‘Too late to slow down': Koroibete on that Adelaide tackle and unfinished Wallabies business

But Koroibete was now hurtling across, at maximum velocity.
'I predicted right – but I got there too early,' Koroibete continues. 'Instead of tackling with my right shoulder, I used my left. I was lucky I didn't get a yellow card, maybe, looking at it. But I did try to use my arms.
'I was full-tilt. And when the ball was there, it was too late to slow down. I thought, 'Yep, just have to do this'.'
Without a single tap on the brakes, Koroibete collided with Mapimpe, sending the Boks winger skyward and almost straight over the corner post like a high jumper. Commentators were confused – did Mapimpe leap? – until replays revealed the crazy that had unfolded.
'It was like he was shot out of a cannon,' former All Black Andrew Mehrtens said of Koroibete.
Koroibete: 'It didn't hurt, it was just a shock. It's a full sprint and then eyes up and the ball was there. It happened so quick. I was just lying down and thinking, 'What's just happened?' The boys pulled me up and go, 'You got him'.'
'The boys pulled me up and go, 'You got him'.'
Marika Koroibete
Koroibete also scored a try that day, and was in the middle of everything. He was man of the match as the Wallabies defeated the world champion Springboks.
'That was my first time playing here,' Koroibete said. 'And hopefully there are some more good memories to make this weekend.'
This weekend Koroibete is back in the City of Churches as one of the star attractions of the Australian and New Zealand Invitational XV, who play the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night, in the last tour match before the Test series gets underway.
In 2022, when Koroibete was at the peak of his powers and won his second John Eales medal, it would have been easy to assume the flying Fijian would go on to be part of the Wallabies' Test campaign against the Lions in 2025. He is still only 32.
But some challenging years then followed for Koroibete. The 2023 Rugby World Cup, and Test season, was a slog with no real winners, and 2024 saw Koroibete's form dip for the Wallabies. It ultimately ended in surgery for a broken wrist.
So when Joe Schmidt was putting together a squad to take on the British and Irish Lions, he rang Koroibete in Japan and explained he was going with local players.
'I understood that,' Koroibete said. 'They have a lot of players playing well and I spoke to Joe, and totally agreed with what he was saying.'
The mystery of Koroibete's fall from grace tracks back to the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, when the former Storm star says his love for rugby was majorly challenged. They'd been preparing intensively for months.
'You work so hard for something, and get nothing for it, it's tough,' he said.
But as many Australian-based players went home and took a long break, Koroibete had two weeks off and was straight back into the grind for Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan.
'I went back and thought, 'I'll play well for my club, and then get my break'. Playing for the Wallabies, and building for a World Cup, it takes a big toll out of you,' he said.
When that season finally finished, Koroibete was cooked, and, believing the Wallabies would look to rebuild their squad in 2024, he didn't expect a call-up from new coach Schmidt.
'I relaxed, and was in half-holiday mode. I didn't do any training and in my mind I was going to come back to the Wallabies. My mind switched off. I was just like, 'I will go home and then go back to Japan in September',' Koroibete said.
'But I got picked, and I went in. Yeah, I know I wasn't in my best form last year. And I ended up getting injured.'
Koroibete broke his wrist in the first ten minutes of the Wallabies' tight loss to New Zealand in Sydney but played on, and it wasn't revealed until a week later. He thought it was only a bruise but when asked to do a push-up, he couldn't. Surgery followed.
Koroibete had an injury-affected season in Japan but says he is now in good nick, and returns to Adelaide in a far better place mentally as well.
He is not done, as far as Wallabies aspirations go, and plans on showing Schmidt – and the Australian rugby public – as much against the Lions.
'This year, mentally, I am totally different,' Koroibete said. 'Even though I didn't play that much games with my wrist injury, this year I am in good shape and I want to get back to my best, and show that.
'There is a lot of high expectation for me from people, because I had been playing well for the Wallabies for the last few years.

'Meeting that expectation is my big motivation this year. I want to get back to my best.
'Not being picked in the Wallabies, I understood. But now we have just this weekend to try and show my potential. Hopefully,I will get a call from Joe later on, if he needs me.'
The AUNZ side is a unique chance to impress a whole bunch of people.
'It is a team that hasn't played together since 1989 – 36 years there – so for us, it is a massive opportunity to show the Anzac spirit,' Koroibete said.

