Int'l moot discusses counterterrorism measures

Express Tribune02-07-2025
Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI) on Tuesday hosted an International Conference titled, 'Pakistan: A Bulwark against Terrorism'.
It was addressed by former foreign minister and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who offered an olive branch to India, calling upon it to exhibit sagacity and talk it out with Pakistan.
He said that Pakistan has come a long way, and has defeated terrorism at home, apart from being a genuine and instrumental partner in fighting the war on terrorism in the region. He said that with more than 90,000 civil and military casualties in the last two decades, and a collateral economic damage of more than $100 billion, it's time for the world to recognise Pakistan's sacrifices, and not to shun its utility.
The conference was opened by President IPRI Lt General (retd) Majid Ehsan who outlined the need and necessity of flagging Pakistan's meticulous role in fighting terrorism, and outlined the way to go by working on a host of realms that come to integrate policymakers and those fighting this faceless war for a comprehensive success.

President Zardari, PM Shehbaz call for collective response to climate change

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have called for collective response to climate change through advancement of Green Pakistan Programme. In their separate messages on launching of nationwide Monsoon Tree Plantation Drive on Monday, they said more than 41 million saplings will be planted across the country during this campaign — between August and October. The president said at this critical time, when climate change has already brought destruction to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country through floods and cloudbursts, we must act decisively to plant more and more trees, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) media wing reported. Pakistan secures over $1.5 billion for climate action amid rising environmental pressures 'Trees are the lifeline of our environment and one of the strongest defenses against climate change. They clean the air we breathe, enrich the soil that feeds us, regulate our climate, conserve our precious water resources, and provide shelter to countless species of life. Trees lower extreme temperatures, absorb rainwater, and reduce floods and landslides. Every tree planted is a shield against disaster and a source of life for generations,' he said. He said the Green Pakistan Programme is a national initiative to expand forest cover, rehabilitate degraded lands, restore the balance of nature, and promote nature-based solutions. President Zardari said the well-being and progress of any nation are grounded in the preservation of its forests and natural environment. 'In this plantation campaign, I urge all citizens to take part in this noble cause and plant saplings to build a greener, cleaner, and more prosperous Pakistan for generations to come,' he said. PM Shehbaz, in his message, said the government is committed to tree plantation campaign by utilising all available means and natural solutions in order to increase the proportion of forests and soil fertility under its Green Pakistan Programme. What is cloudburst? Causes, science, role of climate change 'Increasing the rate of tree plantation is essential to protect against the harmful effects of climate change. Pakistan is among the countries most severely affected by climate change. The recent monsoon season's unusual rainfall and resulting flash floods, along with the loss of life and property, have once again proven that taking precautionary measures against climate change is inevitable for Pakistan. 'The forest cover in Pakistan is only five percent, which is insufficient for the environmental protection of any country,' he said. He urged the people to develop a sense of responsibility to fulfill this important national, environmental and climate duty. The prime minister said the tree plantation, with its positive impact on human life, plays a key role in the conservation and growth of country's invaluable natural resources, flora and fauna. 'Let us unite and participate in this national tree plantation campaign in an organised manner so that a green, healthy, clean, and prosperous Pakistan becomes the destiny of ours and future generations,' he maintained.

India-Pakistan conflict: Naqvi heaps praise on armed forces, intelligence agencies

