NHL
free agency kicked off with a surprising twist, teams are racing for goaltenders amid a sudden shortage. With top NHL goalies off the market and limited free agents available, desperate franchises are now eyeing even retired legends like Marc-André Fleury.
The unexpected goalie crisis has quickly become the biggest storyline of this year's NHL offseason.
Goaltender shortage sparks NHL panic as teams reach out to retired Marc-André
Fleury
Goaltenders have become one of the hottest commodities in the 2025 NHL offseason. With the Florida Panthers lifting their second straight Stanley Cup, teams quickly turned to free agency to stay competitive. However, the limited number of experienced goaltenders available has sparked desperation across the league.
According to the Associated Press' Stephen Whyno, fewer than a dozen goalies from the 2024-25 season were available in free agency. That's alarmingly low for a league with 32 teams all needing depth between the pipes. The shortage became even more evident when Marc-André Fleury's agent, Allan Walsh, revealed that five teams reached out on July 1 asking if the retired goaltender would consider returning.
Fleury, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and Vezina Trophy winner, retired after the 2024-25 season with the Minnesota Wild.

Despite a first-round playoff exit against the Vegas Golden Knights, his career ended with immense respect. Yet, the fact that teams were willing to offer him one-year deals days after retirement highlights just how desperate the market has become.
While Fleury has no intention of returning, his brief stint with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship likely added to speculation. Teams saw an opening and took their shot—but were ultimately turned down.
In the meantime, goalie movement across the NHL has been rapid. John Gibson was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, while Dan Vladar signed with the Flyers and David Rittich joined the Islanders. The Devils extended Jake Allen on a five-year, $9 million contract, and the Canucks kept Thatcher Demko.

The Edmonton Oilers, despite back-to-back Eastern Conference Final appearances, remain a cautionary tale. Stuart Skinner's playoff inconsistency, especially his six-goal Game 1 collapse against the Kings exposed their goaltending vulnerability.