A-League: Zinedine Machach leaves Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory's 2025-26 A-League title hopes have suffered a blow following the shock exit of French star Zinedine Machach. The 29-year-old midfielder had a season remaining on his Victory contract, but has been released on 'compassionate grounds' by A-League heavyweights. It's understood Machach has accepted a more lucrative deal from a club in Morocco. 'I will look back on my time in Melbourne with fond memories,' Machach said. 'It has been a pleasure to represent the Victory and I would like to thank the club and its fans for making me and my family feel welcomed since I joined. 'I am sad to be leaving, but this decision is the right one for my family and I appreciate the support I have received from the club in making this decision.' Zinedine Machach has been released from his of Melbourne Victory contract. Picture:Machach, who joined the Victory in August 2023 from Greek club Ionikos, scored 14 goals in 64 appearances in all competitions for the Melbourne club. He was part of two Victory grand-final losing teams, and also came up short in last year's Australia Cup decider. Victory director of football John Didulica said Machach had been a 'special player and person for us over the past two seasons'. 'He took to the A-League exceptionally well and played an important part in producing many memorable moments for Melbourne Victory," Didulica said. 'While we are terribly disappointed to lose someone that we are so close to, we know that Zinedine's most important roles in life are that of father and husband, so we support his decision entirely to move closer to family for personal reasons. 'As we say farewell to 'Zizou', we have no doubt that with the talent we currently have and the players we are looking to bring in, we can go one better this season.' Machach is the latest player to part ways with the Victory following the off-season departures of Daniel Arzani (Ferencvaros, Hungary), Ryan Teague (Mechelen, Belgium), Kasey Bos (Mainz 05, Germany), Mitch Langerak (retired), free agent Bruno Fornaroli and loan signing Alex Badolato (Newcastle Jets). AFL: Danny Daly a potential Demons target

Lions premiership-winning mentor Chris Fagan has endorsed the coaching credentials of Brisbane's football manager Danny Daly, who has been linked with the vacant Melbourne job. Daly has recently been touted as Fagan's eventual successor at Brisbane, having long been considered an AFL senior coach-in-waiting during an extensive career that has included previous roles Collingwood, North Melbourne and Richmond. However, the Lions might have a fight on their hands to hold on to Daly, with his name being touted as a potential permanent replaced for sacked Demons coach Simon Goodwin. Lions football manager Danny Daly is regarded as an AFL senior coach-in-waiting. Picture: Richard Walker 'I know we wouldn't like to lose him, that's for sure, but if it was for something like that, I'd be chairing him out of the place and saying `good luck and go well',' Fagan said on Friday. 'He's been a fantastic help to me from the day I arrived here at this football club, and we're like brothers I reckon. 'We talk a lot about football, and I know he's got that capacity inside him to (be an AFL senior coach) if that's what he wants to do. 'That's completely up to Danny, and others who make those sorts of decisions.' Daly replaced David Noble as Brisbane's head of football in November 2020 having previously been the Lions' strategy coach. Noble left Brisbane to become North Melbourne's senior coach, a position he held until July 2022 when he was sacked by the Kangaroos after 38 games at the helm. Matildas opponent revealed as preparations ramp up

The Matildas will ramp up their preparations for next year's Women's Asian Cup with a friendly against Wales during October's FIFA international window. The match against Wales has been scheduled for October 25 in Cardiff, with the Matildas to also face a yet-to-be-determined opponent later in the window. It remains to be seen whether superstar striker Sam Kerr, who hasn't played since tearing her ACL in January last year, will be made available for the games. Wales are currently ranked 32nd in the world, and although they've never qualified for the women's World Cup before, they did make it through to this year's women's Euro competition. The Matildas only have two more international windows before they kick off their Asian Cup campaign against the Philippines in Perth on March 1. New coach Joe Montemurro was missing a host of the side's biggest stars during his first set of games in charge of the Matildas earlier this year. Australia were lucky to escape with an error-riddled 3-0 win over world No.38 Slovenia in Montemurro's first game at the helm, and it was followed up by a 1-1 draw against the same opponents. Alarm bells were ringing when the Matildas slumped to a shock 1-0 loss to world No.56 Panama, and Australia were 1-0 down in the re-match before a Michelle Heyman brace and Charli Grant's 91st-minute goal rescued a 3-2 win. Montemurro says the game against Wales is a crucial step for the team in laying down the foundations for the next phase of the Matildas' journey. "We are looking to make the most of the next few FIFA Women's International windows and Wales is the perfect test for the team as we have never played them before and they are a competitive side that will test our style of play," Montemurro said. "It is important that we make the most of every opportunity together, to continually build on the relationships we are forming and setting high standards to enhance our high-performance environment."
