L.A. County firefighters to receive Pat Tillman Award at ESPYs
In January, as wildfires tore through greater Los Angeles, more than 7,500 emergency personnel mobilized — confronting searing heat and extreme winds, trying to contain the devastation.
Among them stood an Olympic gold medalist and a professional soccer champion.

L.A. County firefighters David Walters and Erin Regan, former athletes who were among the 7,500 emergency personnel who responded to the January wildfires in Southern California, earned them this year's Pat Tillman Award for Service that will be presented at the ESPY Awards.
The award — named after Tillman, the former Arizona Cardinals safety who left the NFL to enlist in the Army following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was killed in action — celebrates those with deep ties to sports who have served others, embodying Tillman's legacy.

Years before joining the fire department, Walters helped the U.S. win the 4x200-meter freestyle relay gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games. He swam the lead leg in the preliminaries, helping the team set an Olympic record that paved the way for a world-record win in the final.

During the fires, Walters recounted the exhausting conditions as crews fought blazes that scorched nearly 38,000 acres — claiming the lives of 30 people and destroying homes, businesses and landmarks in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades.
'We're pretty much trying to keep what is left here standing,' Walters told NewNation. 'So we're not laying down. We're staying in our position — that's correct, I did sleep on top of the hose bed last night, just staying ready to do what we can still do."
Walters told ESPN he is honored to serve Los Angeles.
"This has been a challenging year, but also a rewarding one as we watched the Los Angeles community come together to support their neighbors," he said in ESPN's award announcement.

Regan, who joined the department in 2008, once anchored the Washington Freedom to a Women's United Soccer Association title following a stellar goalkeeping career at Wake Forest, where she earned first-team All-ACC honors and broke multiple school records.

Outside of firehouse duties, Regan champions female representation in the fire service. She co-founded Girls' Fire Camp, a one-day program introducing young girls to firefighting, and launched the Women's Fire Prep Academy, offering mentorship and hands-on training for aspiring female firefighters.
'My career choice was inspired by my family's history of public service, so receiving this award is a tribute to the many great influences that shaped my upbringing," Regan said in ESPN's award announcement. "As first responders, we take pride in hard work and serving others, and I'm truly humbled to be recognized alongside incredible heroes like Pat Tillman.'

The ESPYs, hosted by comedian Shane Gillis, will air on ABC and steam on ESPN+ on July 16 at 8 p.m. PDT.