Jonnu Smith blasts Miami Dolphins after trade, accuses team of disrespecting his value
Jonnu Smith expressed disappointment after the Dolphins traded him to the Steelers (Image via AP) Jonnu Smith isn't hiding how he feels after being traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite his professionalism, the veteran tight end made it clear that the move stung—especially after the Dolphins refused to offer him a new contract following his breakout 2024 season. Jonnu Smith reveals emotional side of trade, says Dolphins didn't value him like a Pro Bowler In a candid conversation on teammate Terron Armstead's podcast, Smith opened up about his reaction to the trade and the failed contract talks that preceded it. 'Going through that process, I was hurt,' he said. 'I didn't think that collectively—as an organization, players, coaches—I didn't think that [they believed] trading Jonnu Smith, that's where our success starts.' The Dolphins, according to Smith, told him they couldn't 'economically' justify paying him at a Pro Bowl level, despite his stellar season in 2024 where he caught 88 passes for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns. 'That one stung,' Smith admitted. Pittsburgh welcomes Jonnu Smith with respect—and a payday Once it became clear that Miami wouldn't budge on compensation, Smith began looking elsewhere. 'I had to make the decision to say, man, well I've got to go where I am appreciated and viewed on paper, economically, contract-wise as a top guy in this league—which I know I am,' he explained. 'And Pittsburgh was the team that saw me as that.' The Steelers wasted no time showing their faith, giving Smith a one-year, $12 million extension as part of the deal that also saw cornerback Jalen Ramsey head to Pittsburgh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 月 **,***원대 '실비보험' 최적가 비교가입! NHL Trade Rumors: Anaheim Ducks eye blockbuster move for Dallas Stars' Jason Robertson
The Dallas Stars face a crucial decision regarding Jason Robertson's future (Image via AP) As the Dallas Stars try to shake off yet another Western Conference Final loss, rumors around one of their biggest stars, Jason Robertson, are beginning to heat up. While the front office hasn't made any official declarations, NHL insider Jeff Marek believes a decision on Robertson's future is coming sooner than expected — and it could involve a major shakeup. Jason Robertson's contract drama heating up early in the offseason Jasson Robertson, who still has one year left on his current contract before hitting restricted free agency, is reportedly looking for a deal that reflects his status as a top-tier forward. However, negotiations with Dallas haven't gone as smoothly as hoped. Marek said, 'I don't think Dallas Stars are going to let the Jason Robertson question linger deep into the summer; they're going to find out pretty quick what number he's looking at. ' The Dallas front office is expected to take a hard look at whether they can afford to keep the 25-year-old winger long-term. If not, they may be forced to entertain trade offers — and the Anaheim Ducks are already circling. Ducks could be the surprise suitor for the Stars' elite winger According to Marek, Anaheim is emerging as a strong candidate to land Robertson should a trade materialize. With their young core steadily improving and plenty of salary cap flexibility, the Ducks could offer the perfect package of promising prospects and financial freedom to match Robertson's contract demands. For Anaheim, adding Robertson would be a franchise-changing move. The winger tallied 35 goals and 45 assists last season, cementing his reputation as one of the league's most complete offensive weapons. With a blend of elite skating, high hockey IQ, and finishing ability, Robertson could be the missing piece that elevates Anaheim back into playoff contention. The Stars want clarity, and if the two sides can't come to terms quickly, a blockbuster deal could be on the table. Anaheim remains in pole position, but other teams are likely monitoring the situation closely. Stars fans may want to brace themselves — the offseason could get bumpy. Golden State Warriors eye new addition, but Jarrett Allen trade looms after Kevon Looney's departure
Jarrett Allen is in Cleveland Cavaliers (Image via Instagram / @_bigjayy_) The Golden State Warriors are expected to make their first major move of the offseason. The move came after the departure of veteran center Kevon Looney, who signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. With their frontcourt depth now a pressing concern, the Warriors are actively exploring options. The two big names they have shortlisted are Al Horford and Jarrett Allen. Golden State Warriors eye Al Horford and Jarrett Allen as frontcourt fixes after Kevon Looney's departure After losing Kevon Looney to the New Orleans Pelicans, the Golden State Warriors may make their first big offseason trade. Jake Fischer of the Stein Line believes that by the end of the weekend, the organisation will have a solid chance of landing their top FA target. As per their official Facebook page, he wrote on Thursday: 'All signs, for the record, continue to point to Al Horford landing with Golden State … eventually.. Sunday will be the first day of the 2025-26 salary cap year that NBA teams can make most free agent signings and trades official.' Jarrett Allen might join Golden State Warriors (Image via Instagram / @_bigjayy_) On the other hand, Brandon Austin of PFSN claims that the team might take a bold stance this offseason. This is probably because Jarrett Allen showed up as a prime candidate for Steve Kerr's scheme. As per the Sporting News, stating his opinion, he also claimed on the same day: 'Adding (Jarrett) Allen could be a game-changing move for the Golden State Warriors, as it addresses their frontcourt issues while supporting their championship aspirations.' He further listed Jarrett Allen 's ability to score and provide interior protection as the main reasons he would succeed in San Francisco. The 6'9" centre gives the Golden State Warriors the presence they need to contend with the best teams in the NBA. He further added: 'Golden State often relied on the undersized Draymond Green to battle against bigger centers. As good a defender as Green is, he's into his mid-30s now, and banging with bigs all season long can take a toll on the body.. Allen's ability to anchor the paint would allow Green to shift back to power forward, maximizing his defensive versatility and playmaking.' In Year 8, J.A. excelled as a powerful rebounder, superb pick-and-roll finisher, reliable rim-runner, and adequate rim protector. The Texas product shot a career-high 70.6% from the field and averaged 13.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game. Brandon Austin's trade idea might gain traction quickly because the Golden State Warriors need a centre. They are also rumoured to be considering a sign-and-trade with Kuminga this summer.
