'Zombie reactor': Demand from AI gives new life to Great Lakes nuclear plant
The project to bring the Palisades nuclear plant back online after being decommissioned in 2022 has the support of Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has insisted that it is necessary to meet a spike in energy demand along with the state's goals of reducing fossil fuel emissions.
A recent announcement from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) also bodes well for the decommissioned reactor, now owned by Holtec International.
The NRC gave Holtec the green light to transition Palisades from its current status as decommissioned, to eventually being classified as operationally licensed.
Yet even by nuclear energy standards, the Palisades plant was dogged by criticism in the decade before it was decommissioned.
An NRC report warned about the work culture at Palisades, where safety concerns were often ignored.
In 2016, security workers at the reactor were placed on leave from the plant, then owned by Entergy, for failing to properly follow fire prevention protocols.
But AI-driven energy demands, Michigan's push for a smaller carbon footprint and Holtec purchasing the decommissioned plant led to a push in taking the reactor back online.
Holtec has received ample funding from the state and federal government to make it all possible.
Beyond Nuclear, a Maryland based non-profit nuclear plant safety watchdog, has referred to Palisades as a 'zombie reactor', given the unprecedented request that it be put back online.
Kevin Kamps, an expert in radioactive waste at Beyond Nuclear, told The National that Holtec has never operated a nuclear reactor.
'It is not intelligent, nor wise, to restart the 60-year-old reactor at Palisades,' he said.
'It was designed in the mid-1960s, built in 1967, and it was a lemon from the get-go.' This was a reference to a lawsuit from Consumers Power, which accused the construction company that built Palisades of flawed design and construction.
Mr Kamps, who lives in West Michigan where Palisades is located, also said that recent developments with more energy-efficient AI offerings, such as DeepSeek in China, nullify the argument that nuclear energy deserves a renaissance to meet a growing energy need.
'Renewables, combined with storage and efficiency, could power AI data centres,' he said.
'Restarting Palisades is an unnecessary risk from both cost and time perspectives, but also an unnecessary risk to health, safety, security and the environment.'
He also pointed out that Arnold Gundersen, a former nuclear engineer-turned-vocal critic of the industry, has cautioned that given its age, Palisades might be susceptible to something called neutron embrittlement, making it more of a safety risk.
Beyond Nuclear has also accused Holtec of trying to push for 'plaster fixes' of various tubes within the plant by using a process called 'sleeving', instead of replacing tubes and other equipment.
Nick Culp, a senior manager for government affairs and communications with Holtec Palisades, dismissed Beyond Nuclear's concerns.
'The plant remains on track and on budget for a safe restart, supported by extensive inspections, testing, preventive maintenance, repairs, and upgrades,' he told The National, also pointing to Palisades's operational evaluation just before it shutting down in 2022.
'Palisades operated in the NRC's highest safety category and completed multiple record-setting production runs, which is a testament to the plant's strong material condition and the professionalism of the team.'
As to the allegations of sleeving for repairs, Mr Culp said that Holtec was using an 'industry-proven repair method' in line with its preventive maintenance strategy.
'Each sleeved tube is subject to thorough testing and inspection before return to service,' he said.
Despite the controversy surrounding Palisades, Mr Culp said that Palisades is still on track for what he described as a 'safe restart'.
If all goes according to plan and if the NRC continues to grant approval amid regulatory requirements, Palisades could be restarted by the end of this year.
Holtec indicated that means less of a burden on the energy grid, along with thousands of jobs contributing to the West Michigan economy.
It would be premature, however, for Holtec to take a victory lap on Palisades.
Beyond Nuclear has filed a challenge to Holtec through the NRC, which Mr Kamps said revolves around the company's 'request to repair, not replace, the degraded steam generators' inside Palisades.
He also said Beyond Nuclear also wants to litigate the matter in federal court.
'This could happen sooner rather than later,' he told The National.
Meanwhile, the spike in electricity consumption due to the proliferation of AI has led energy providers to warn of a looming energy crunch.
nuclear reactors, could prove to be pivotal for many parts of the US.

