Emirates Development Bank launches Dh1bn Emirates Growth Fund

Times of Oman20-05-2025

Abu Dhabi: Emirates Development Bank (EDB) announced the launch of the Emirates Growth Fund (EGF), a transformative AED 1 billion growth equity platform designed to accelerate the scale, resilience, and global competitiveness of UAE-based SMEs.
Officially unveiled at the fourth edition of Make it in the Emirates Forum, EGF delivers patient capital and deep strategic partnership to high-potential businesses across priority sectors: Manufacturing, Food Security, Healthcare, and Advanced Technology.
The fund plays a pivotal role in driving the UAE's industrial transformation and advancing the goals of Operation 300bn, the national strategy to raise the industrial sector's GDP contribution to AED 300 billion by 2031.
Emirates Growth Fund targets UAE-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with strong growth potential and annual revenues typically starting from AED 10 million. The Fund's investments range between AED 10 million and AED 50 million per company. EGF redefines growth capital for UAE SMEs, targeting companies that have outgrown early-stage funding but require flexible, long-term investment to unlock their full potential.
By combining minority equity stakes with active value creation, EGF empowers founders to scale sustainably, strengthen governance, and build national champions that will shape the UAE's economic future. The Fund is chaired by Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, UAE Minister of Sports, with Najla Ahmed Al Midfa serving as Vice Chair and Managing Director. The EGF Board also includes Ms. Mariam Saeed Ghobash, Mr. Mohammed Huraimel Al Shamsi, Khalfan Juma Belhoul, Mr. Hassan AlSayegh, and Mr. Stephen Welton.
Commenting on the launch, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Emirates Development Bank, stated: "In line with the vision and directives of the UAE's leadership to enable a transformative leap in our national industrial sector, increase its contribution to GDP, and strengthen the UAE's position as a competitive and reliable destination for industrial and technological investment, Emirates Development Bank remains committed to advancing a future built on resilience and self-sufficiency."
He added "The launch of the Emirates Growth Fund is a bold, future-focused step that provides UAE-based growth-stage companies with the capital, expertise, and strategic support needed to scale and lead in the industrial sector. These are companies that are too advanced for venture capital, too entrepreneurial for traditional private equity, but too important to ignore. Our goal is to partner with scalable businesses that drive industrial capacity, create jobs, and deliver lasting economic value. Through patient capital and active support, we are strengthening the foundation of the UAE's next economic era."
Reflecting on EGF's commitment to founder-led growth and national impact, Najla Ahmed Al Midfa, Vice Chair and Managing Director, noted: "At EGF, our capital is patient, but our ambitions are not. We are here to back UAE founders who are building resilient, future-ready businesses. Through EGF, we are not just writing cheques, we are building in the next generation of UAE economic champions."
EGF targets UAE-headquartered SMEs with strong growth potential, typically generating AED 10 million or more in annual revenue, and invests between AED 10 and 50 million per company. The fund's approach centres on active minority investments, ensuring that founders retain operational control while gaining strategic support in areas such as governance, growth strategy, operational optimization, and institutionalization.
By focusing on priority sectors aligned with the UAE's strategic goals, EGF is set to deepen the nation's industrial base, enhance local supply chains, and stimulate high-skilled job creation, all critical pillars of long-term economic resilience.
Signalling immediate momentum, EGF unveiled its first investment in the healthcare sector through a partnership with Tarmeem Healthcare Holding LTD, marking the start of a portfolio aimed at delivering measurable impact and national value.

Barceló Mussanah Resort Advances Sustainability with Ecobia Bio-Digeste

Muscat – Barceló Mussanah Resort, Oman, continues to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Since assuming management of the resort in 2021, marking Barceló's debut in the Sultanate, the company has rebranded and upgraded the property to align with international hospitality standards and Oman's national sustainability initiatives. As part of its dedication to environmental responsibility, Barceló Mussanah Resort has partnered with Ecobia Middle East, an Oman-based company offering innovative and cost-effective sustainability solutions, particularly in addressing the challenge of food waste management in the hospitality sector. Several months ago, Barceló Mussanah Resort and OMRAN signed an agreement with Ecobia Middle East to install a cutting-edge bio-digester on the hotel premises. This technology efficiently addresses the issue of food waste by eliminating smelly garbage bags, reducing the attraction of flies and pests, minimizing long-haul waste transport to landfill, and significantly cutting down methane and CO₂ emissions from landfill sites. The installation of the Ecobia Bio-Digester is a dual victory for the resort. Not only has it enhanced the hotel's Corporate Social Responsibility profile, but it also produces rich, 100% organic fertilizer that is now used across the resort's expansive 230,000+ square meters of lawns and landscaped gardens. This eliminates the need to purchase chemical fertilizers, resulting in substantial cost savings. Further benefits include lower waste disposal costs, the elimination of unpleasant odors from rotting food, and the production of free organic fertilizer following the initial return on investment. General Manager David Faull estimates that the bio-digester will achieve ROI within approximately 16 months. David Faull also praised the professionalism, advice, and ongoing support provided by Ecobia Middle East. The company has delivered comprehensive sustainability training to all staff members—from chefs to housekeeping—and conducted intensive training for selected team members on operating, maintaining, and managing the bio-digester. This partnership exemplifies Barceló Mussanah Resort's unwavering commitment to sustainability and its alignment with Oman's environmental goals.