The race for college football's most prestigious awards is about to begin, and proven stars and rising sophomores are early frontrunners. From Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik to Ohio State's star tandem of Caleb Downs and Jeremiah Smith, here are six players positioned to add their name in the history books during the 2025-26 season: Fred Biletnikoff Award: Jeremiah Smith Few young receivers have generated as much hype as Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, who comes off a dominant freshman season. Smith led the Buckeyes with 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, finishing ahead of first-round pick Emeka Egbuka. The No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class delivered for the Buckeyes throughout their national title run, connecting with quarterback Will Howard for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason. At 6-foot-4 with excellent hands and elite route running capabilities, it's hard to keep the ball out of Smith's hands. Jim Thorpe Award: Caleb Downs Two years into his collegiate career, accolades are stacking up for Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. The preseason first-team AP All-American was an immediate standout for the Buckeyes after spending his freshman season at Alabama. Downs was named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year after finishing the season with 82 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and six pass break-ups. He was critical to the championship run, consistently locking down threats in the passing and running games. He held tight end and eventual first-round draft pick Tyler Warren to four catches for 47 yards in Ohio State's 20-13 win over Penn State and picked off Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the CFP semifinal. Chuck Bednarik Award: Dylan Stewart After a breakout freshman campaign, South Carolina's Dylan Stewart is poised to lead the Gamecocks' defense in 2025. Stewart earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team after recording 23 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup. The edge rusher who can also drop into coverage put together one of the best freshman defensive campaigns in South Carolina since Jadeveon Clowney. Though Downs will likely make a strong case, the Bednarik Award has yet to be given to a safety in its 30 years of existence. Stewart is one of just seven sophomores on the watch list for the award. Doak Walker Award: Jeremiyah Love Love is widely considered the top returning running back after playing an integral role in Notre Dame's best season since 1988. The six-foot, 214-pound running back finished the season with 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries, averaging 70.3 yards per game, 8.5 yards per carry and at least one score in each of the first 13 games. As Notre Dame undergoes a quarterback shift in 2025, Love could see even more opportunities to carry the offense, putting the preseason AP All-American in prime position to take home the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back. Outland Trophy: Spencer Fano The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. earned the award in 2024, marking back-to-back Outland Trophy wins for the Longhorns after T'Vondre Sweat won in 2023. We expect the award to stay on the offensive side of the ball in 2025 and Utah's Spencer Fano is a player to watch. He led FBS offensive tackles in 2024 with a 92.7 PFF grade, allowing just two quarterback hits and one sack through 424 pass-block attempts. Fano held his opponents to zero sacks through the last 11 games of the season. The preseason AP All-American has shown versatility, lining up on the right and left sides, and seems a good bet to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Heisman Trophy: Cade Klubnik The most prestigious award in college football is likely to return to the hands of a quarterback in 2025. Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik headline early Heisman conversations and possess the best odds heading into the season. Klubnik has the experience Manning lacks, the mobility Nussmeier strives for and enough consistency in the receiving room to hit the ground running in 2025. The Clemson quarterback comes off an impressive 2024-2025 campaign, completing 63.4% of passes for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. A dual-threat, he added 463 yards and seven touchdowns on foot. His 36 touchdowns ranked behind only Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, who were both selected in the 2025 NFL draft. Colts' brass, on the hot seat, couldn't trust their future with Anthony Richardson
The best move for the future of the Indianapolis Colts, in terms of chasing a Super Bowl, was to continue to start Anthony Richardson and develop him into what they were hoping for when they drafted him fourth overall. But the decision makers might not be around for the future if they don't win now. And they acted accordingly. It's a conundrum plenty of NFL teams face. What's best for the franchise and self preservation don't always match up. The Colts, with GM Chris Ballard and coach Shane Steichen having to feel some pressure to win this season, played it safe and chose Daniel Jones to be their starting quarterback for the opener on Sept. 7. It's swinging for a single, or a double at best. The Colts made a huge gamble on Richardson, and it could still pay off down the road. It's not like Jones is a lock to keep the job all season. But the Colts couldn't afford to see their gamble through, given Richardson's struggles. Colts couldn't wait on Anthony Richardson One play might have helped guide the Colts' decision. There were plenty of reasons to bring in Jones to compete with Richardson. Richardson was benched last season as he completed 47.7% of his passes. He has been injured throughout his two NFL seasons having missed more games (19) than he has started (15). But if it was truly a competition going into August, one mistake had to reinforce to the Colts that there was a long way for Richardson to go. In the preseason opener, Richardson took a huge sack and dislocated his right pinkie finger. The problem wasn't the lost yardage or even the injury. As almost every former quarterback and tape guru with a social media account pointed out, it was a fairly routine read for Richardson to throw to one of the open receivers to his right when the Ravens sent an extra rusher from that side. Richardson never even looked that way. It's the type of mistake that gets made by a quarterback with 28 combined starts between the NFL and college. Richardson isn't an accurate passer, but his biggest problem remains inexperience. He had just 13 career starts in college. He had immense physical talent but needed time to learn how to play quarterback. And learning that in the highly pressurized world of the NFL is hard. And too often, coaching staffs and front offices don't have enough time to be patient with that development. That's a reason we have seen players like Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield and Geno Smith thrive elsewhere. Teams can't wait on them to figure it out. Steichen and Ballard had to feel like they were running out of time. Daniel Jones gets his shot Jones probably gives the Colts a better chance to win a few more games now, though we have seen plenty of Jones in the NFL. It's hard to envision him ever being a championship-level quarterback. A division title is likely the Colts' loftiest realistic goal with Jones at quarterback. But he will run the offense in a more efficient way. We could see in the preseason that he knows where to go with the ball and can deliver it more often than not. Perhaps Jones is the next Darnold/Mayfield/Smith reclamation, though it seems unlikely. He was just the safer option for the present. And perhaps Richardson gets another shot this season to show what he can do. He'll need an injury or Jones to struggle, but that can happen over the course of a long season. Or perhaps Richardson's chance comes with another team. He was clearly overdrafted at fourth overall, but plenty of teams saw the same incredible physical skills as he came out of Florida. He still has a high ceiling, and that's probably why he'd be starting Week 1 in a different scenario. It just wasn't in the best immediate interest of those making the decision for Indianapolis. It might be a while before we see another draft pick like Richardson again. His lack of experience was a red flag, but the Colts ignored it. He probably would have been better off as a middle-round pick that could develop with little pressure, closer to the Joe Milton III territory of the draft. The Colts could only see the upside when they made the pick. And now, ironically, they have to forget the upside after just 15 starts to try and win now with Jones, even if their ceiling is much lower now.

