Indiranagar. Late June, a woman met him on the pretext of purchasing clothes. During interaction, she asked him if he knew anyone who could exchange Saudi riyals for Indian currency. When Haq informed her Shivajinagar has a foreign currency exchange office, the woman took down his number and said an aged woman staying one floor above her house had a bundle of notes and sought help in conversion. Around 9pm the same day, Haq received a call from the woman, who handed the phone to her neighbour, said to be a pourakarmika. The elderly woman claimed she had stumbled upon a packet of 1,626 Saudi riyals with 50-riyal face value while clearing the road. She claimed she was a widow, her son was mentally ill, and her two daughters didn't have much knowledge about financial matters. Initially, she offered to accompany the cloth vendor to the currency exchange shop, but beat a hasty retreat with the now-known ruse: "I'm busy with work, please help me." She pestered him with endless phone calls seeking help. "I agreed to buy the riyals for Rs 4.5 lakh. I borrowed money from my acquaintances and called the woman. She asked me to come over to her home. When I reached Nagawara bus stop on June 30, she insisted I meet her near the bus stop as a few persons fought near their house and one person was attacked with lethal weapons and police were at the spot. The woman who first visited him in Indiranagar came with a male friend. They said they would exchange the notes on the road. When I refused, they showed a bundle wrapped in cloth. Admittedly, I went completely blind for a few seconds, took the bundle without opening or examining it and handed them Rs 4.5 lakh as promised," Haq said. And the couple vanished out of sight in seconds. After returning home, Haq opened the bundle only to find newspaper cuttings. He called the woman's number, which was switched off. A senior police officer said Haq filed a complaint two weeks after the crime. A case of cheating has been registered, and efforts are on to nab them, he added.

PM Modi to gift Rs 2,258 crore projects to Kashi on Aug 2

SIT to probe illegal kidney racket
1 2 Namakkal/Trichy: A special investigation team (SIT) led by S Vineeth, project director of Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme (TNHSRP), has been set up to probe the illegal kidney sale racket in Namakkal. Official sources said the team will investigate transactions between donors, who allegedly sold their kidneys for financial gain, and the recipients, in addition to the role of private hospitals suspected of facilitating the process. The team carried out document verification at Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer's office on Tuesday. A team member said they will be conduct investigations in these areas for two days. Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer (RDO) Suganthi, Namakkal joint director Dr Rajmohan, Kumarapalayam taluk tahsildar Sivakumar and Pallipalayam police inspector Malarvizhi were present. Later in the evening, the SIT held an inquiry at a private hospital in Perambalur over allegations that surgeries were done there. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, deputy leader of the opposition R B Udhayakumar criticised the state govt over the racket, while TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai called for strict action against those involved. Namakkal police are also on the lookout for the broker M Annandhan, against whom a case has been registered. This follows video clips of donors surfacing on social media along with reports that workers employed in power loom units and dyeing mills in Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal were being lured by brokers to sell their kidneys for Rs5–10 lakh. Though a few more hospitals in Trichy are being named, JD sources confirmed that the inquiry has not been extended beyond the one hospital as yet.