Passwords under threat as tech giants seek tougher security
Fingerprints, access keys and facial recognition are putting a new squeeze on passwords as the traditional computer security method -- but also running into public hesitancy. "The password era is ending," two senior figures at Microsoft wrote in a July blog post. The tech giant has been building "more secure" alternatives to log in for years -- and has since May been offering them by default to new users. Many other online services -- such as artificial intelligence giant OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot -- require steps like entering a numerical code emailed to a user's known address before granting access to potentially sensitive data. "Passwords are often weak and people re-use them" across different online services, said Benoit Grunemwald, a cybersecurity expert with Eset. Sophisticated attackers can crack a word of eight characters or fewer within minutes or even seconds, he pointed out. And passwords are often the prize booty in data leaks from online platforms, in cases where "they are improperly stored by the people supposed to protect them and keep them safe," Grunemwald said. One massive database of around 16 billion login credentials amassed from hacked files was discovered in June by researchers from media outlet Cybernews. The pressure on passwords has tech giants rushing to find safter alternatives. Tricky switchover One group, the Fast Identity Online Alliance (FIDO) brings together heavyweights including Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and TikTok. The companies have been working on creating and popularising password-free login methods, especially promoting the use of so-called access keys. These use a separate device like a smartphone to authorise logins, relying on a pin code or biometric input such as a fingerprint reader or face recognition instead of a password. Troy Hunt, whose website Have I Been Pwned allows people to check whether their login details have been leaked online, says the new systems have big advantages. "With passkeys, you cannot accidentally give your passkey to a phishing site" -- a page that mimics the appearance of a provider such as an employer or bank to dupe people into entering their login details -- he said. But the Australian cybersecurity expert recalled that the last rites have been read for passwords many times before. "Ten years ago we had the same question... the reality is that we have more passwords now than we ever did before," Hunt said. Although many large platforms are stepping up login security, large numbers of sites still use simple usernames and passwords as credentials. The transition to an unfamiliar system can also be confusing for users. Passkeys have to be set up on a device before they can be used to log in. Restoring them if a PIN code is forgotten or trusted smartphone lost or stolen is also more complicated than a familiar password reset procedure. "The thing that passwords have going for them, and the reason that we still have them, is that everybody knows how to use them," Hunt said. Ultimately the human factor will remain at the heart of computer security, Eset's Grunemwald said. "People will have to take good care of security on their smartphone and devices, because they'll be the things most targeted" in future, he warned.

Iraq can end its dependence on Iranian gas
Iraq does not need to look further than its borders to replace Iranian gas supplies needed to fuel its power facilities as it has sufficient gas under its ground. OPEC's second largest oil producer is already pumping enough gas from its oilfields, but nearly 40 percent of it is being burned given the costly process of separating it from oil. In 2024, Iraq produced nearly 3.1 billion cubic feet of gas, of which almost 1.3 billion was flared and the rest was sent to power facilities and gas-based industrial projects, according to the Energy Ministry. Energy analysts believe that gas production could be sharply increased to meet domestic demand but this requires Iraq to largely increase its oil production. 'Iraq could be self-sufficient in gas if it increases oil production by around one million barrels per day and manages to slash the gas flaring rate,' said Nabil Al-Marsoumi, an energy and economics professor at Basra University in South Iraq. But Marsoumi noted that while it is possible to reduce flaring, Iraq faces curbs on any crude output increase by OPEC and its partners. Iraq currently has a sustainable oil output capacity of just below five million bpd and it aims to boost it to over six million barrels per day (bpd) although its OPEC Plus quota is now 4.2 million bpd. 'Iraq aims to expand sustainable oil capacity in the next few years in the hope its quota will be higher…this of course will allow it to increase associated gas production,' said Abbas Al-Shatri, an energy expert and member of Iraq's economists network. Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani said this year progress has been made in reducing gas flaring and that the rate could be cut to zero within three years thanks to projects undertaken by France's TotalEnergies, British Petroleum and Chinese firms. To offset a sharp fall in Iranian gas supplies over the past months, Iraq has looked as far as Turkmenistan but the deal is facing hurdles. They include the difficulty to find a company to guarantee the continued flow of gas to Iraq and the fact that supplies have to pass through Iran, which is under US sanctions. Iraq is also considering importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar and Oman but this requires the purchase and installation of floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) to store LNG and convert it back into a gaseous state. 'This is a thorny issue right now because the infrastructure at Khor Zubair port in South Iraq is not ready yet to receive LNG vessels,' Marsoumi said. 'Iraq has also not constructed a pipeline network to carry gas from the sea to power facilities…installation of FSRUs also requires long technical and contractual time.' Lower Iranian gas supplies and other factors have created a large power supply gap in Iraq although it imports electricity from nearby Turkey, Jordan through interconnections and from the GCC Grid through Kuwait. The planning ministry last year estimated Iraq's power generation capacity at 23-25 gigawatts (GW) but actual needs exceed 35 GW and could climb to 50 GW during summer.