LAHORE: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi has lauded the remarkable role of Pakistan's armed forces, intelligence agencies, and national leadership in the country's victory during the May war against India. Speaking at a seminar titled 'Global Impacts of Pakistan's Military and Diplomatic Victories over India', organised by the Waris Mir Foundation at Aiwan-e-Iqbal on Sunday, the minister said that every move, decision, and plan of the enemy was intercepted in advance during the conflict. Interior minister said that the current political and administrative setup in Pakistan should continue for the country's stability and progress. Pak-India conflict: Indian opposition assails Modi for failures Naqvi said it was a major challenge for the government to provide evidence to the world, including wreckage of Indian jet fighters shot down by Pakistani forces. He noted with pride that within minutes of the operation, not only images but also videos of the destroyed aircraft were available, strengthening Pakistan's stance globally. Paying tribute to the 'hidden soldiers', who worked in secrecy, the interior minister said the nation also witnessed divine help during the war. He cited the example of seven missiles fired by Indian forces towards a Pakistani military base, none of which hit the target. Similarly, despite repeated attempts, Indian strikes failed to damage Pakistan's bases, except for one where Pakistani soldiers embraced martyrdom. 'Faith, belief, and determination are weapons that invite the help of Allah,' he remarked, adding that Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal General Asim Munir responded to Indian aggression with courage and conviction. He informed the audience that Pakistan's forces successfully struck multiple targets inside India and achieved all their objectives. Recalling a meeting with a Saudi delegation during the war, Naqvi said the Field Marshal had drawn a comparison, describing India as a 'shining car' and Pakistan as a 'loaded dumper', making it clear what happens when the two collide. He highlighted the unity and coordination of Pakistan's civil and military leadership, in contrast to India's conflicting narratives during the conflict. He accused Indian leaders Ajit Doval and Amit Shah of being the real architects behind the 'drama' staged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, warning that they would eventually bring India to ruin. The minister appreciated the unity demonstrated by all national political parties during the war and pointed out that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's voice was heard globally, while the Indian delegation faced difficulties abroad. He further accused India of openly supporting terrorism in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stressing that Pakistan possesses concrete evidence of Indian involvement. Naqvi warned that Pakistan would continue to pursue India until the Kashmiris are granted their right to self-determination as pledged in UN resolutions once signed by India's former prime minister. He said despite immense international pressure after Indian jets were downed, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir stood firm and gave a strong response to India. 'Pak has evidence of downing Indian planes'

Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi has reiterated that Pakistan downed six Indian fighter jets during the four-day conflict between the two nuclear armed neighbours in May this year and that the country had documentary evidence in the shape of videos to substantiate its claim. "We downed six Indian aircraft, with video evidence available," Naqvi said on Sunday while addressing a seminar in Punjab's provincial capital. India launched a series of attacks inside Pakistan on May 7 in what it claimed was a response to the militant attack on tourists in the Pahalgam area of held Kashmir on April 22. Pakistan retaliated to the attacks on May 10, prompting a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump on the same day. According to Naqvi, the war effort against Pakistan was not led by Prime Minister Modi but by Amit Shah and Ajit Doval, who respectively serve as home minister and national security adviser in Modi's cabinet. The interior minister claimed that the Indian navy, army, and air force had no unified plan. He stated that Pakistan's intelligence institutions had access to India's every move. "If one is determined with strong faith, then Almighty not only helps but also makes victory destiny," he said. The minister also claimed that Pakistan received divine help during the conflict. "India fired seven missiles at Nur Khan Airbase, but none caused damage—they landed either outside the base or elsewhere. In retaliation, Pakistan targeted 36 Indian positions." The interior minister added that during the war Pakistan's political parties stood united, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari playing an important role in diplomacy. He alleged that India is openly sponsoring terrorism in Balochistan. Naqvi stressed that Pakistan will continue to pursue the Kashmir cause until Kashmiris are granted their right to self-determination. "The credit for Pakistan's firm response goes to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who endured the pressure and gave India a fitting reply," he added. Last week, Indian Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh claimed that the Indian Air Force (IAF) had also shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and one large aircraft during Operation Sindoor in early May. Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had immediately dismissed IAF chief's claims, calling them "as implausible as they are ill-timed". In a statement posted on microblogging site "X", Asif said it was "ironic" that senior Indian military officers were being made to front "a monumental failure caused by the strategic shortsightedness of Indian politicians". He said for three months after the operation, no such assertions were made, whereas Pakistan had immediately provided "detailed technical briefings" to the international media.