The RB drop-off happens quickly. Grabbing not just a top guy, but the top overall RB is always a huge advantage. This season, four names truly qualify for being in this discussion: two young stars and two vets who have been the RB1 before. Keep reading as we decide which running back to take first at his position in 2025 fantasy football drafts. Who's the best fantasy RB in 2025? Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons The Falcons finally figured out how to use Robinson properly last season. It took long enough. After the first five weeks of the 2024 season, the Atlanta coaching staff must've had an epiphany about how good Robinson really was. Robinson saw his touches grow from 17 in Weeks 1-5, to 23.4 per game from Weeks 6-18. He averaged 120.9 scrimmage yards per game and was the RB1 in fantasy points per game. Robinson saw a higher target share and route share in those weeks as well. There is no reason the Falcons saw that sort of production from Robinson and decided to take volume away. After all, there is close to no competition for that backfield with just Tyler Allgeier, who can be annoying at the goal line for Robinson owners but is more of a handcuff type. After you read about this top RB tier, click to see our . Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions Gibbs absolutely exploded last year for fantasy football. He was the RB2 in fantasy points per game and finished as the overall RB3 in 2024. It's strange the way people talk about the David Montgomery injury as it relates to Gibbs' production. Sure, when Montgomery was injured in the final three weeks of the season, Gibbs went nuclear and averaged 32.6 fantasy points per game. However, even with Montgomery healthy and as the starter from Weeks 1-15, Gibbs already had been averaging 18.8 fantasy points per game (fantasy RB4). This season, Gibbs is the starter and is expected to take control of this offense. Montgomery will still be there and taking touches, but we've already established Gibbs has no problem producing alongside Montgomery. DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers Let's just start with the obvious: If McCaffrey is healthy all season, he'll be the RB3 or better in fantasy football. But it's a big if, and managers are rightfully terrified of drafting an injury-riddled, 29-year-old RB. To be fair, his upside speaks for itself: In the last five seasons where CMC played at least 16 games, his lowest finish came as the RB10 his rookie year. The other four seasons he finished RB2 in 2018, RB1 in 2019, RB2 in 2022, and RB1 in 2023. At the moment, McCraffrey is one of the only healthy RBs in San Francisco. With the easiest schedule in the league, CMC will feast ... if he's on the field. MORE: Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles Barkley's 2024 season was nothing short of historic. He rushed for 2,005 yards (led the NFL) off 345 carries (led the NFL) with 13 rushing touchdowns, while adding 33-278-2 as a receiver. 'Regression' is an understatement when it comes to Barkley's 2025 outlook. Barkley had the third-most touches (482) of any RB in the 21st century. In the last 20 seasons, players who registered 400-plus touches saw a 30% regression the following year. We've seen player like Derrick Henry or CMC get hurt following seasons with such high usage. This does not mean it will happen to Barkley, but the regression seems inevitable. WARNING: Avoid these The decision: Who is the best fantasy RB in 2025? It's Bijan Robinson's season to prove how elite he really is. We all saw the Falcons coaching staff finally begin to use Robinson correctly and his fantasy output was amazing. This season you have a potential dynamic offense with Michael Penix Jr. at QB and this only means more opportunities for Robinson to succeed.