Oman opens first copper waste recycling plant

Oman has inaugurated its first industrial plant dedicated to converting legacy copper mining waste into high-purity copper using renewable energy and eco-friendly technologies — a major step toward green industrialisation and sustainable resource management in line with Oman Vision 2040 goals. Located in the Wilayat of Suhar, the plant was officially opened on Monday under the auspices of Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The launch was attended by ministers, senior officials and business leaders from across Oman's public and private sectors. Developed by Green Tech Mining and Services, the project is the first of its kind in the country. It was made possible through a strategic partnership between Oman Mining Company and Austria-based BPG Group, with support from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. Total investment exceeds RO 41 million. The initiative aims to turn environmental liabilities into economic value by reprocessing waste from historical copper mining operations. The first production phase is scheduled to begin in June 2025 with an output capacity of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. By December 2026, capacity is expected to scale to 12,000 tonnes annually — significantly enhancing Oman's footprint in the regional green mining sector. Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, described the project as a 'qualitative leap' in Oman's industrial trajectory. 'This plant integrates environmental sustainability with economic diversification and industrial localisation. It reflects our commitment to innovation-led development and cleaner industrial practices.' The project also supports the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040 by boosting value-added production, attracting high-tech investments and localising industries that harness the country's natural resources. Copper cathodes produced at the facility will be classified as sustainably recycled metal — a key asset in global decarbonisation supply chains. Khalid bin Salim al Qasabi, Director-General of Industry at the ministry, said the plant represents a practical embodiment of the ministry's push to enable advanced industrial projects. 'We worked to ensure streamlined procedures and robust technical standards to bring this facility online. It's a model of regulatory coordination and sustainable investment.' Ernst Grissemann, CEO of BPG Group, highlighted the long-term vision behind the project, which began in 2018. 'The use of renewable energy and the plant's zero-waste approach underlines our dedication to the responsible industry. This facility positions Oman as a regional hub for green transformation in the mining sector.' As Oman seeks to elevate its industrial competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and create new value chains from existing resources, this project offers a blueprint for scalable, environmentally responsible industrial growth — reinforcing the Sultanate's position in the global transition to sustainable development.

Oman's liquid H2 corridor a model for global hydrogen trade

MUSCAT, JUNE 2 A landmark agreement signed recently by Oman to establish the world's first trade corridor for liquid hydrogen (H2), marks a pivotal step in consolidating the Sultanate's position as a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. This was the central message of a recent article by Attaqa, a Washington-based Arabic-language platform dedicated to energy news and analysis. Titled "Exporting Liquefied Hydrogen Represents a Qualitative Leap for Oman and a Promising Opportunity for Middle East Countries", the article summarizes the views of several international energy experts who see the agreement as a model for global hydrogen trade. The proposed Liquid Hydrogen Corridor will connect the Port of Duqm in Oman with the Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, enabling the transport of liquid hydrogen deeper into Europe via logistics hubs in Germany and beyond. Key players in this groundbreaking initiative include Hydrom—the master planner of Oman's green hydrogen sector—and OQ, the Sultanate's integrated global energy group. Oman's leadership in this transformative venture has earned international praise. Salah Mahdi, Global Director of Hydrogen at Chart Industries, a major player in hydrogen liquefaction and transport technologies, described the project as a "qualitative leap" that reflects a forward-thinking vision combining ambition and pragmatism. By taking a pioneering role in this initiative, Oman is demonstrating its intent to go beyond exploring hydrogen potential and instead develop a large-scale, integrated value chain. The country is leveraging not only its abundant renewable energy resources and strategic geographic location but also its growing partnerships with European nations, he said. 'If this project is implemented well—and initial signs are promising—this corridor could become a global model for intercontinental hydrogen trade,' Mahdi told Attaqa. He called Oman's decision to adopt liquid hydrogen a 'strategic choice,' noting that liquefied hydrogen, like LNG, can be transported in bulk over long distances. Mahdi highlighted the project's integrated system, which includes large-scale hydrogen production, advanced liquefaction, refrigerated container shipping, and regasification facilities in Europe. Such an ecosystem, he said, could serve as a clean energy artery linking the Middle East with Europe. Chart Industries, he said, is currently collaborating with a number of developers in the MENA region to produce and liquefy hydrogen locally for eventual export to Europe. He noted in this regard that, as a pioneer in this field, Oman would set standards and establish infrastructure models for other Arab countries to emulate. Matt Moran, Managing Director of Moran Innovation LLC, a leading player in hydrogen liquefaction, emphasized Oman's early leadership in the liquefied hydrogen sector. He cited the nation's abundant solar potential, low-cost land, trained workforce, existing gas infrastructure, and access to seawater and methane as significant advantages. He also stressed the importance of learning from other hydrogen export projects, such as Australia's shipments to Japan, and highlighted Germany and the Netherlands as natural trade partners due to their strong demand, infrastructure, and LNG ties. Frank Wouters, Chair of the Hydrogen Alliance for the Middle East and North Africa, noted that while liquefied hydrogen is gaining momentum, it's one of several viable transport methods—others include ammonia or liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Interest in liquefied hydrogen led to the recent creation of the Dii Liquid Hydrogen Taskforce (DLHTF) by Dii Desert Energy, a leading international public-private network focusing on green hydrogen. Wouters, who leads the taskforce, said its mission is to clarify the benefits and challenges of this emerging energy carrier.
