Tragic accident at Randfontein construction site prompts Gauteng Department's urgent response

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements expressed its sorrow on Thursday over the tragic incident earlier this week at the Montrose Mega City Development site in Randfontein, which resulted in one fatality.
The department said preliminary information indicates that the deceased was involved in unauthorised illegal activities at the site when a portion of a staircase structure collapsed and fell on him.
According to the department, the building itself did not collapse; instead, slabs that were part of the staircase gave way due to tampering with the building's steel reinforcements.

The department said the matter has been reported to the police, and a formal investigation is under way.
Gauteng MEC of Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara said: "We call upon the local community to join us in protecting this important housing development. Land invasions, theft, and vandalism not only delay the delivery of much-needed housing but also endanger lives."
The department stated that they are negotiating with the landowner to determine the best approach for taking over the project, which remains a key priority as it represents a significant step in their commitment to delivering sustainable human settlements.

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng have called for Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the Motara to be held accountable for the death, citing that the structure is deteriorating.
According to the DA, the government chose an incompetent company instead of hiring a competent developer, and the company has failed to deliver and is now holding this R11 billion project to ransom.
The DA's Evert Du Plessis said: "Rather than providing relief to the thousands of residents in Randfontein who are currently enduring inhumane and undignified living conditions, the project highlights the Gauteng government's tragic failure to deliver adequate housing."

'He came to fetch her on 3 July, and when she came home, she said nothing; however, the following day, she attempted suicide. 'She didn't want to talk to me, and I called the accused, and she warned me not to call him; she didn't want him to come, but I thought it was because she didn't want to go back for counselling again. He came with someone else, they left, and he brought her home that evening, but then the accused asked me if she could spend the night at his place. My husband refused because he doesn't have a wife and lives alone.' According to the victim's mother, she had initially contacted Thysen seeking counselling for her daughter's drug use, as he was a known community leader. She stated that the girl had warned her not to contact Thysen after the first incident, and she initially believed her daughter's reluctance was related to counselling sessions rather than abuse. The mother only became aware of the alleged sexual assaults on July 30, 2025, following a second incident. The second alleged encounter took place on July 26, when the victim and a friend went with Thysen to his workplace. The mother stated that her daughter expressed fear of further assault, prompting her to stop all contact and report the matter to the police. Thysen was arrested on August 6, 2025, and remained in custody until he was released on R2,000 bail. During the hearing, Thysen's legal representative noted his 25-year career in the police, his role as a family breadwinner, and his work as a Tai Chi instructor and wellness centre operator. Thysen stated that he had no prior convictions, would comply with bail conditions, attend court hearings, and would not interfere with witnesses or evidence. He denied the allegations and intends to plead not guilty. Thysen also resigned as CPF chairperson upon learning of the investigation. The investigating officer reported that on July 3, Thysen took the victim to his workplace under the pretext of counselling, where he allegedly asked her to undress for a massage.

'Don't accept cool drink': Mkhwanazi warns new constables against bribes

In KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), a total of 145 new police constables will be hitting the ground running. A total of 109 women and 36 men all graduated and completed their six-month Introductory Police Development Learning Programme and were all declared competent. Image: File A former activist, who fought against the apartheid government, is determined to clear his name and restore his reputation after he was labelled an apartheid collaborator and convicted of the murder of a fellow activist. Gugulethu "Matiri" Madonsela was recently granted R10,000 bail pending his appeal. He had already spent almost two years in jail. He was found guilty in November 2023 of the February 1989 murder of his fellow comrade Siphelele Nxumalo and sentenced to ten years in prison. Nxumalo was shot dead in Chesterville. Madonsela's appeal against his conviction and sentence is currently before the Supreme Court of Appeal. Speaking to The Mercury this week, just days after being granted bail, Madonsela stated that Nxumalo was his comrade, and he was close to his parents, who were also involved in the fight against apartheid. They had been together since around 1985. 'I maintain that I had nothing to do with the killing,' he said. Giving context to his life and underground ANC activities that eventually led to the current accusations against him of murder and skipping bail, he explained that life had been difficult under the burden of apartheid.
