Who is Richard Lawson, ex-husband of Beyoncé's mum, Tina Knowles? She spoke about their relationship and divorce with Oprah and in new memoir Matriarch – but did their marriage end with jealousy?
Media mogul
Oprah Winfrey got up close and personal with Tina Knowles – mother of pop stars Beyoncé and Solange – for a recent episode of Oprah's Book Club. The podcast, through which she introduces a piece of literature to her fans and interviews its author, featured Knowles' new memoir, Matriarch.
After introducing her guest, the Emmy-winning presenter lauded the candour in Knowles' writing, calling it 'admirable' that she didn't hold back when discussing sensitive elements of her personal life, like her former relationships.

'We are fully engaged in your story, and all the people that are in your life,' Oprah remarked, before mentioning the designer's ex-husband – quickly correcting herself to add an 's', clarifying that she was referring to ex-husbands. Although
Knowles laughed it off, some fans clocked a certain shade in Winfrey's tone, while others dismissed it, given the pair's friendship.
The women then discussed the House of Deréon co-founder's relationship with her first husband, Mathew Knowles, the father of her two daughters. Although Knowles admitted that their marriage had been affected by his infidelity, she also emphasised that he was her 'best friend' and had been 'so kind' to her.
After their divorce, Knowles married Richard Lawson in 2015, but that relationship ended in 2023, per People. Knowles told Oprah their marriage was 'bringing out the worst' in her.

Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open
Gauff, Boisson win through at French Open Coco Gauff celebrates after she beats Madison Keys in the French Open quarterfinal. Photo: Reuters Coco Gauff battled back from a set down to beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an error-strewn French Open quarterfinal on Wednesday. That set up a semifinal showdown with France's 361st-ranked Lois Boisson. The second seed Gauff battled past her fellow American 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 in a tense last-eight clash littered with a whopping 14 double-faults and 101 unforced errors. "It means a lot, especially getting through this tough match today, it wasn't an easy match and I'm very happy to get through it," Gauff said. "I'm so excited to be in the semifinals back here again and have a lot more work to do. Just savour this one today and then next one tomorrow." Keys came through a tense first set in a tie-break after blowing a 4-1 lead with a double-break, but Gauff upped her level enough to fight back. The 21-year-old was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek in a one-sided showpiece match in 2022. Keys had been hoping to challenge for a second consecutive Grand Slam title, but failed to reach the semifinals in Paris for a second time. Boisson, meanwhile, continued her dream run at Roland Garros, defeating world number six Mirra Andreeva to advance to the final four. Boisson won a thrilling battle 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 against Russian Andreeva. (AFP)

Zheng ousted by Sabalenka in French Open
Zheng ousted by Sabalenka in French Open Zheng Qinwen of China falls in straight sets against Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open quarterfinals. Photo: Reuters World number one Aryna Sabalenka ended Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen's winning streak on the Paris clay with a straight-sets victory on Tuesday to seal herself a spot in the French Open semifinals. Sabalenka next faces three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland who posted a straight-sets victory over 13th seed Elina Svitolina. The top seed from Belarus won through 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 against the Chinese eighth seed in just under two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier. The 27-year-old fought back after struggling in the first set against Zheng, who had beaten her in the last eight on clay in Rome last month, extending her record against the Chinese player to 7-1. "The last tournament I was pretty exhausted," said Sabalenka. "Today I was more fresh I was ready to battle, to fight and give everything. "Honestly, I was actually glad that I lost that match because I needed a little break before Roland Garros." Zheng broke and led 4-2 in the first set. But numerous unforced errors – 31 in total – allowed the Belarusian to come back. The second set was also tight before Sabalenka broke back to lead 4-3, taking advantage of her opponent's errors. Sabalenka converted her first match point on a poorly-controlled drop-shot from Zheng to reach her seventh semifinal of the season. In another quarterfinal, Swiatek bested the former world number three Svitolina of Ukraine 6-1, 7-5 in just over 90 minutes to continue her bid to equal a 102-year record by winning four successive French Open titles. M*A*S*H actress Loretta Swit dies aged 87
M*A*S*H actress Loretta Swit dies aged 87 Swit (centre), a mainstay of one of the most successful and acclaimed series in US television history, died at her home in New York City. Photo: AFP Loretta Swit, the Emmy Award-winning actress who played no-nonsense US Army combat nurse Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan in the hit TV series "M*A*S*H" for more than a decade, died on Friday at the age of 87. Swit, a mainstay of one of the most successful and acclaimed series in US television history, died at her home in New York City from what was suspected to be natural causes, her publicist, Harlan Boll, said. Swit earned two best supporting actress Emmys and 10 nominations for her role as "Hot Lips," the lusty, tough but vulnerable, patriotic Army career nurse in the series that ran from 1972-1983. As the only regular female character in the groundbreaking show set in the fictional 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War of the 1950s, "Hot Lips" endured the insults, pranks and practical jokes of the fun-loving male surgeons. The show's cast also included Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville, Mike Farrell, Harry Morgan, Gary Burghoff, David Ogden Stiers and Jamie Farr. Swit defined her role by playing a strong, determined, independent woman, who had input into the development and storyline of her character, including her split from her married lover Major Frank Burns, hilariously played by Linville, and her own wedding and divorce. She appeared in nearly all of the more than 250 episodes and the series finale, which was the most watched episode of any TV series in history when the show ended in 1983. (Reuters)
